Earth 2 #0 - A Hero's Tale

4

Robinson takes us back to the days before the EARTH 2 Trinity was killed, and gives us some insight into the future of his series.

Some spoilers below.

The Good

It is likely that most of the zero issues being released by DC this September will focus on explaining the events that occurred prior to the launch of the 'New 52' last year. Where were these characters then and who they are, are likely questions we'll see answered. The issues are meant to give readers some insight into the identities and back stories of many of these characters.

I will give it up for Robinson; the direction he took with this story really took me by surprise. When I first opened this issue up to read it, I was expecting a lot more backstory revolving around the Trinity since they happened to be the main focus in the first issue of this series. What is their relationship to one another? How did they meet and get together? That first issue left me with a lot of unanswered questions about the relationship between the Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman of Earth 2. So it's no surprise that going into issue zero, I was expecting to have a lot of my questions answered. But this issue isn't about that, and the reader will quickly realize that how these characters got together really isn't that important. It's what led them to that moment and ultimately to their respective deaths in the first issue that is the main focus of Robinson's story.

The issue is told from the perspective of Terry Sloan, also known as Mister Terrific; the smartest man alive. It opens up six years prior, a year before EARTH 2 #1 and reveals Terry's ultimate plan for humanity and for Earth. I think Robinson did a great job depicting Sloan's character in this issue as the ultimate anti-hero -- a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to save the greater part of humanity, knowing well enough that it might mean some heavy casualties. For Sloan, however, a few million casualties can be justified if it means saving the rest of the world from the perils of Steppenwolf. It's an interesting perspective, and not one that the other members of the Trinity necessarily agree with. That's exactly what makes this story interesting.

I think it is good that the main focus is on Sloan, and it will be interesting to see how the character influences Robinson's story in the future.

The Bad

Admittedly, I didn't find this issue to be as good as Robinson's previous issues on this title. This one had a slow start and really heavy expository at the start of the comic, which is fine, it's just not something we've seen a lot of in this series and felt very different from the last four books. It also digresses a lot from the way this book has been written in previous issues since it's told predominantly from the perspective of Terry Sloan. It does pick up a lot, however, as the story begins to unfold.

The Verdict

Although I did feel that there was a slow start to this book, I really wound up enjoying it a lot. It picks up a third of the way through and really sets up an interesting story, giving readers a different perspective. It also allows readers to choose; who is right in this situation? Is Batman being too much of an idealist? It's an interesting addition to the plot.

I wasn't crazy about the art, to be honest. Superman looks very old here and the colors are not as vibrant as we've seen in previous issues of EARTH 2. They look dull and in turn make the art in this issue feel heavy. I didn't find that it matched the tone of the events that took place in this issue very well.

All in all, though, I enjoyed this book and I think the insight it gives readers into the overall plot of the series and the direction Robinson is taking is certainly interesting.

i dont think is what slow at all. The action was their and the art is different style and i prefer that when new artist comes on board for a fill in issue.. Terry perspective was very important for the origin of this book, hence why it was in a 0 issue.

Was renaming him "Mr. 8" a clever word ploy? I'm trying to figure out if I'm still able to call him Mr Terrific. "Mr. Terry Eight" It soooooooort of sounds like "Terrific"

I agree on the 4, maybe even a 3. This issue just wasn't there like all of the previous installments.

I enjoyed this issue. Overall I agree with the rating here. I did really enjoy it towards the end. I thought Sloan ended up being a cross between evil Bishop and Layla Miller. It's kind of a played out kind of character but it's always interesting.

This was the first issue I read and I thought it was great. I'm going to start reading this book monthly and I'm going to buy the volume 1 trade.

@zachkastner: I think Mr. 8 (as in the Eighth Wonder of the world) is a better name choice than Mister Terrific.

Really fun issue. I like how Terry Sloan is Earth 2's Ozymandias. I hope they show us what happened to Terrific and Sloan in issue 5, since we haven't seen them since issue 2.

Didnt care much for the story, but really enjoyed the character of Terry Sloan. Agreed Mr. 8 is a much better name than Mr. Terrific. Looks as though James Robinson will be setting him up as the new JSA's arch-nemesis and that's fine by me. I like a cerebral villain ala Lex Luthor.

@SmashBrawler: Ozymandias vibes were definitely there. I'm liking the heroic villian/villianous hero angle. It reminds me of Maxwell Lord, I just hope he doesn't decide to kill off superheros.

Good issue. It was fun and an interesting POV like Sara explained. I wasnt interested in Sloan at all now I will like to see what future stories he will be in. Is he the huge darker threat we keep hearing about? or is it something supernatural? To be honest I want the regular Earth 2 story to continue cause how it left off with Atom was nuts. I really like this series. Only downside was the art....it was good just Nicola Scotts stuff is amazing. Wonder Woman looked like she was going to bust out of her armor. Good issue Great series.

This issue forced me throw out my old predictions on the villian of this universe. They've been mentioning a big baddass that noones ready for and here I was sure it was Terry Sloane based on issue 2. but now obviosly it can't because hes also trying to get the world ready for the coming baddie. Now it makes me wonder who is this evil stronger than darkseid? For that alone, it merits 4 stars, the only reason why i can see not giving it 5 stars was because it felt so short in comparsion to the other issues.

Did parts of this story kinda remind anyone of Watchmen? Mostly the part where Mr. 8 decided that the best way to save the world would be to blow some of its biggest cities up to me.

I've been picking up this series from the beginning and have felt fairly mixed about most of the costume redesigns and changes to the characters that have been made. This however, was awesome and easily my favorite issue thus far. For the most part I've grown up with Mike Holt as my Mr Terrific, so the drastic change to Terry doesn't bother me at all. In fact he's my favorite character to come out of E2 so far. Can't wait to see more of this guy.

Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Robin, Catwoman, Supergirl and "2 others" were mentioned in the opening panels yet he calls himself Mr. 8? I count nine? Maybe I'm reading this wrong but that confused me. Anyway Mr. 8 (9) was very well done and i'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.

Thats because he is one of the "2 others". The other is still a mystery.

So its Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Robin, Catwoman, Super Girl, Terry, and the mystery guy.

Well I am downright confused now! In issue two, Earth 1 Mr. Terrific came to Earth 2 to meet Terry Sloan (Earth 2's smartest man). Mr. Terrific was attacked and I assumed that he survived and would join the Justice Society. Am I wrong? Has Terry Sloan adopted the Mr. Terrific persona? In 0 issue Terry is obviously not Mr. Terrific, not yet maybe? I could use some clarification pleeeeeease.

I was hoping to see more heroes & villians from Earth-2 like Blue Beetle or Catman.
