Foster #2

4

There are hidden monsters and they are now revealing themselves. What will our luckless hero do when he's forced to protect a child from two different types of 'monsters'?

What happens when hidden monsters start appearing? Eddie Foster is not a man willing to take responsibilities but he may not have a choice.

The Good

Eddie Foster is a recovering alcoholic. Because of a former relationship with his neighbor, when her son is left home alone, Eddie feels the need to watch over him. His discovery last issue and the appearance of a monster is pushing Eddie into a life he didn't want.

Now that we've seen the existence of monsters in Vintage City, we get a little look at how they operate. It's put best when they they are talking amongst themselves, "We're the boogey man. Humans fear us. They won't even admit to themselves that we exist." But what does all this have to do with the kid Foster is now looking after? We left off on an interesting note last issue and there were some clues as to his origin. Now we're getting more of the big picture.

This is where the story could have gone in two directions. With having the Dwellers slowly exposing themselves, it helps to move the story along rather than keep it crawling along. Eddie needs to protect the boy from the Dwellers and it turns out from others. It's possible there is more than one type of monster in Vintage City. Because of who he is, he's going to have a hard time doing what he needs to.

The Bad

The existence of the Dwellers is unknown but Eddie happens to come across another person with a lot of information on them. It felt a little convenient. But it does help to move the story along. With more and more 'monsters' showing up and the revelation that others know about them, the story is almost moving too fast. The cliffhanger we're left with will be tricky for the next issue.

The Verdict

Things are changing in Vintage City. Eddie Forster is not your typical hero. He doesn't want to be one. It just happens that there is some good in him and he is compelled to do the right thing. Buccellato and Tuazon's story is meant to exist in a timeless city and they are succeeding in making that happen. With many of today's comics, it's hard to simply jump into a story without needing to worry about what might have or might not have happened before. FOSTER is a new world and we all get to discover its secrets at the same time. The stage is being set up for a big war between the Dwellers and humans. Eddie is going to be caught in the middle, if he can get out of the trouble he keeps getting himself into. You'll want to see what happens next as it's not looking too good for our hero.
