Deadpool #50 - Dead, Part One

4

Deadpool has reached his fiftieth issue but the word is he's going to die. Daniel Way begins a story about Deadpool and his death that makes perfect sense.

Deadpool is going to die. Hearing that is bound to make people's eyes roll. But the way this story is being set up, it's not as ridiculous as you might think.

The Good

Remember when we had a bunch of different Deadpool comics coming out? What do we have now? This title. For this title to reach fifty issues while all the other ones have gone away says something. Daniel Way knows what's he's doing. And what he's doing now is setting up the death of Deadpool.

"How can that be?" The only thing keeping Deadpool from dying, besides being a comic book character and death being pretty much meaningless for them, is his healing factor. But what happens if that healing factor is not allowed to work as it has in the past? There's the angle for this story. It's also no secret that Deadpool has an infatuation for Death. This could be the time he finally gets to enjoy the embrace of Death.

Way throws in all the humor you would expect in a Deadpool comic. There's a fine line between funny Deadpool and annoying Deadpool. Way knows the difference between the two. From the cover you can see that members of X-Force are also present. This is a great nod to the fact that he does appear in that book as well. Rick Remender might write him a tad differently but it's still Deadpool.

Carlo Barberi's art is nice to look at as well. It's always curious to see an artist take on different characters. Wolverine might have looked a little squat and Daken a little too muscular but Barberi does a great job capturing and conveying the expression on everyone's face. When you're dealing with Deadpool, you can imagine there is a lot of emotion going around.

The Bad

We're gearing up for a "death" issue. Deadpool might have a confused mind but the idea of him longing for death takes away some of his charm. It seems you can't have Deadpool and a death issue presented in the normal fashion. Deaths in comics lately have been the result of a heroic and noble deed. Deadpool simply wants to end his life because he's in love with Death. Daniel Way has been doing a top notch job with this title and we should have faith that this is going to be a great story but there's that bad taste in my mouth at the thought of another comic book death story.

The Verdict

Deadpool is going to die. It seems like an absurd idea and one that a Deadpool comic would poke fun at. It's possible that's the case but Deadpool is determined that this is what he wants. From recent events, it turns out there is a solution in making this happen. Daniel Way continues to show that Deadpool can be written in a humorous fashion and include a well thought out story. I had gotten burnt out on the Deadpool overload and had to step away, even though this was my favorite series of them all. It doesn't seem likely that we'll actually see the death of Deadpool but there is the chance that it could actually happen. That would be a twist when so many readers have become skeptical over the idea of death in comics. If this is going to be the end of Deadpool, I'm glad Daniel Way will be there to guide him.

"Deaths in comics lately have been the result of a heroic and noble deed. Deadpool simply wants to end his life because he's in love withDeath."

That's what makes Deadpool different- he has a brand of selfishness I think we can all relate to and a disconnect from "reality". And it's what sets this apart from your average death story. Personally, I don't think this arc will end the comic- I think it might continue in the Marvel's version of the after-life. I hope that's the case, because that would be really cool.

Deadpool's had an on and off fling with the entity known as Death since the very beginning. That's a unique aspect of his character.

Deadpool's been my favorite ever since he was actually receiving development in X-Force and then his own title in the 90s.

Deadpool will not be pulling a Gwen Stacy. They're just trying to reignite his popularity and credibility after stretching him too thin.

I really hope this is addressed in a satirical (but not slapstick) fashion. A pseudointellectual spin on the conventions of the medium and what's expected in a death book would be the way to take this. Also, as Doctor_Deadpool has stated, it could be an interesting method to get us to see the various forms of afterlife in the Marvel Universe.

I hope he comes back. With a better writer. Way had no memorable or quirky anecdotes concerning Deadpool's life and how he really feels. I'm not even sure I can remember if Deadpool's jokes/rants/annoyance ran over 2 speech bubbles to really give the impression that he overcompensates.

"You can't win Daniel Way. If you strike Deadpool down he will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

I agree. It would be nicer if they had Deadpool die in a heroic way.

Also there's no way they're keeping Deadpool dead. He has too many fans. Same with Thor.

Daniel Way is by far the worst Deadpool writer EVER.

He totally destroyed the character, making him look like a perfect idiot, doing meaningless things with no interest... and now he kills him... simply because he's... bored?

Just imagine the dialogue:

Deadpool (to Way): Dude, I think you miss something here... Uhmmm, I can't die, hellooooooo!!!
Way: Yes you can, because I AM the writer and I will do anything I like!
Deadpool: So, alright let's say it's happening. Why for?
Way: Because you've done everything.
Deadpool (laughs):  That's even crazier than me... You won't do that, Danny.
Way: Oh, yeah? Well, I CAN and I WILL!!! You know that?
Deadpool: -------------- I'm gonna shoot you, do YOU know that?

Yeah, great message to pass on the riders, Way: Hey guys, when you think you are bored in your lives, just kill yourselves, it's a good thing!

WTF... I hope as soon as Deadpool comes back (which he will!!!), Daniel Way Will stop writting... I wouldn't bare it any more!!!

I have to respectfully disagree with quite a lot of this review. For one, his healing factor isn't the only thing that keeps him away from Death. There's also the curse that Thanos put on Deadpool so that he could never be together with Death, but Daniel Way simply forgets this, just like he tends to do away with a lot of stuff the writers who came before him created.

This leads me into my second disagreement: Daniel Way knowing what he's doing. I agree that he sometimes gives us an entertaining story with quite a few laughs. But he also ignores a lot of Deadpool history created by previous writers, plus he hasn't given us really deep meaningful Deadpool arcs like Joe Kelly has.

This being said; this issue isn't bad, not at all. It even seems to be becoming one of the best stories by Daniel Way ( others are Secret Invasion and the Dark Reign arcs ) and is pretty entertaining and surprisingly well thought-out. I hope Daniel Way will write a final decent arc and than leave the Deadpool title for another writer to pick up.

Deadpool has a lot of fans, that's why this title has reached this amount of issues. But his fans deserve something more than a solely entertaining title. They deserve a title that's entertaining and is actually going somewhere concerning real character development and decent plot lines. So far, Remender's Uncanny X-Force has been delivering a more decent Deadpool.

I'm going to shock those who know me and say I actually enjoyed this issue. I was especially pleased to see Way is connecting the events of Suicide Kings to this (potentially) final story. As a fan of Tombstone, it's a double-edged sword. I'm happy to see he's around, but Way has a thing for destroying my favorites. Omega Red? M-blade to heart and owned by jail bars. Cyber? Agh, my heart! Could another sledgehammer moment be around the corner for ole' Tomby? No idea, but I'm definitely going to read along and hope this story redeems Way in my eyes.

@ReVamp: There's a lot I disagree with, but for what it's worth I didn't mind the issue.

For example, I don't like that Way's Deadpool has this huge desire to die. Cable & Deadpool ended w/ Wade feeling good about being a hero, I wanted to see that continue. A random pharmacist can create a serum that negates mutant powers? Why isn't this a bigger deal? Seems odd that out of all the attempts, one of Tombstone's connections can manage this. Also, I was never fond of Wade having multiple voices in his head. I never minded acknowledging the yellow boxes or talking to himself in that manner, but I can't say I like the whole 3 different voices thing. But, that's an old complaint since that's been around for all of Way's stuff. Despite all that, there are enough elements being put in place that have me curious to see how it'll unfold. And let's be honest, if I'm going to complain about Deadpool dying, I might as well have the facts :D

So bummed to hear about this. Good job Marvel for killing off the only comic character I ever cared about. Tomorrow, I'm going to lay in bed and eat chimichangas all days.
