Green Lantern #47 - The Comforts of Home

4

Hal heads home to see his family.

Hal Jordan has spent a ton of time away from Earth off in the cosmos dealing with Black Hand, but that's for good reason, since he's a wanted man by the Green Lantern Corps. However, the GLC has disappeared and now that Black Hand is gone, Hal goes to check in on his brother on Earth.

Hal finally gets a breather. It's nice to see that Hal actually gets some downtime, as he was seemingly involved in major event after major event, with no down time. Things kinda slow down here at Hal and his brother, Jim, reunite. The downside to all of this is that Hal cuts it hair. I was digging the renegade look, but oh well.

While Hal hangs out with his brother and his family, there's a bomb that goes off on the boardwalk. It was sent by someone from Modora. While we don't get to see Sonar pop back into the picture, even though he was revealed as the threat in the last issue, writer Robert Venditti does a fine job of setting up these new bad guys. They're essentially terrorists and Hal never actually fights any of them. He spends his time saving others. And with what happens towards the end of the issue, we are going to see one vengeful Hal Jordan.

This leads us to the bookends of the book, drawn by Billy Tan and Mark Irwin. We're not spoiling anything here, but it's the return of an iconic villain to the DC Universe. I haven't been this excited about a villain returning in a long time, and I'm hoping this story stays on the backburner for a little longer while the Sonar story develops more on Earth.

Martin Coccolo does the artwork on the rest of the issue. He has a really interesting style and his inking has a very pulp comics feel to it. Coccolo is known for his colorwork, but Tony Avina is credited as the colorist here. The characters look good, except for a couple of times where characters faces are distorted. The biggest problem came early on in an interior shot where the characters didn't seem to fit into the rooms they were standing in. Other times, it feels so empty. It's pretty distracting to the scene, but on the flip side, the outdoor sequences look fantastic and are filled with a ton of detail.

Overall, this was a solid start to this new story that has a HUGE secret revealed at the end of the issue. We finally get to see Hal Jordan have some down time and a new terrorist threat rise in the area. GREEN LANTERN continues to be a solid book, month-to-month, and more than anything else, I'm excited to see what this creative team has for us next.
