Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 - Book One

4

The third arc of Frank Miller's series begins here.

This is a spoiler-free review of DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE #1 which goes on sale on Wednesday, November 25.

One thing that made DARK KNIGHT RETURNS such a fantastic book was more than just that it was Superman and Batman fighting it out. The book was a reflection of society and what it could head towards to. Almost three decades later, we have DARK KNIGHT III, which hits on all those same tones and themes once again. We're still presented a world where television pundits are arguing on television and those voices seem to overpower everything else. Vigilantes are still being hunted by those sworn to protect the people.

DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE #1 feels like you're coming home to the house you grew up in. It's familiarity and something new all at the same time, but what really makes this first issue work well is that readers don't have to be uber-knowledgable with all the nuances of the previous two series. DKIII actually works well for those new to this universe, as a stand-alone issue. It doesn't over-explain anything that's going on, but the first issue does set this world up incredibly well. Obviously, readers new to the Dark Knight world will want to go back and read the rest, but this first issue doesn't alienate new readers.

The writing team of Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello is the perfect match up for this book. They're both two incredibly iconic storytellers whose writing style compliments one another. It has the same type of flow the original book had. Obviously, when reading part three, it's hard not to compare it to the original, but this issue, on its own, feels good. It's a fun and intriguing read that shows a lot of promise for the future of this mini-series. It doesn't have the impact I would have hoped it had, but it has more than enough to keep readers invested in future issues.

The stand-out aspect of this first issue is the art of Andy Kubert with inks by Klaus Janson and colors by Brad Anderson. Artistically, this is a phenomenal team for the book and Kubert does a great job at capturing Frank Miller's original work, while adding his own flair to each page. It's a bit strange to see Kubert's style taking heed from Miller's original art, but that really adds cohesiveness to the overall look and feel of the world, connecting it to the previous issues. In addition, Janson, who worked on the previous books, gives the book more connectivity by really doing some quality inking work.

DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE offers a solid and entertaining read. It didn't blow me away, but it shows an immense amount of promise for greatness. Miller's world opens up even more as Brian Azzarello steps in to work with him and the artistic team is a wonderful fit for the first issue. DKIII doesn't feel like something that's trying to be DKR. It is its own story that pushes this world forward. If you're a Batman fan, then this is something you need to pick up on new comic day.

@deathpoolthet1000: I honestly think Azzarello is going to be doing most of the heavy lifting writing wise. Miller is probably just helping outline the plot. Just my guess.

Come on now, when did everyone start completely throwing Miller under the bus? Sure he's wrote some not too great things of late, but the dude obviously knows how to tell a good story given his immense portfolio.

@drellassassin: Not throwing him under the bus. Im a huge fan of Frank's work, especially his Daredevil stuff. I just think the well might've run a little dry is all. You're right, his portfolio is legendary, and he is one of the best ever, but lately? I mean let's be honest, he's lost a step.

Considering that Miller now wants to do a fourth installment without Azzarello in order to tell the story that he really wanted to tell, I'm guessing the same thing.

Not picking up this garbage. Anyone who plans on buying this might want to flush their money down a toilet instead. Much more efficient way to waste money.

It was good but didn't exactly blow me away. The final page reveal is just stupid and may have been a big hit back before JPV,Dick,Terry etc but it just came across as underwhelming and the character herself is so eh.

The Wonder Woman portion was the best,Azz really is the best thing to ever happen to that character. The Superman portion was also good but predictable and will start a chain of predictable events.

I'll probably get this in trade,I'm not exactly looking for Wonder Woman in a Dark Knight book.

The new "cool" internet narrative that Frank Miller has always been awful needs to die. Hate some of his new work? Cool, so do I. Think the guy is a tool? Cool, so do I. Think TDKR, Daredevil, or Year One suck? No, you're wrong. Art may be subjective but Frank Miller is responsible for a lot of changes the comic book industry underwent and he shaped Batman into the character he has been for decades now. Same thing with Daredevil. It's fine if his noir style isn't for you, but I've seen way too many trying to undercut his importance to the industry and I'm sick of it.

Rant aside, I'd also give DKIII a 4 star review. It was a solid start to the series and the reveal at the end has me intrigued. Look forward to seeing where this goes.

This. The reveal had even less impact considering it was spoiled intentionally by the writers.

The mini-comic was good too.

Which I found baffling, they kept this whole project and its plot elements a big secret only to spoil such a big plot point nonchalantly.

Agreed. I really don't know what to think too. I mean they can't possibly have done it to bring people in. Because I don't think people will be so interested in Bat-Carrie as they would be in the return of Miller's Batman. Especially now with Gordon being Bat-Chappie.

This book is blessedly coherent. It's solid not amazing but hey maybe this won't be terrible. It reads like a great formal sysnthesis of Miller's Return and Strikes Again art styles.

I picked this up today and I must say that I wasn't blown away. Hopefully the second issue brings a bit more to the table or else I don't know if I'll continue to pick this up.

3/5 for me.

Dark Knight Returns is one of the greatest comic stories ever. Dark Knight Strikes Again is one of the worst. I'm going to read this series because Azzarello is doing most of the work. Without him, I'd probably skip it.

Is it better than DK2? Cause I hated everything after issue 1 in DK2.
