Fantastic Four

2

Is the reboot of Fantastic Four a step in the right direction?

Fantastic Four had a lot going against it. Fans of the comic book series have been stand-offish about the reboot from Fox, especially after two films from the studio which failed to hit their mark. However, with a new cast, new director, and new writers, can the reboot of the series take this iconic super-hero team in the right direction or does the film feel more like Fox trying to retain the rights to this legendary Marvel team? Fantastic Four is the underdog you want to root for that just falls short.

No Caption Provided

In the reboot, Reed Richards is a brilliant child scientist who befriends a classmate named Ben Grimm. Together, they work on a teleportation device, all the way up to high school, where Franklin Storm asks Reed to come to his school for scientific geniuses, to perfect the teleportation device, which turns out to be a piece of technology that moves matter from one dimension to another.

Reed meets Sue Storm, her brother Johnny, and recluse Victor Von Doom as they work to complete this machine. After some indeterminate amount of time, the machine is completed and in a drunken stupor, Reed, Victor, Johnny, and Ben head to this new dimension and get blasted with energy, and Doom is left there to die. When the machine returns, it emits a blast which hits Sue and the four of them develop the super-powers fans are familiar with. While being examined by the government, Reed escapes and goes into hiding.

No Caption Provided

Jump ahead one year, Johnny, Sue, and Ben are working with the government and need Reed to make the inter-dimensional machine work again. They find him, get the machine up and running, travel back and scientists find Doom there, where he comes back to Earth, kills a bunch of people, then heads back to his dimension where he uses his powers to try and dissolve the Earth as Doom makes its matter into energy for him. The Fantastic Four jump in and save the day, but only after realizing, 30 seconds into the fight, that they need to work together. The final act of this film comes out of nowhere and is an utter mess. It feels rushed, which is saying a lot.

Fantastic Four is essentially an hour and forty-five minute montage for a movie that doesn't exist. It feels like a trailer more than a complete story. There's little connectivity between scenes, where the audience feels dragged from one to the next. The audience is constantly being updated with information they've already seen through expositional dialogue, many times from a government official named Harvey Elder, played by Tim Blake Nelson. In the comics, he's known as Mole Man. His dialogue is 90% explaining what just happened or something the audience is going to see mere seconds later and 10% lines the writers think the audience might say about something that just happened like "That was a good speech." The movie reaffirms what's happening way too much and tries to use those dialogue pieces as transitions between scenes, which ends up being a jolt.

The film never takes the time to breathe or bathe in a moment. It just jumps from scene to scene at a grueling pace, yet the film seems to drag on and the runtime isn't even two hours. Thus, there's a disconnect from all the characters in the film because the audience really never gets to truly know who these people are. Reed is a genius and his parents and teacher (the worst science teacher in the history of film) don't understand him. Ben is his friend and seems like he might be a good one. Sue sees patterns in things. Those three characters come off extremely flat. Johnny Storm likes to race cars. He's charismatic and intelligent.

No Caption Provided

Michael B Jordan is one of the saving graces of the film because he's so much fun to watch, but he's still written a tad flat compared to any other character from any other super-hero film, or any decent film for that matter. Then, there's Victor Von Doom, played by Toby Kebbell, who is easily the most defined character in the entire film, and he holds, in total, probably 20 minutes of screen time too. He's a nomad. He wants power. He wants to be remembered. The major downfall of Doom is that he's introduced as a threat to this new team about 15 minutes before it ends, and the glowing green all over his body looked a tad absurd.

No Caption Provided

However, conceptually and overall story wise, this film could have been worthwhile. As a whole, this could have been a great, contemporary look at this team. Dimensional-travel, super-powers, working for the government, all of these pieces could make up a great film. This was something that truly stood out about it all. There are lots of small moments and glimmers of hope as well. As Johnny, Victor, Ben, and Reed travel to the other dimension, the film makes this turn into an adventure film, and it's pulled off so well and reminiscent of so many great adventure films from movies in the past. In addition, seeing these characters work for the government, on its own, could have been a great film too, especially if the audience gets to see them learn to use their powers, which they don't because it jumps forward a year where everyone has pretty much honed their craft. Even the last 15 minutes with Doom could have made a great film on its own. Fantastic Four simply tried to pack too much into a short amount of time, and while there's plenty other big problems with the film (dialogue, characterization, even the CG), this is the biggest problem. Calling this "too ambitious" does not seem like the right phrase though. This feels more like there's "too many cooks in the kitchen." Too many writers, producers, and the studio trying to pack this film with way too much.

Fantastic Four was a movie I desperately wanted to be good. I was really rooting for this film, but all-in-all, it misses the mark. It's not the worst comic book adaptation around, but it's not memorable. There are moments where the audience could see the potential for a great film or even three great films, but between the pacing issues, problematic dialogue, and the overall montage feel of the entire movie, it sadly falls flat. It's a film that feels like it's just Fox trying desperately to hold on to the rights to the Marvel team.

I was going to give it a try this weekend. Rotten Tomatoes gives it 9%. Yikes. Will wait for the DVD to arrive at Netflix or at my library.

Well you are certainly in the majority lol. Listen, not trying to sell that it as great, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as people are making out to be. Actually as a FF fan I thought it was rather good, I'd see it again in fact. IMHO it's easily better than the previous FF movies, easily better than 2003 DareDevil, easily better than Wolverine Origins, easily better than GhostRider etc etc so it's not nearly the worst comic book movie ever. I stand by 3/5

Haha! Hope it utterly bombs and Fox decides to hand the rights back to Marvel. Maybe then we can get an actual FF movie that does the brand justice.

@outside_85: That film still made money though and has a 70 something percent on rotten tomatoes. The Thursday hall for FF did not look good at all, but we'll see maybe it'll still make a decent amount of money.

If FF doesn't make 122 million over it's entire time in the box office, Fox might just GIVE the rights back to Marvel lol.

I've had a feeling this film was in trouble at least since the 2nd trailer where the tone of the advertising changed dramatically.

While I wouldn't rule out that Trank is a troubled or difficult person to work with I can't help but shake the sense that a lot of this came down to studio meddling. The earliest buzz I'd heard on this film was that Trank was going for a more dark David Cronenberg type of film and there seems to be a suggestion that the early part of the movie lends itself towards that. While I personally find that take on the setting interesting (and would have set it apart from all the other comic based films) I also know that's not necessarily going to be an easy sell to the general movie going public.

I have a feeling the execs at Fox were thinking along the lines that they were backing an Avengers-style team film. Once they got word what Trank was actually putting together the business and marketing team probably had a panic moment and decided they needed to do something completely different and yanked the carpet out from under Trank.

I don't have a problem believing Trank engaged in some troubling/immature behavior but there's also a part of me that thinks there's something of a hatchet job going on in order to excuse the poor ratings of the film.

I think Fox should have gave the reboot the First Class treatment and set the Fantastic Four in the 60s.

As one of this site's absolute biggest FF fans I should be really upset by this, but frankly this doesn't even register as a Fantastic Four movie to me.

All I or any other fan of Marvel's first family can hope is that the rights go back to Marvel so we can finally get a good FF film, because let's be real, if any Marvel property deserves that, it's the team that basically made Marvel comics what it is today.

Don't hold your breath for another FF movie happening anytime soon, even if Marvel Studios gets the rights back. No one in Hollywood will get within Liam Neeson's cock length of this thing. (For those who don't know, that's quite a distance)

scans?

You must not be familiar with the legend. Have you been living underneath of Liam Neeson's cock or something?

Having seen it, it's a decent movie. I'd give it a solid 3/5 (3.5 if I did half measures.) I enjoyed the serious tone more then the cheesy Sale movies and think that going CGI was the way to do Grimm. I'm also happy with how Doom was shown, even if he wasn't fleshed out enough. Doom is the best part of the movie, rumors of his being a simple hacker being lame and unfounded. Taking it's cues from the Ultimate universe was a good way to invest me because I'm such a big fan.

On the downside, Doom wasn't in it enough, Ben's continuous "Help me, Reed!" got old fast, Mara was a better actress then Alba but shoddy eye candy (I don't find her attractive, sorry.) and I found Reed a bit vulnerable to physical attack for being a sentient rubber man. Also the idea of Reed running away was unneeded. Not all heroes need to be "bad people" so they can redeem themselves.

On the whole, decent popcorn flick. I'm not lamenting the price of admission and plan to pick it up once it hits DVD.. I'd also see a sequel if one is made.

I'd say it made money was a given, it was the first Superman in 20 years or so and the trailer didn't make it look like the last of the old ones.

Well it wasn't like we all didn't see that coming....as much as I disagree with how much trailers show of their films these days you can get a good pulse of what a movie will be like from them and this one was not causing any excitement.

Agree with the author that focusing into something tighter would have been a much greater accomplishment than what the writers/studios/whoever is to blame went for. Had they gone the full military route and had none of them been particularly close beforehand (say Sue and Johnny aren't siblings; Reed and Ben only met for the mission) but became a "family" because of their experience and how they'd been changed to would have done a lot more to "modernize" the characters and bring some real emotional advancement to them.

What the studio really needs to do is remove Doom from the equation as a starting villain....just as Superman doesn't need Lex Luthor to be the main villain in every reboot. I didn't mind how they did it here with Doom being on the trip with them...he just didn't need to come back yet as the villain. Let the team deal with someone/something else and by the end/credits show Doom making it back, putting together an armor (rather than the crap bonding excuse they've used for 2 films now) and moving towards his later and much bigger return as a huge threat.

The problem is the Fantastic Four don't have a really good mid-range threat to their canon for a first film. They have really great global and universal threats and enemies but outside Doom nobody that can be a first big bad contender for a starting film. The Ultimate universe had a good answer in re-imagining Mole Man into a scientist creating artificial beings in a very similar vein to DC's Cadmus Labs. That would have made for a good first film threat as you'd have the Fantastic Four, a product of government funding gone wrong and subsequent holding by the military, against a military backed project gone wrong/usurped. Then the filmmakers could have played with the question of whether the four are just superpowered government agents or if they could truly branch out on their own and balance being part of the world and superheroes just the comics does.

A wasted opportunity.....guess we'll see what happens in another 5 years or so.

Reading through this thread is a nice example of the fact that no matter how horrible a thing is, no matter how repugnant, putrid, terrible something turns out to be there will be some people out there that will enjoy it.

I mean there are dudes that love getting kicked in the jimmies so much they pay people to do it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

@batman404: Marvel aren't going to do anything again for another 10 years... Look how long it took Daredevil to be done again...

FF now has 3 films which aren't great so I'm guessing that even if Marvel does get them back... It's a while before we even hear the news of FF working again...

Except Marvel pretty much put Daredevil ventures in motion as soon as they actually got the right back . They got the right in mid 2013 and here we are with a tv show in 2015 ... That's rather quick if FF ever go through similar motions

i realize the studio can play a lot to a movies success, but to me the big problem is that these movies were shooting for too much in the cosmic realm. look at the original stories, yeah they're in the '60s and the prospect of russians in space is laughable at times. but the FF was about friends who came to be a family. if they'd focus more on that and less on CGI then they might get a story that works. reed a introspective scientist, his college buddy ben who's a regular guy. then you have the unrequited romance interest in sue and her jerk kid brother johnny. i honestly felt that the original two movies hit closer to the mark of what makes the FF work. they just had crappy writing and a questionable plot. and it wouldn't have hurt if they had kept closer to doom's comic origin. if they do ANOTHER reboot, then start it in college with reed and ben, have doom blow his face off and run away. jump ahead where reed is developing a prototypical space ship. ben's the pilot, sue and johnny along for the ride. it still works.

Upon seeing the universal reaction to this poor attempt, I am happy to see Marvel's first family on their way back home. Then if Marvel somehow got the rights to X-Men back as well, allowing them to finally make an ACTUAL X-Men movie (instead of a damn Wolverine and or Xavier/Magneto movie disguised as one) then

It's not about Marvel, DC or even which studio owns it. But when it comes to comic based films I want them to succeed. FF is a great concept that has yet to have a truly "fantastic" film. The first official film was a good attempt but it wasn't perfect. Special effects and budgets are able to cover a lot of stories and characters that couldn't have been done a decade ago. Comic based films don't necessarily have to be an action comedy but it doesn't have to dark and confusing either. Marvel makes it films to try to appeal to masses. Not just the fans but those who might a intro to something amazing. You can't please everyone but apparently this film can't satisfy anyone. So I'll save my time and money.

with all the panning of the 2005 F4 it had the best qualities of the family that is totally lacking in this empty shallow vapid film. Trank can blame this all on Fox but he still bears responsibility for following through instead of walking off and claim "creative differences".
