Deadpool #1 - In Wade We Trust

5

Deadpool enters Marvel NOW! and faces off with America's zombified Presidents.

The Good

I'll be brutally honest, I wasn't incredibly optimistic going into this title. I've had my fill of absurdly goofy and over-the-top Deadpool stories and I've been craving something a little bit more serious. However, Tony Moore's appropriately disgusting art (that poor lamb...) and the hilarious dialogue by comedians Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan's has won me over.

Deadpool's style of humor hasn't been for everyone over the years. At times, the degree of banter can be flat-out obnoxious and dull. Thankfully, that wasn't the case at all in issue #1. I can recall at least three times I legitimately laughed out loud and there were plenty more moments that had me grinning. From Abraham Lincoln getting some degree of sweet revenge to the back and forth conversation between Wade and FDR, this issue was consistently delivering solid laughs. The references were sharp and after this issue I have faith in how Posehn and Duggan will handle the comedic content.

As for the action, it's certainly amusing and complimented extremely well by Moore's pencils. Deadpool's in a pretty repulsive world -- decaying presidents, his skin condition, eviscerating huge monsters -- and Moore's work is a perfect fit. It's almost tough to look at Deadpool at times and there's some hilariously gruesome moments that just wouldn't have the same value without his unique style.

The Bad

There isn't much progression here when it comes to the story or Deadpool's character. Luckily, this is a relatively minor complaint seeing as the content packed into this issue is astoundingly entertaining. Besides, it's only the first issue. I imagine they wanted to reel us in with a gratifying turn of events, and in that regard, they absolutely succeeded. I just hope Deadpool's deeper personality will eventually come out and he won't be limited to only feeding us one-liners.

Also, if Deadpool can rip the monster apart with a katana, how'd it pose any kind of threat to Thor? Not necessarily a big deal, but that one had me scratching my head.

The Verdict

This issue successfully serves as a great jumping on point and also provides an action packed and hysterical story that I believe new and old fans will appreciate. This creative team feels like a perfect fit for Wade and I'm very anxious to see where they'll go with him. Welcome to Marvel NOW!, Deadpool, I'm so very happy you're on-board .

I've been debating whether or not to pick this one up. I can't stand a lot of the Z rated villains that DP is forced to face. Are the Undead Presidents lame or do they pull it off? I don't particularly like zombies or find them funny. And, frankly, the presidents (even undead) are becoming a cliche (Abe the vampire hunter/zombie hunter and Dr. McNinja). Would I still like the book or should I wait and get issue 2?

I did still like the DP vs. vampire storylines although vampires were cliche at that point. So, I might like it...

I like Deadpool ok and this creative team. But I think I'll stick with Uncanny X-Force and my old Joe Kelly back issues when I want a dose of Wade.

It's not the sword, it's the man holding the sword.

@chocobojam: You might miss out on some famous references made by each President, but overall it shouldn't take away too much from the issue.

@FatFriar_16: Unfortunately, I can't tell you what you will or won't like.  I think they did a good job with the Presidents (so far).  I'd say give the first issue a shot.  If you do end up enjoying it, cool.  If you don't, at least you know there's no need to follow-up (at least for this story).

But, it was a let down =( not as good of a start to the series as I would have liked. And, Deadpool's mind was just too empty without his extra voices ='(

Sorry to hear it.  Personally, I liked having a less absurd version of Wade, especially seeing as he was still delivering some solid jokes.  But hey, to each their own, right?

I thought this book was ok... but only ok. It just wasn't Deadpool enough for me. I thought his recent appearance in Avenging Spider-Man was better. Deadpool is definitely one of those characters with a distinctive "voice", and I personally prefer the crazy, zany version.

Okay, this isn't a reboot. So it's a prequel? What happened to the story of him losing his powers?

The inner voices was the absolute worst thing to happen to Deadpool ever. Way couldn't write one competent, workable Deadpool. Never mind three. Deadpool: Wade Wilson's War proved that Swierczynski is the man for the job. X-Men Origins: Deadpool, too.

This was fun. Just fun. That's all.

I loved this issue but I sure do miss the voices. I always felt that the white box was actually Daniel Way talking to him. I have to admit when I saw that preview with the totally uninspired godzilla-looking monster I was worried. The fact that the current main antagonists are zombie presidents is not only very funny but also intriguing.

I was worried that Mistress Death wouldn't get addressed in the Deadpool Now but this issue reassures me that she's somewhere down the road. There's no way Death wouldn't notice zombies on earth and in fact she might be the one responsible for this threat as a twisted way of flirting with Wade. I am very hopeful for Deadpool's future just not so hopeful for our country's future.

I'm typically a DC-only reader. But "Marvel Now" is apparently offering an easy starting point, so I decided to dip my toe in this one. Fun read. Not a deep read, but that's not why I was interested. Will probably check out Fantastic Four on Wednesday, and maybe Waid's Hulk as well. My wallet can't take much more of this.

I'm in your boat, buddy. I'm picking up Deadpool and Captain America as my first-ever Marvel books. We'll see how long that lasts. Getting too many books as it is.

THE VERDICT

A perfect example when not taking risks, Deadpool suffers mercilessly. The story struggles when it shouldn't. The artwork feels thrown together. Unfortunately Deadpool's healing factor is bought back into play. If you want to read real Deadpool check out Daniel Way's latest incarnation.

THE RATING

1/5 Stan Lee's

The last issue of Way's run implies the serum negating his healing factor is only short term.

I was extremely disappointed with this. My personal gold standard for Deadpool is Deadpool Max by Lapham and company. The jokes in this new Deadpool #1 are strained at best. The humor style amounts to this "OMG so random zombie presidents omg". The art was good.
