Extraordinary X-Men #3

4

The X-Men are in a really bad situation while Old Man Logan meets young Jean Grey.

The X-Men are in a weird situation in the Marvel Universe. It's been interesting watching the new X-Men and related titles under the All-New, All-Different Marvel banner lay things out for our favorite mutants. Little by little we're finding out how things have changed in the mysterious eight months since Secret Wars ended.

The first thing that's happened is the mutants have become sterile because of the Terrigen Mists that have been released upon the world. In trying to create a safe place for all mutants, Storm came up with X-Haven and the Jean Grey School has been moved. The problem is, the safety of the school is completely reliant on Magik until Forge can come up with other means and she was just knocked out last issue. That means the X-Men are in the fight of their and the mutant refugees' lives.

The other half of this issue is what intrigues me more. Storm had tried to recruit other other mutants to help with the X-Men but didn't succeed. Young Jean Grey has had a change of heart and tracks down Old Man Logan. Both these characters had a strong connection in the past but these versions don't even know each other. It's fascinating to see the affect they have on each other and I am completely on board with this title just for these two. Jeff Lemire has fully won me over with this bizarre situation.

Humberto Ramos' art really captures the mood in both situations. The battle scenes are intense and over the top. It's great seeing Iceman pull out a sort of new trick he'd been saving. The moments between Jean and Logan feel natural and Edgar Delgado's colors really push the scenes over the top. The transition between the two situations surprisingly flowed together nicely.

There's been some fear that the X-Men would slowly be faded away into limbo by Marvel. While the Limbo part is kind of true, we're seeing a pretty strong start to this series courtesy of Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos. Things may be pretty dire for the mutants but that isn't really anything new. This issue is packed with big action scenes mixed with a heartfelt conversation during the strange meeting of young Jean Grey and Old Man Logan. I'm digging this series more and more with each issue and can't wait to see what's coming next.
