Daredevil: End of Days #8 - Part Eight

5

"Mapone." This is the final issue. Will all the answers be revealed? This has been such a sad story yet it's been so amazingly good.

The Good

This is it what it all comes down to. In this series we saw the final days of Daredevil. Moments before his horrific death, he uttered one single word, "Mapone." Ben Urich discovered this and made it his mission to discover the meaning of his dead friend's final word. This mission has taken him all over the future New York City in the Marvel Universe. We've seen many friends and foes of Daredevil and have discovered many subtle facts about what's potentially to come. It hasn't been a happy story at all but despite this, it's been so great.

This shows what Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack are capable of. We've seen many truly great Daredevil stories over the years and this ranks up there with the best. Let it be said, this is not the feel good story of the year. It's hard to believe you can have a series continue where main characters perish. For a series with DAREDEVIL in the title, it goes way beyond that. This is about him, his life and what he's left behind. Bendis and Mack do a great job of defining who Daredevil is and was and will be.

The art is a visual treat as well. The entire series has had Klaus Janson doing pencils and Bill Sienkiewicz doing finished art. There are also painted sequences by David Mack. Those that have read many of my reviews know I have problems when there is more than one art style in the same issue. That is absolutely not a problem here. It works nicely and perfectly. The differences in the art makes sense. It actually enhances the storytelling but separating the different points in the story.

The Bad

Nothing bad - except that the series is over.

The Verdict

This has been and will be one of my favorite miniseries of the year and the year isn't even half way over. We've seen many great Daredevil stories and we can now add END OF DAYS to that list. Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack make a great team in deliver this dour tale of Matt Murdock's last day and beyond. It's a heavy story that isn't too cheerful. But what the story represents and how it is told makes this worth reading and re-reading. The art team of Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz and David Mack make it all even better. It is sad that the story is over but you can't deny how great it's been reading it all.

HOLY $H!T!!! This was not what I was expecting. Well actually it was. I expected a good ending. The art is sick. The cover is gorgeous and I have a feeling it's going to be on "Cover of the week" post they do here every weekend. This story did a few things. It made me remember why Bendis is derserving of the praise he gets, and on the book that set him on that path. Man I wish he was still doing DD instead of Waid. I really like Waid too. I just HATE what he's doing with DD right now. I know a lot of people like it, and it blows my mind that they do. I think it's a crap. This here tho. I can't even really mention anything without ruining.........anything. Bendis did us this favor tho. He set it up for another mini-series by himself in the future, about the near future of DD. It's not 50 something DD either. It's "near" future, which makes it awsome. I can't wait. I can see a series out of this if he wanted to do so, and I hope that he would. I know we'd all be buying it. He could make it like Ultimate Spider-man. Even tho there is an Ult. S.M. and there is an Ultimates comics, sometimes I get the feeling like Ult. S.M. is a stand alone title. All the other Ultimate titles mesh more. They always have. Ult. S.M. could survive all by itself in it's own world and so could this book. DD Beyond. Just not as beyond as Batman Beyond. Read the series and you'll know what I'm talking about. This rant of a post by myself is so long, I can't even mention the beeeeuuuutiiiiifuuuuul art. Just look at the cover.

For once I totally agree with the 5 star rating that I think Comicvine gives out to often. 4 stars to me is a "Must Read" and there is nothing wrong with that. It means I must read it, 5 stars is "Classic" This was with out a doubt a "Classic"

As much I haven't care for most of Bendis works of recent, gotta admit he does a great consistent job with Daredevil.

Just finished it. Deserves a standing ovation for the way it all panned out at the end. The prime definition of "worth it."

David Mack might be one of my favorite artists. I had him do a comission for me. I already had an Echo, several Kabuki characters and a Wolverine, so I asked for a non Wolverine x-man of his choosing. (Since I'm an Xmen fan) He made this amazing cyclops pic just using black paint. It's even more amazing how fast he does his art.

As much as I have ever worked and drawn, I have never had any success in watercolors. His art amazes me.

Dream Team = Mack + Bendis on X-men

My only question being is what caused Bullseye to go nuts, why would Mapone cause him to become like that? Or did he accidently killed himself? Maybe I should re-read issue 4.

Amazing ending. I'm so sad it's done. This, the Echo story, and the original story about Timmy elevated David Mack to one of my favorite artists. Penciling a book is one thing but what he does is art. The art throughout the whole series from Janson and Sienkiewicz was amazing too. Bendis and the team did an amazing job and I'm glad Matt continually has great teams working on his books (Check out Daredevil: Dark Nights if you haven't. It was also amazing).

I do have one question, though:

Is there any significance behind the name 'Mapone'? I obviously know the significance throughout the story but it's a really dumb name for a girl and I was wondering if there is another meaning with it that I don't know about.

@zoddguts

I interpreted Bullseye's breakdown as this:

When Daredevil said Mapone it made him realise that Stick had been reincarnated and would train a new Daredevil and that this would just keep happening. So even though he finally killed Matt Murdock, he'd never be able to kill Daredevil.

That's just my opinion though.

@daredevil21134: I always wished that their relationship would be flushed out more, but then Milla happened, which I loved her by the way and am still sad she was written out :( Maybe some day we will see the pair back together...I mean Bucky is in the wind and Black Widow is in Secret Avengers now...*sigh* they are going to bring back Clint and Natasha again aren't they?

@general_pandemonium: Thats what I'm thinking. It would make sense. I guess that would go with the stipulation that Bullseye has met Mapone or at least knows who she is?

I liked this series quite a bit. Almost everything I have to say is a spoiler, I guess:

I liked the idea of Punisher being his new Stick. I haven't gone back to check, but didn't Punisher say something when he broke out about that being why he broke out? Maybe it was just that Urich's visit have him the chance.

I honestly thought that it was kind of dumb when he tossed the envelope. Sure we can see that as a signal that he wasn't as driven/hooked on this as his dad, but I thought it would be more important to him. And Fury didn't really do anything to make him reject it like that. It was kind of childish. Plus, the darn girl was right there in the bar--why go outside and give him the folder? Just point her out, introduce them!

I do also think Mapone is a kind of lame name for a girl. I did like her quite a bit though. Also, if we buy into Punisher's idea that his last words were something he felt guilty about, why would that be? Honestly he had litters of kids with practically every women he ever met in this series, so I don't think it can be because he didn't pay enough attention to her or anything like that! Just because she was blind?

I thought it was kind of interesting that Murdock's protege, who he trained, was apparently much less skilled than his daughter, who I would guess was trained by Natasha.

I do also agree that I'm not sure why Bullseye would go ballistic on hearing the name, unless he already knew something about her. But regardless I think Bullseye was more obsessed on Matt and wouldn't care so much about other people.

For me, it was a good series with a few weaknesses. Generally speaking I liked the ending emotionally.

@daredevil21134 Marvel just needs to release a Punisher comic where Rachel Cole is a Bad ass, Frank busts out, Elektra needs to go see Matt seeing as the last time they met was not the happiest of times and I'm sure she'd like to have a few words with Mattie. Flash can continue being my 2nd favorite spidey book (next to Scarlet Spider) and DP can carry on being DP.

Thunderbolts started with a great team but killed the characters. Its sad when you only lie the series now for two of the four man team (Red hulk doesn't count as he really hadn't done much)

Man, I almost got really scared when Tim threw the Mapone file in the fire. I was thinking, "No WAY are they going to leave us hanging with this." Good thing they didn't. What a DAMN good mini. And now with it's end we've got Dark Knights to look forward to! I have gotten very used to two DD titles a month. Keep it going Marvel, if you know whats good for you.

This was brilliant, but I think it could've been even more amazing had it been a couple of issues less. Just a bit more condensed. It'll read amazingly as a trade, though.

With that said, Daredevil fans do not know what they want. Ever. "MATT IS ALWAYS GETTING SCREWED!" *Waid makes things more light-hearted for a bit* "THIS IS DUMB! I DON'T LIKE JOKES!" *Gives Matt's best friend cancer and screws with him using his dead father* "OMG HE MADE A KARDASHIANS JOKE?! THIS IS GARBAGE!"

S.M.H. at these people. If Mark Waid walked on water, they'd say, "Meh, but he probably can't swim."

I agree. I also agree a continuing from this would be good even with Bendidis writing since he started it. I was wanting to check out the Thunderbolts but not so much now :(
