Detective Comics #934 - Rise of the Batmen Part 1: The Young and the Brave

5

There's a new threat in Gotham, and Batman has to change his tactics to protect the future.

Batman is often seen as a lone crime fighter despite being known as part of the Dynamic Duo. Batman has been a member of the Justice League and Outsiders, but still spends a lot of time fighting on his own. All that is about to change in a big way. A new threat arrives in Gotham, and it just might be too much for Batman to handle alone. With several allies in the Bat-Family running around Gotham, it's time to make sure they're ready for the danger that is targeting them all.

James Tynion IV dives right into this new direction. The dangers in Gotham are usually pretty serious, but you know it's a big deal when Batman decides to get some help. Seeking out Batwoman and confiding in her is a big step for Bruce. It shows readers how hazardous things could become, and it also shows some growth for Batman. He's been through a lot lately and has managed to come out on top. That still doesn't mean he can do it all on his own. He has a lot of faith in the young heroes in Gotham but realizes they're not quite ready for what's headed their way. We've seen so many Batman stories over the years, and this is a fantastic change of pace.

Eddy Barrows' pencils, Eber Ferreira's inks, and Adriano Lucas' colors are gorgeous. If you're going to have a huge Batman story with so many fan-favorite characters, you have to have amazing visuals. All the characters gathered and appearing here look so dang good. After reading the issue, I found myself flipping back through it to just take everything in once again.

Detective Comics is off to am extraordinary start. James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and Adriano Lucas are spoiling us from the beginning. I am so excited to see where things go from here. Because we've read countless Batman stories over the years, it's refreshing to see a major title take a new approach and deliver a new vibe. This is a comic I can't put down. It should be made clear, this isn't just a Batman book. There are so may great characters here I would be surprised if there wasn't something for everyone. This book is definitely going to be a blast.

Enjoyed the issue. Beautiful art, nice writing, introducing the major players was fun to see, and the Batman-Batwoman dynamic was a strong point of the issue. Also, it heavily feels like it carries elements from the DC Rebirth special so that's a plus.

The creative team isn't reinenvting the wheel, but I thought this was good. Didn't realize how much I missed Batwoman. It's great to have her featured so heavily in an ongoing book again. Really digging the team dynamic. I remember Barrows and Ferreira on Nightwing way back at the start of New 52. I think these guys do good work in the Bat books. Looking forward to the next issue.

Yeah, this was pretty good and I love the idea of this being a Batfamily team book. I'm still unsure about Clayface in this. A very strong 4/5 for me.

I love that there's a mystery afoot in this issue. And the fact that they're gathering up the Bat-family to defend against this unknown foe is great. I really loved Batwoman, and my heart cried a little when I saw Clayface sitting in the movie theater reminiscing. The only problems I had about this issue was the writing. Sometimes it just got too exposiony...like Clayface. When he was telling Batman about his acting career we really didn't need to know how long his movie was, and the fact that he was on the fast track for an Oscar. It helps flesh out who he was before the monster, but it feels so weird with him saying it unprovoked.

Overall this issue did more than I thought it could, and made me very interested for what's to come so 4/5 from me.

I really hope the clayface thing doesn't last for too long >_>

I'd rather have the original batgirl, and current sidekick of this Batwoman in it ( tho DC probably forgot about her, next to all the kids snyder introduced )

Yup, also at the end because he's the only one who can't swing

@ultimatepower6: I think superhero comics in general suffer from too much exposition. Tynion is typically a worse offender than most, but I thought he really dialed it back this issue.

This was a extremely enjoyable functional comic, not built on meta promises and reclimation but the start to just a fun team book. Love me some Batwoman, Cassandra Cain, and Steph Brown too. This isn't a flashy issue but it could turn into seomthing with the way Tynion's been talking up the Batmen.

Not a team guy, I mainly picked up this book because of Steph and wow! This book was great! Not too needlessly wordy like Snyder and it didn't even need a Rebirth lead-in. Besides Poison Ivy and (apparently) Harley and one or two others, Clayface seems a decent choice to redeem and this could become Batwoman's game easily. Loved the dialogue and the art was great. Almost liking the once-a-fortnight format, but not really. Still, the new Detective is an easy pull for me!

I feel like I must be in the minority in this, but I actually miss the heavy exposition of the Silver age. It definitely could cover up for rushed art that lacked the ability to transition from panel to panel without the reader getting lost.

Anyways, really solid issue. One of the titles I am most excited for out of Rebirth.

@revivalmh: I don't know if you're in the minority. There are plenty of readers who really enjoy that type of writing. I think a lot of modern artists have just gotten better at storytelling. Not as much call for describing what's going on or inner monologuing.

It feels like they wanted to go with the blue Batman suit with all the blue lighting they put on him in the preview panels. Maybe they wanted to further differentiate between this shadow fake Batman thing and the real deal, but feels altogether lighter looking from what I saw. Still dark in what's happening, but less depressing? Curious about it...

Really enjoyed this issue. The writing for when Batman is describing each character is really engaging as well as continuing to show how different this "reborn" Batman is when compared to his pre-Endgame-- I mean, how often does Batman speak so highly of his allies? Also the art was just incredible, dude. Definitely my favorite of the current Batfamily artists.

I hope Duke Thomas shows up in this as well at some point. Anyone know anything about that?

I'll admit I bought this issue for Azrael (obviously), but the story was pretty decent, a bit of humor to it which I feel is almost lacking in all the books. A bit of reality - because life does have some funny moments even when things are kind of crap. I'm curious to see where they go with Clayface because I feel like he's pretty underused and really only knew of the character initially from the animated series when I was a little kid and then only from his albeit brief appearance in Hush. Also, I'm in agreeance with @superior_prime_maybe is Tim really going to be 'Red Robin,' because that costume is more reminiscent to his pre-New 52 Robin costume. Hoping this story does turn out to be something terrible like Super Heavy or Zero Year or, really anything like New 52 style that was all big explosions and nuttiness over a great story.

It was good I guess, the inferiority of last weeks Batman Rebirth probably gave this a considerable good will boost. It has a story to chew on which is more than I can say for Batman Rebirth. Still apart from Clayface and Batman the characters were quite shallow, we get a description of their traits and abilities (yeah we get it Tim is brilliant, now just write a good and enjoyable story) along with a one dimensional performance of their traits. Amazing how Clayface and maybe Kate are the only characters with a real hook for now, the other 3 are there because they dont have any place to turn to.

The Colony hopefully has more meat to it than the Court did but secret army isn't exactly something original to Gotham.

Also with Tynion incharge there is always the danger of Harper, Duke and a whole bunch of unneeded characters showing up just cause.

this was an amazing first issue. Honestly thought that having Clayface was a nice touch. Back at the 90's and the 2000's Batman was big on redemption (Azrael, Harvey Bulluck, Harold, Jason Todd, Bane - when he wasn't just a steroid freak and was just as cunning as Batman). It was nice seeing Tim Drake in his costume also, though I hope he becomes as close to Batman as he once was before...

Me too! She's an amazing character with a unique back story and feel she is yet to have her time in the spotlight.

Great read. Glad to see they are making Detective a team book rather than just another Batman series. Tynion was a natural to write this given his great work on the two Batman weeklies. Of course anybody would seem like a great Batman team writer in comparison to Moron-ison considering how poorly he wrote Batman Inc.

@ultimatepower6: I actually liked that part. It served to show just how done that Clayface was with the basic criminal act that he keeps being chosen to play. He was so desperate to relive those few seconds of fame that he had that he was willing to resort to bargaining with Batman and Batwoman when they showed up.

I can't get over the fact that DC is starting to win me back. I hated the whole DCnU but the Rebirth seems to be a way for DC to get some of my money again. I like the Bat-Titans book so far and will stick around for a few issues to see who it goes.

After reading this, I am so mad DC decided to keep Batman and Batwoman apart...they are perfect together, Family and Equals..? what is better than that?

Not sure if I like the addition of Clayface, or the motivation of bring in the 'rookies' but I am hooked and can't wait to see how this plays out

And could we get a message to Eddy Barrows to leave the 'spider-webs' of Batman's cape, because otherwise his interiors are amazing as always

This is exciting! Batwoman is a breath of fresh air, really missed her. She's a strong and different character. I have no idea how Clayface fits, but the cinema part was so sweet and sad.
