Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1 - Sinestro's Law Part 1: The Last Lantern

4

Sinestro and his Corps are ruling the universe through fear!

Hal Jordan is the lone Green Lantern throughout the universe, a universe which Sinestro and his Corps rule. Can the Green Lanterns become the police force throughout the universe or will it be run through fear?

It's weird to think that throughout Robert Venditti's time writing Green Lantern that he's never done a story centered around Sinestro. This issue truly defines who Sinestro is now and what his motives are. He wants to rule the universe using fear, which has always been his goal, but Venditti puts a nice stamp on it in this issue.

What's really working with this issue is that it feels like a Green Lantern book. That may sound silly, at first, but Green Lantern books need to have this feeling of science-fiction, order, with an element or fantasy and lore to really work. At it's core, it's not a super-hero book. It's a space adventure about policing the universe. That's what this issue is all about. Also, there's some developments with Parallax. We won't spoil that here though.

If you've been keeping up with what's been going on with the Green Lantern Corps, then you know they've been in another universe for the past year, while Hal Jordan was a renegade. Minor spoilers: the hook at the end of the issue is that the Green Lantern Corps is back. This raises more questions than anything else. What's going to happen when they run into Hal Jordan again?

The art team of Rafa Sandoval (pencils), Jordi Tarragona (inks), and Tomeu Morey (colors) is exceptionally solid on the issue. The work is consistent and drags the reader into this world. Any Green Lantern book needs a strong colorist, and Morey is the person for the job. His work on the contructs, in particular, is really brilliant. The contrast between the gradual shading and flat colors there really fit the book, while making it all pop out. These are some great looking colors.

While this issue works great for both old and new readers alike, I find myself utterly confused to why Sinestro is old now. The character mentions that his body has taken a great toll, but there doesn't seem to be an actual reason to why he's like this. Surely, this was explained somewhere else,

Overall, the first official issue of this series is a solid start. The Lantern books haven't been on the same page for quite some time, so it's nice to see Venditti and company bring everything back together. There is easily enough of a hook here to keep readers coming back, and it's leading to some interesting places. Plus, the Green Lantern Corps is finally back. Everything feels right again.

The way Venditti is writing Sinestro is really killing my enjoyment of this comic. He's pretty much ignoring most of the development from Sinestro's solo and has seemingly turned him back to a one dimensional villain. The sad part is that I'd be enjoying this if it were any other villain but this is just regression for Sinestro

Its a solid issue. I just didn't enjoy it for the reason above. =/

@theexile285: But you have to admit, that page with Sinestro surrounded by his corps was amazing.

I get what you mean as well, through out the whole Sinestro speech, I felt just wrong on the inside.

Kind of negates the whole point of putting Soranik in charge.

I think sinestro is old because of a fight that occurred in his recent cullin bunn run with a dead guardian . I may be wrong though , as I didn't read it. Solid issue , can't wait to see the good ol group dynamics between Hal , John , Guy, and Kyle. That's my biggest anticipation

He was weakened by the fight but he didn't suddenly age because of it. There's no reason why he should look that old.

That and I hate that writers continue to take War World away from Mongul and give it to other villains.

IIRC he gave up his old ring and it disappeared along with the other Green Lanterns.

Sinestro's been the only other villain to use it.

I for one was happy that Venditti is continuing to write Hal. Loved the Renegade arc, and I think its right there with Johns work. Excited to see how he plays this out. Also, so glad Billy Tan is off this lol

That's a good point. I never actually thought about how important the colourist is on an a Green Lantern book. I wonder if there's a technical name for the green colour they use on Green Lantern???

I'm really glad DC kept Robert Venditti on Hal's book. He is a great writer, the book is terrific so far, the art is outstanding, I simply love this. Great stuff.

I hear you.

Sinestro was an utter badass in his run. Not only working to save his people, re-establish his relation with his daughter, but making the yellow lanterns actually wanting to protect the universe.

Taming Parallax, assaulting the New Gods, and restoring his homeworld was great. A strict and firm, but passionate leader.

This.

They undid all of Cullen Bunns work, Sinestro starred out wanting to save his people then the universes from itself because of the GL corps absence now he's just a despot? Not feeling this at all.
