Daredevil #14

4

Daredevil’s sporting a brand-new look, and an attitude to match, as he makes his name known and presence felt across the Bay Area.

The Good

Things aren’t always what they seem, apparently. Rather than being at the heart of a new criminal endeavor, the Owl serves a much different role, the Shroud’s new motives are a mystery and there’s a new player in town with a very personal reason for seeking Owlsley out. All the while Daredevil’s gone about as public as he possibly can, not only outing himself but wearing a slick, practical new costume for work AND play. Chris Samnee, who’s got a storyteller credit as well as supplying the linework, has created a beautiful new suit (of the three-piece variety) that not only brings out the more Luciferian side of “the devil,” but seamlessly merges the roles of Matt Murdock and Daredevil, blurring the lines between the two even further. Mark Waid, sharing a storytelling credit with Samnee, gives us his usual razor-sharp dialog and gives us an overview of what, exactly, has been happening in the intervening time between last issue and this. Once everything is caught up, the issue proceeds at an excellent pace, showing a much happier Murdock who not only glad-hands the people he saves, but even seems to be able to show up to trial (mostly) on-time.

Samnee’s linework in this issue’s many, many action scenes is beautiful. From his pacing to his blocking to the new character design, everything looks fantastic and is presented in a way that’s easy to follow, but never overly simplistic. There’s a tremendous sense of impact and force behind every punch, kick, jump and everything else in the action, and the search for the Owl that follows it flows evenly from one page to the next. We also get some stellar color work from Matthew Wilson, making the bright spots their brightest and the dark spots cloaked in shadow and mystery. The tone that the visuals set up early on is a much more upbeat one, making the sudden downturn hit that much harder, but also feeling earned.

The Bad

As great as the pacing gets once the issue catches the reader up, the stuff that happens before comes off as disjointed and even a little confusing. Obviously there’s a tease leading up to the big unveiling, but that combined with the jumping around with little indication of how much time has passed both since last issue, and even since the events within this issue, makes the proceedings lose some of their punch. It was difficult to ascertain how much this had become the new status quo because of the strange time passage.

The Verdict

As tricky as it was getting here, this issue feels like a fantastic new start for this character, only without any of the renumbering that so often comes with that. Samnee and Waid feel like they’re putting their unique stamp on DAREDEVIL, and it’s an audacious but highly, highly worthwhile one. While it’s unclear exactly how long this will last, it appears that the ride will absolutely be one that’s worth getting on and incredibly enjoyable. Here’s to hoping it sticks around for a good, long time.

I sure hope not. Dark and brooding Daredevil (which I like as well) is coming to Netflix soon so you'll get your fix. There's always the old Miller/Mazzechelli, Nocenti/Romita Jr., Smith/Quesada, Bendis/Maleev, and Brubaker/Lark runs to read as well. Plus Daredevil: End of Days.

@jonny_anonymous: Why? The story is really good, I'm no fan of Daredevil, but this comic is really well written. Your complain should be about the Daredevil's complete character change. That's the main reason some people have been complaining about this run.

A tv show isn't going to repair the mess that Waid has made, nor is reeading the same stories over and over again.

The story's only good if you pretend it's been about Spider-Man the whole time.

@jonny_anonymous: in your opinion obviously. If continuity drives your story habits then I think you're in it for the wrong reasons; especially nowadays at both Marvel and DC. It's clearly not a "mess" in many others eyes, I was just trying to offer other places that you can get the gritty fix with DD but that didn't take lol

Even Shakespeare had his critics, I guess.

I really, really hate this "you're only as good as your last one" mentality that seems to pervade a good deal of popular entertainment nowadays. I'm not advocating lowering one's standards and accepting any junk that may come your way as "fair enough", on the contrary. I only wish that people would be more objective about what they take in and understand that absolute perfection in any endeavor is so rare as to be almost impossible and that (for a multitude of different reasons) they aren't all going to be winners. Waid and Co. have done an outstanding job on this title during their tenure, it may be my favorite run on the book. This team has created a lot of personal goodwill, and I have defended almost all of their decisions. I think that most of the criticism leveled at the book has frankly been baseless, unfair and exaggerated nonsense - I still do. And when I listen to the fans who cry out for a total retcon, I think to myself, "this is why we can't have nice things". Nevertheless, I would like to think that I've remained reasonable enough to call fowl on some of the elements that didn't work as well as they could have. And my feelings could still change in the handful of issues this team has left. When the preview for #14 came out and all the grumbling about Matt's wardrobe began popping up, I was really tempted to say something about how fans were overreacting to a single panel in what amounted to a three-page preview which had been removed from the context of the larger story that it was a part of. Because of that previously mentioned goodwill I feel to the creators, I'm still willing to play Devil's Advocate (so to speak) and remind everyone that this change is in no way going to be permanent, that the only one who thinks that Matt's new suit is a good thing seems to be Matt himself, and that these are all elements in a larger arc that has gradually been building to its advancing climax where, it is implied, it will all come together and pay off.

Having said all of that, I hope the payoff is worth it.

@jonny_anonymous Why? waid's run has been great, I don't know your personal reason, but I know a lot of people hate how daredevil with waid hasn't been super dark and gritty, but I mean come on, realistically daredevil wouldn't be depressed forever, he would eventually recover and start enjoying his life. If anything this is probably more classic daredevil as in this has more of an old time comic vibe to it, like when daredevil and everyone was first debuting. Also sorry, this isn't really all pointed at you more of an in general thing, but seriously I am curious to know why you hate this run so much when it is so much better than most of what Marvel is putting out nowadays, minus star wars of course which is amazing.

I'm sure Jonny will give his reasons why he doesn't like it but I can tell his criticism offthe run isn't strictly based on the fact that it's not dark and gritty.

@jonny_anonymous: Honestly I have been loving the hell out these Daredevil comics. They have been the only new stuff I still try to read monthly. And this is coming from a person who started reading with the Frank Miller stuff and then preceeded to the Denny O'Neil stuff. I know how dark and gritty Daredevil is and honestly this still is has cool as the past ones to me.

Ever since I started reading Daredevil with the Frank Miller comics there has always been that one moment where I feel like Daredevil is me. I'm fanboying.

Long story short: I love the new run almost more than all the other comics I read. Its refreshing.

Anyway was the grit in Daredevil what made his comic refreshing in the late 70's/early 80's?

The girty noir is what made Daredevil unique, Marvel doesn't have a single comic like that. Now he's just a bog standard superhero along the lines of Spider-Man, Ant Man, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye.

@jonny_anonymous: I get what you're saying. Marvel really doesn't have a comic like that now. I just thought all the grittiness was being a bit overused with every hero recently. It was refreshing to see Daredevil have a shift in mood for a while. I do get what you're saying though.

I like the suit, it would be a really cool move to give it to him...except that it's basically a copy of Moon Knight's Mr. Knight persona, which pulls it off better anyway. Sort of a depressingly rip-off look, intentional or not.

This was... yeah, okay, this wasn't good. I think the point is showing Matt going nuts in a different way, though. Doesn't excuse the suit or Murdock's cavalier attitude at his job, but it might wrap up better.
