Green Lantern #3 - Sinestro, Part Three

5

Hal Jordan and Sinestro hate each other. Too bad they have to work together to take on the Sinestro Corps. And wait until you see the absolutely insane ending.

Hal Jordan and Sinestro hate each other more than anything. Forced to work together, how long can this alliance last?

The Good

So far, GREEN LANTERN hasn't skipped a beat. Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke have been chugging along with the adventures of Hal Jordan since before the 'New 52.' Hal and Sinestro can't stand each other but are essentially being forced to work together. Sinestro has been giving a green power ring despite not wanting it and Hal Jordan was stripped of his. Sinestro, showing more and more signs of being an extremely powerful Green Lantern has made a ring for Hal and has some limited control over it. He needs Hal to help him overthrow the Sinestro Corps that has his homeworld under their control and Hal needs the ring in order to be a Green Lantern.

The way the interaction between the two is written is what makes this story work. There might be some tiny level of respect deep down between the two but they will never admit it. The fact that they need each other makes their hatred even worse. Mahnke's art is top notch as usual. He captures the look of hate, disgust and surprise so easily with all the characters. Whether the action is on Earth, in space, in the Guardians' chamber or on Korugar, it all looks so good.

The real surprise is Sinestro. Was he really the universe's best Green Lantern? He keeps pulling tricks out of his sleeve that will surprise readers as well as Hal Jordan. You can only imagine what would have happened with the Corps or the Guardians if he managed to remain a Lantern before. We don't know why exactly he was chosen now but it's all playing out extremely well. What seemed almost like a gimmick, giving Sinestro a ring, is proving to be much much more than that.

There's also a pretty crazy ending that should pump you up and make you wonder what's going to happen next issue.

The Bad

We're getting a great story but some things almost feel too easy. It's hard not to be suspicious over what is going on. Does Sinestro really know more about the Green Lanterns than pretty much everyone else? Does he really think he and Hal can defeat the entire Sinestro Corps? Either way, we're getting an interesting story that's playing out better than some of the other Lantern titles.

The Verdict

Hal and Sinestro are the perfect teammates that can't stand each other. It was interesting when Hal and Guy had to work together but Hal and Sinestro take the hatred to a whole new level. Sinestro is proving that he just might be the greatest Green Lantern there ever was. He's doing things that we and Hal haven't seen or knew was possible. You'll be kept in suspense as you can feel everything is about to explode at any time. Hal and Sinestro make great partners but there's no way it can last. Also the idea of the two of them being able to take on the entire Sinestro Corps is pretty crazy. Geoff Johns makes it all work without a hitch and Doug Mahnke has easily become my current favorite Green Lantern artist. There's plenty of insane action, story build up and an ending you won't see coming.
