Harley Quinn #1 - Hot in the City

4

Harley is out on her own and the world better watch out.

The Good

It's safe to say this is not going to be your average series. With Harley Quinn as the main character, you're never going to be sure what will happen next. We don't usually see villains as the lead character in comics. Harley is a psychopath. She will kill without a second thought. That could be the tricky part for some readers.

Despite her choice in how to solve certain problems, you can't help but be drawn to Harley. She's always been a fascinating characters with different layers to her personality. Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti have also done a great job in making her a little more human. You can't help but find Harley a little adorable even though she could brutally kill whoever she's sharing the panel with.

Harley has been bequeath a building which gives her a new home. Along with her new residence, she's also gaining a potential new supporting cast. This is something that will add more to a comic focusing on a crazed character. Harley having others to interact with allows for us to see some of the different sides to who she is.

Chad Hardin's art is great. He has a great style that makes the story flow smoothly and adds a nice amount of detail to the backgrounds to make this feel like a different corner of the DCU. And what about Alex Sinclair's colors? I'm practically mesmerized with each panel. I love the way the colors flow together and it's great seeing such lush backgrounds rather than plain and simple ones we often see in comics.

The Bad

There was concern over Harley breaking the Fourth Wall (she does not do it!). My concern is over the other "voice" she hears. It's not a big deal and does further illustrate Harley's fragile grasp on reality. We'll have to see how much of a role it plays in future issues.

Harley with a supporting cast could be interesting but could also be tricky to pull off.

The bigger concern is we have a series focusing on a killer. Is Harley a nice person? Well, she's shown to only harm those who (big quotes) might "deserve" it. This might be something some readers may have issues with. Hopefully those readers can see how fun and not serious this is meant to be.

The Verdict

Harley can be a fun character. We've seen her portrayed in different ways and thank goodness Amanda and Jimmy have a great grasp on her. This isn't Harley going on missions for the Suicide Squad or Harley pining over the Joker. This is Harley in her own little corner of the DCU. She now has her own place with (gasp) some responsibilities. Throw in the roller derby angle along with Chad Hardin's art and Alex Sinclair's colors, this is a great comic to make you feel warm inside for the holidays. (Even if this has nothing to do with the holiday season). Why not buy two issues - one for you and one for a friend. It's a good time for everyone.

"Harley is a psychopath. She will kill without a second thought."

I don't find this to be an accurate description. Harley isn't historically a sociopathic monster who goes about her day killing anybody who crosses her path. She's 100% misguided and might not care about hurting people who get in her way. But this flawed characteristic of her as a complete sociopath, Joker-clone is becoming increasingly prevalent in comics lately for some reason.

I've yet to buy the issue. But the fact that the reviewer begins his review with this description of Harley already worries me that Conner and Palmiotti are going to continue presenting the character in the wrong light.

@citizenbane: I know right, people seemed to think Harley Quinn is a good guy but she is far from it. She in love with and works with the joker for crying out loud. She helps set up his plan which she knows will hurt or kill millions of people. People tend to lose site of that because of the way the writers write some of these characters, which I give them credit for because that what psycho paths suppose to do. They suppose to make you believe that they are nice, sweet, and funny when they are really just a ticking time bomb ready to explode. Thank dexter, norman bates, or kathy bates from misery they all seem nice but innocent but we know they are insane people.

Indeed.

I loved the zero issue, but found this one to be far more in keeping with the problematic, violent + crazy version I've come to despise. Didn't help having just read the Injustice annual last night, where Harley's being written nigh perfectly.

I found this issue to be average at best and a bit underwhelming. Having said that, I never judge a new book by the first issue alone. I'll pick up the next issue and see how it goes.

I'm still undecided on this title. Loved the art but not quite yet sold on the story. I will defo buy issue two though. Hopefully the inclusion of another female villain in the next issue will help frame Harley's personality a bit better.

I hope she keeps the jacket on, she looks better with it than without it.

And is it me or are they reusing the "Hit on Harley" plot from her other solo series? I mean, they did that like three times!

@asjmooney: I agree this book felt pretty average and I feel undecided as well. By the way, that isn't a hamster. It's a beaver.

I really enjoyed this issue. It feels like people were expecting one thing and were disappointed to see that their preconceived notions were not found in the book.

To me this issue had a touch of Deadpool (comedy), a pinch of Loony Toons (cartoon violence) and a cup of Hawkeye (off duty supehero who owns an apartment building).

This was a well written, well drawn, concise comic. It definitely was not knocked out of the park but first issues rarely are because they have to spend so much time setting the new status quo up. This is a definite 4/5 for me.

I loved this initial issue. My only real complaint is that Harley wasn't as maniacal or crazy as she normally would be, but I guess we can blame that on the Joker.
