FF #13 - The Bridge

4

Franklin Richards takes center stage in the latest issue of FF.

The Good

If you haven't been following the FF books it might be hard to keep up with this issue, but if you have been reading and keeping up with everything going on in FF and the Fantastic Four then you will definitely enjoy the latest FF comic book. If this issue is about anything, it's definitely about Franklin and Valeria Richards who have taken it upon themselves to set everything that was wrong, right. The result is some really fun dialogue and very exciting moments where the two kids are both pressed for time.

The scenes with Franklin Richards are my favorite moments in this issue. The scene where Franklin is being attacked by flowers is absolutely precious; he really stands out in this issue whereas he often seems overshadowed by Valeria.

The scene where Valeria also shows compassion and concern for Doom is very interesting. There is something about their interaction in this issue that made me wonder about whether or not Valeria would ever turn on the Fantastic Four and side with Doom, and that's not the first time that thought has crossed my mind when it comes to her character. The pacing in this issue is great and is consistent with its previous issues. Juan Bobillo returns as the penciller bringing a fun style to the issue that compliments the story well.

The Bad

If you missed an issue you may have a hard time following as the story does get a little bit confusing. It was a bit difficult to follow along. While I do like the art, I found it a bit difficult to distinguish between the different children.

The Verdict

Overall a great issue from the Hickman/Bobillo team. The story, (while it does seem a bit complicated at times) is a lot of fun. Great pacing and story in this issue, and the art matched the plot very well. It was great to see Franklin Richards stand out a little bit for once and not seem to be overshadowed by the intellect of his younger sister. While I don't recommend this as a starting point for new readers, I do recommend the FF series overall.

Ya I agree. Especially with how Dragon Man looks.

I had the same problem. I didn't like how the art portrayed Alex being the same height as Franklin and Bentley. I always thought he was the eldest of all the children hence the reason he was the tallest.

@yumyumbubblegum: I was under the impression that Alex was at least twice the age of Franklin. I thought he was some where from 16 to 19. I got to look back at my copy of 574 because I think they mention his age there.

I agree with the interactions between Doom and Valeria. There is something there. As for turning on the FF I don't know. Unless it's something that Valeria feels strongly about that Doom agrees with or vice-versa. It is obvious that Doom also has some..............don't want to say attraction because I don't mean it in that sense...............connection maybe.............What ever it is, Doom almost comes off, in his faceless but obvious emotional lingering looks at Valeria, that.......BOND!!!!!!!!!!! That's the word I was looking for. They have some kind of bond. Valeria being named after Dooms mother, Valeria giving Doom his intelligence back, Doom has a bond with Valeria and that can dangerous. It can be really interesting in a comic book but's it's still there and it's cool.

Yeah, he's 19. Hickman's writing is nigh flawless, but his choice in artist is baffling sometimes. I mean, this guy's stuff is really, really baaaaaad.

Well he did deliver her and she was his magic familiar. At least I think that's still current continuity.

Not much more I can say that hasn't already been said. I agree that it can be confusing determining which child is which (but I was glad the Franklin was substantially taller than Val since he should be about twice her age).

I'm really glad that Hickman is continuing to develop Val's and Doom's relationship. Heck when she was first introduced, she was know as Valeria Von Doom, so it's nice to see that the relationship is still their in her latest incarnation.

I haven't read FF in quite a while. What are Artie and Leech doing there and shouldn't they be older?

Also, if Franklin gets older, why don't get Artie and Leech look older? Also, if Franklin gets older, how come Spider-man is a emotional boy-idiot?

Oh yeah, he's magic.

I loved the way Valeria shows compassion for Doom. If you ask me, if opens up possible future stories for her.

I know a lot of people are complaining about the art, and it has it's problems, but I feel like this issue was a vast improvement over last months. Leaps and bounds.

I had that problem with the kids as well. Alex should be older. Also, the moloid

What are you talking about? Franklin doesn''t get older. In fact, he's actually gotten younger, as evidenced by a couple in issue birthday parties he's had.

The cover should have something like:

Yeah, I had the same problem with the art...I didn't like it in general, and couldn't tell who was who. Last issue especially they switched their hair colors around a couple times that made it even worse. I like cartoony and more-abstract styles, like Humberto Ramos or Tonci Zonjic, but the line quality and characterization here is more random and less harmonious than theirs.

Nice to see Franklin take a front seat and really use his power though, and it is interesting to see Celestials twice in one week.
