Fantastic Four #607 - Inert

5

Hickman launches a brand new story arc featuring a Black Panther and Fantastic Four team-up.

The Good

What an awesome issue. It's great to see Hickman rope in Black Panther, a character that is such a huge part of Fantastic Four history into the latest story arc. Not only that, but based on this first issue, Hickman is gearing up to tell a rather interesting story. While the last arc was really heavy on the science, this one seems like it will be a story rooted in fantasy and Egyptian mythology. So far, it's really interesting.

When you need someone a little bit smarter to keep up with you to solve a big problem, who better for the job than Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four? I have to say, I really like this team up and its nice to see a story about T'Challa and Wakanda again. I also thought it was good of Hickman to address the issue of Wakanda's depleted vibranium resources. For as long as I can remember, Wakanda's main source of income had been vibranium, and following DOOM WAR Wakanda lost that resource. I don't know if Hickman had to address that, but he did, and I think that's helpful. It helps explain what's happening to Wakanda, an important region of the Marvel universe that is sometimes overlooked.

Mike Choi delivers a beautiful cover, depicting Black Panther on a regal throne. The interiors by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Karl Kesel are equally as good. The pacing in this issue is great; the way that Reed and T'Challa interact is really interesting, and the flashbacks in the issue are placed at just the right time.

The Bad

The only really "bad" thing I saw in this issue was the interaction between Storm and T'Challa -- not having seen them on panel together as a married couple in so long, it certainly felt strange to see that here. The fact that the two characters really didn't interact at all was strange too. However, that might be more my issue with the marriage in general opposed to the portrayal of the marriage here.

Otherwise, that's pretty much it.

The Verdict

I really liked this issue a lot and I'm very interested in seeing where this story is going. I'm a big fan of T'Challa when he's written well, and so far the premise and the characterizations are on point. I think it's nice that Hickman addresses the current state of Wakanda, too. Beautiful art and an interesting story rooted in mythology is certainly exciting. I'm definitely looking forward to the next issue.

I don't think he is the King anymore technically.

Shuri is the queen of Wakanda.

Storm and Black Panther are highly respected and influential individuals though.

I'm not saying T'Challa is dumb by any stretch, I believe he is one of the absolute smartest heroes in the MU. But saying he wanted Reed just because he can keep up with him is kind of silly. Mr. Fantastic just builds gateways to alternate dimensions when he's bored. I also don't think he's on the same level as Hank Pym and definitely not Tony Stark. Hank McCoy and Bruce Banner, sure. It was probably more of a friendly jab considering they've known each other so long, but it's kind of like if one of the heroes was good at pool and asked Hawkeye to play because he thought he may get the hang of it.

I haven't read the issue yet, but I had a few questions.

When and why did Storm and T'Challa get married in the first place? From what I hear they don't really seem to act married.

And, could it be that they are going to have them have a rocky marriage and break up? So maybe they aren't meant to be happily married?

Not sure what the issue is with the marriage between T'Challa and Storm, but they really need to focus in on that. If they are apart, it takes a toll on the relationship. There are consequences for action (or inaction).

Does this take place before AvX or after? This is getting kind of confusing trying to keep up with it all.

Hickman has such a proper hand at writing T'Challa here. Makes me wish he was doing more work with the character. Looks like he could really flesh Wakanda out and tell all kinds of interesting stories within it. Definitely looking forward to this arc.

I read that Marvel has big plans for Black Panther(who ever that is?) and Wakanda. Hickman also implied that he likes to write about T'challa and Wakanda in general so if Black Panther ever got his title again I am praying he would be the one to write it.

Well Speculation is HIckman is writing Avengers so I figure T'challa will be on the team. Hickman might write some other stuff as well seeing as he is going from 3 Marvel Books to 1. Maybe a Solo.

the best part of this book is the cover. I am not as much a fan of Hickman as most seem to be. This arc looks like it will be good but this issue was pretty flat to me. I am a fan of Karl Kesel. But the art in this issue is not his best work. I never understood the marrige of BP and Storm. It is never shown to be loving or sweet. Boy it sure would be nice to see a couple shown to love eachother. The only thing keeping coming back is my love of the Four.

I think storm and Bp not being together in a panel is a symbolism of hickman saying he doesn't know how Storm and BP relationship is gonna end or going to be after AvX.

As for them being married, not that hard to figure out. BP= human Storm=Mutant better Human/Mutant relationships and making them the first AA couples of that sort in the MU. Not to forget Ororo did have sex with the guy when she was 12 just saying, they've known each other for quite some time.

Now that Hickman will probably take over the avengers he should make Black Panther part of the team (not always cause he should also lead his country).

I never card for the marriage between Storm and BP, either.

Surprised Marvel hasn't erased it by now, along with Storm in the Avengers, which is so pointless.

(Of course, so the Avengers have Wolverine as well, what can you do..)

Is this issue a good jumping on point?
