Forever Evil #7 - Crisis of Self

3

After a long delay, the finale of FOREVER EVIL is here.

The Good

FOREVER EVIL #7 does plenty of things well, even though there was a delay between this and the last issue. It provides a fun, action-packed issue that leaves readers in suspense. Sure, by the end of the issue, you're pretty sure everything is going to go back to normal, or some relative form of normal, but there's twists and turns along the way to keep the reader interested and invested in the future of DC, including that insane final page.

The book is very Lex Luthor-centric and almost feels like a jumping off point for that character to have his own book. Luthor is extremely fleshed out here through his actions and the narrative driven by his inner-monologue. As long as you have this in your mind, going in, the book moves much smoother and there's no room for confusion.

As far as fanboyism go, there's a TON of stuff to be excited over. First and foremost, it's the first appearance of Ted Kord, who is wearing a very familiar shirt. This leads to many possibilities in the future, including the return of Blue & Gold. That would be pretty dang awesome. The final page marks the return of another character who could lead the DCU into a Crisis. Finally, Luthor knows who Batman is. Again, this has tons of possibilities in the future and could make for some very interesting storytelling.

The art through this book is just as you'd expect: great to look at and tells the story well, visually. Artist David Finch, inker Richard Friend, and colorist Sonia Oback do a fine job at keeping each panel easy to read, clear, and great to look at. Friend's inks are light and not over-powering, and he gets some great depth and texture in things like capes and faces. Finch normally puts out some great work and this is more of the same. He puts out some great art here.

The Bad

FOREVER EVIL has done a fantastic job at shifting who Captain Cold is, along with some other villains, and by the end of this, everything just goes to normal for them. The idea that these "villains" came together to save the world was a really moving part of this story, but after all is said and done, they just go back to being criminals, especially Captain Cold? (A villain with a code or law who could easily become a hero) It seems like all that there was a lot of build-up and great character development with these guys that ultimately gets thrown away, except for Lex Luthor.

This book really should be called LEX LUTHOR because that's who Johns chose to revolve this book around, and that's fine, but in doing so, he makes other characters look like chumps, which is very out of character for said characters.... mainly Batman. He pick-pockets Batman during the issue. It's a small, but unbelievable point.

Dick says "where?" when Owlman is telling Dick he's not giving up on being a team. It makes no sense. This happens towards the beginning of the issue and is NEVER tied up. Considering that Dick being kidnapped and demasked was a MAJOR part of this storyline, you'd think their would be more closure with this, right?

This next paragraph has no barring on the final rating of the book. Because of the long delay for this issue and because a few books are already in post-FE mode, there were a lot of spoilers for readers, like Lex Luthor being a part of the Justice League, and solicits spoiling what happens to Dick Grayson. There are plenty of surprises aside from that, so don't worry.

The Verdict

There's a lot about FOREVER EVIL that was disappointing, even within this delayed issue, but all-in-all, FOREVER EVIL #7 delivers an action-packed, fun issue that does a fine job at telling an over-arcing story. It's a really fun book that will get readers excited about the future of the DCU, but you cannot forget the fact that it leaves loose ends dangling in the wind, especially Dick Grayson. The art is fantastic and the Luthor-driven narrative is well written, but it feels like there's a lot of spite in the writing towards the Bat-characters of the DC Universe. Overall, I recommend this issue though. It is a very fun book with some big problems.

You say this like Wonder Woman isn't going to leave Clark for Bruce.

Considering this is written by Geoff Johns, WW will turn Batman down and Batman will sob in his cave in the secret room he has for worshiping WW, forgeting his duty to the city :-P

@saren: I still think it all falls under the same umbrella though. The laughing just came off as weird. I haven't read his new series, but the last time I saw Sinestro he was doing this whole broody "taking one for the team" thing. A hero complex started comingling with his god complex. I would believe he'd be nonplussed about how Earth sees him, but I don't think he'd be so entertained by it.

@slamadams: I don't think his laughter was supposed to some kind of disregard of heroism, more like he didn't care what Earth thought about him or his "record".

Hey if you want that type of wonder woman for batman than a strong independent woman who wouldn't put up with a person who's not committed to a relationship because of Gotham than you can have her.

I'm guessing (or maybe just hoping) that Owlman will play a big part in the Dick Grayson's new direction as a secret agent. That "where" really threw me off though. Loved the Lex Luthor stuff (both here and in Justice League), and I'd say the jury's still out on Captain Cold, in a good way. They probably could have handled the Sinestro and Black Adam stuff better, especially considering Sinestro wasn't all bad last I saw him in the Green Lantern corner of the DC universe. He was kind of martyring himself, wasn't he? A maniacal laugh in the face of heroism and flying off seemed WAY out of character. Black Adam has enough ego to do that though, but even he has that hero streak in him. He has that "I know what's best" motivation.

@saren: superman is with wonder woman and also has power. Oh and since when has wonder woman cared about money. Go back to your JLUA series it doesn't work in comics.

I give it another year before Diana is bringing a sleepover bag to the Batcave and Clark is alone in his apartment skimming through Netflix and posting pictures of cornfields on the r/Kansas page.

@shadowhuntr: So I guess superman telling wonder woman he loves her doesn't mean a thing?

Sooner or later it's going to have to change from superman/lois because it's getting boring and I'm a big superman fan. The comic book industry is moving with time as well and it won't always appeal to to the old readers.

@thesexyloser: I think even Geoff Johns said his relationship with Wonder Woman would end badly. He'll probably end up with Lois (it was heavily implied that she and him had feelings for eachother in the beginning of the New 52).

Best points about this issue:

  • Ultraman gets his ass kicked
  • Sinestro was a bad-ass
  • The reveal of the child was cool
  • Great homage to the first issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths

Bad:

  • Eh...wasn't a fan of how Mazahs was defeated
  • Some characters, aside from both Lex Luthor's were sidelined too much

I didn't read through the comments but am I the only one having a problem with Lex being able to figure out you know who's secret identity but he still can't figure out that Clark Kent is Superman? Smart move Johns.

A very wise man once said "First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women". Bruce is simply skipping a few steps since Clark has neither money nor power.

Batman better be careful or he'll start casually firing off nukes and celebrate with a night of clubbing.

Darkseid was Multiversal during Final Crisis. Prior to that, no - he ripped apart Anti-Monitor's armour in the original Crisis though.

Cool. Im exited to see what happens. The reason I'm a DC fan is cus of DC's awesome multiverse work. I wonder who he's talking too though.

It was good. I'm mainly just glad that it's done. I kinda wish that DC would take the Marvel approach to events and bang them out quicker, like Infinity.

In all fairness, Capt. Cold didn't return to being a criminal. Luther was just pontificating about what he thinks the anti-heroes would do now that it is over. Even in JL 30 they tease that he is still uncertain of what path he'll go down.

The only thing this made me want to do was read Azarello's Lex Luthor: Man of Steel as well as the more recent Black Ring by Paul Cornell.

I have long posted about the spiteful and petty portrayal of Batman, Green Arrow, and Steve Trevor in both Justice titles. This made it even more plain how much Geoff despises the characters in the Bat family. So much of how he wrote Batman seemed gross and ill intended. If I wanted to read a character be this emasculated I would read up on the Cornell Wolverine run. The idiot anti science aside on how blocking out the moon with the sun is something that even fifth graders would know that would kill everyone on earth in a few days due to the reduction of infrared sun rays from reaching the earth. Or the exponential increase in tidal forces as the moon was pulled closer to the earth due to GRAVITY.

My biggest smh moment is that Black Adam's lightning turns off ALL superpowers now. Not just the powers of Captain Marvel of earth 3. But Johnny Quick, Bizarro, Superwoman, and Deathstorm as well. How are they all connected to one single off switch, PIS.

I love a good Lex Luthor story that makes him smart. This is not a smart Lex Luthor. This is Lex written as a slumming Silver Age Batman. While Batman plays the irresponsible village idiot man child with too much spare time and no brain.

When a master thief like Catwoman has had repeated problems stealing from Bats, Lex does it with utter ease...

And Geoff wankers say it is not spite. I read his Rebirth. I read his Countdown to IC. I have read how he butchered dozens of characters that far better writers flat out ignored, to DC's ecomomic benefit. This will be the last time I ever read something he writes. And if his spite is truly great, I will just do what smart fans of characters he is ruining have started to do, give up and go to Marvel. Where characters inspired by DC stalwarts are written competently on team titles.

seriously though why did they have to hint at that WW/BM thing come on man worse since brice acted like an ass to selina too but now this. Now i guess people get why superman was ready to kill batman for taking her back in Trinity war still messed up though.

Man Superwoman gets around though did not see Alexander Luthor Sr being the father coming, but i sshould have at least expected it. Shame it ended and we didn't get her origin i guess that will be for another say.

Anti Monitor showed up epic maybe Prime will make his new 52 debut soon as well.

All the stuff with Lex was done quite well, but yeah, everything outside of that was kind of poor. Dick Grayson's whole situation with getting his identity exposed and having to pretend to be dead (it looked like all the Justice League plus Lex and Catwoman see him alive and well), the rest of the villains aside from Lex didn't get much attention, Batman not doing much, Catwoman also not doing much and just being "there" most of the time, how Earth-3 Luthor was used and quickly done away with, and how really resolving the CSA characters stories, namely Owlman. He sort of just appeared in a few panels then disappeared.

Forever Evil was the first big comic event I'd read in a good while and man it reminds me why I genrally don't like big crossovers or events. They are the equivalent of Blockbuster cinema and like the anlogy often lack any sense of character and are predominatly plot driven so big action pieces can occur.

I liked the bookending by Luthor and maybe this reads better as a collected volume but overall Forever Evil feels like it could've been 5 issues instead of 7.

At least it's finally over.
