Detective Comics #946 - The Victim Syndicate Part Four: Death Wish

5

Can Batman and his allies put a stop to the Victim Syndicate?

This series continues to stray from the typical Batman formula. With Batman working with others, we're seeing him in a different light. Batman has worked with teams in the past, but this has a different feel. We even see a flashback with Batman and Tim Drake discussing the notion of this team and how Batman sees it as something different. This is a great start for the issue as it gives an idea what you can expect.

Many Batman stories are full of action and excitement. James Tynion IV gets a little more analytical with the characters here. The whole notion of the Victim Syndicate and the possibility that Batman's presence in Gotham causes more harm provides some interesting things to think about. Tynion also delves into the thought process of others like Stephanie Brown and even Clayface. I continue to be amazed at how much Clayface has been fleshed out and the fact that I actually care about him now. Also, with one single panel and comment, you're reminded why Batwoman is such a kickass character. This issue may be a little lighter on the action, but there are several great moments. Of course we get a crazy cliffhanger as well.

Eddy Barrows' pencils with Eber Ferreira's inks and Adriano Lucas' colors continue to dazzle me. It's such a joy when you have a solid creative team on a title. You can dive into the intricacies of the story and have your eyes rewarded with great visuals.

This isn't your regular Batman comic you might be used to. By having Batman ally himself with others in the Bat Family, there is so much more to see explored and developed. Barrows, Ferreira, and Lucas are doing an amazing job with the art and color. How many different Batman stories and titles have we seen over the years? James Tynion IV and crew make Detective Comics stand out from the others.

I particularly liked that we got to see the team split up and take out the Victims individually, and each of those ways were reflective of their character. Batman's mostly on defense and is trying to subdue the First Victim without much damage, which shows he's paying attention to their message; Clayface goes for trickery, which ties in to his abilities as an actor; Batwoman charges in bluntly and simply beats up her target; Batwing makes a flashy entrance and uses high-tech gadgetry, and Orphan uses stealth and precision. Very thoughtfully done.

I also liked that Luke and Kate are slowly but surely on the path to being on good terms. They've got a ways to go, but it's a start. And I'm extremely interested to see what Spoiler's plan is.

Another amazing issue from this run of Detective Comics, as always! good characterization, cool action-scenes, and the story is progressing at a enjoyable pace.

This, exactly.

This is what Tynion brings to this book, compare this to King's Batman, and you can easly see who knows what he's doing and who doesn't.

Btw, is Spoiler going to freacking solo the whole bat-team? i mean, on the last page, Cass, Batman, Batwoman and Batwing look pretty defeated to me (they were on their knee's just for earing that noise...), unless Batwing can find a way to block the signal that Spoiler used to incapacitate them, she's going to easly solo them, lol. i really hope not, i'm going to riot if se does.

Change Batwing's name to Flying Fox or anything other than Batwing then i'll be happy. Why isn't Duke in this book...wait i'll answer, b/c he's a useless character.

Couldn't have said it better.

It is good but the problem I have is the mindset of this whole story and how Spoiler seems to go along with it. I mean ''If there was no Batman, there would be no victims'' .... is such a stupid reasoning. No, there would be even MORE victims. Just because Batman stops being Batman, doesn't mean villains will go '' oh, he stopped, maybe we should be nice now ''.

I know Steph is grieving but come on, she cannot be that stupid just because of that. Does she think her own father would've been a good guy if Batman was not around ? Because that is where the whole thing is going and it doesn't make any logical or real sense.

Enter Tim Drake, back from the "dead".

@wowlock: It's not "if there's no Batman, there are no victims", it's "if there's no Batman, then there are no victims *of* Batman". Spoiler is struggling with the idea of vigilante activities hurting other, innocent people. In her mind, if she and others can't do their jobs without innocent people getting hurt, then what's the point? Why do it at all? It's as she says at the very end of the issue: "The world isn't supposed to be like this."

@bat_girl_cc: I gotta pick it up tonight. The shop I usually buy from is across the street from my office and they didn't have it! Luckily I was able to pick up Master Race 7 and All Star 5 to tie me over until I can get to another shop after work. I'll have to weigh in once I read it.

@bat_girl_cc: so I just read it last night, did steps do at the end what I think she did, or do you think Oz will capture her as well like he did Tim?
