Fear Itself: The Worthy #1 - The Secret Origins of the Hammer-Wielders Revealed

4

No idea who Grey Gargoyle is? Clueless to Titania's origin? Boy, do we have an issue for you.

The Good

As someone who didn't know some of the origins of all the Worthy, this issue was amazing. It gives you a real sense of the backstories associated, and some motivations of the Worthy we might not have seen prior. A couple of these characters had fallen by the wayside recently, and it was really cool to kind of get a recap of their recent actions before the hammers found them.

Specifically, I really liked Grey Gargoyle's section, as it illustrated his fall from prominance and his urge to be dangerous again; thankfully, his actions in Invincible Iron Man have restored that sense of threat we get from the character.

I still maintain that the most interesting out of all the Worthy has been Juggernaut, whose fight between Marko, Cyttorak and The Serpent. This issue illustrates that backstory for people who haven't been following, and kind of shores up the great story we've been seeing in Thunderbolts' last couple issues. That is how one-shot tie-ins should work: strengthening the story instead of hobbling it.

There's a pretty sweet sequence where The Thing is having a heart-to-heart with Sue Richards that sums up his character in Fear Itself very nicely. Seeing Ben so sad at himself following Johnny's death really sets the tone for the crossover, and shows us some touching interaction between two members of the FF.

The Bad

Not much, to be honest. I bought this expecting exactly what I got; however, some reasders may be mislead a little bit. The Worthy, post-hammer, don't make any appearances in this book, so people may be a bit disappointed. If you've been following Captain America (or any of the Feat Itself prologue books) you may already know the origin of Sin, which would then waste a couple pages in this issue.

The Verdict

Really, there's not much to say about this issue besides "pick it up if you don't know all The Worthy." It'll give you a greater understanding of the characters, why you should care about them and a look into what might happen when all this Fear Itself stuff blows over.
