Daredevil #12 - Lawyers in Love

5

Matt Murdock realizes that as long as he is Daredevil, he'll never get the privacy he wants to go on a date like a normal guy. But that's ok.

The Good

If you've ever wanted to see Matt Murdock reminisce about the days where he and Foggy studied Law together at Columbia University, you're going to absolutely love this issue. The issue opens with Murdock on a date with Kirsten McDuffie, the new Assistant D.A. in New York City. Over the course of the series the two have been very flirtatious with one another, and now they finally get to go out. Yet, with the entire City thinking that Matt is really Daredevil, you can imagine how difficult it would be for the poor guy to go on an actual date with a girl.

I like action in my comics as much as the next person. I think the action can really contribute to making a superhero comic book interesting, but at the same time it's also nice to see a writer divert away from an action packed book and get into the nitty-gritty of the story. That's what really made this a fantastic book; it dug deep into the heart of Matt and Foggy's friendship, and really demonstrated that it isn't just Matt's superhuman reflexes that make him Daredevil; it's his heart.

Mark Waid delivers another issue chock-full of amazing dialogue. There's a tremendous amount of character development and a huge push in this story that I found to be really impressive. Additionally, artist Chris Samnee teams up with Waid on this issue to deliver a superb book. His personal art style really compliments this issue brilliantly.

The Bad

There's nothing bad here. This is a really gorgeous and well written issue.

The Verdict

I really like the tactics Waid utilizes to push the story in a different direction. This issue he uses events in the present (the date as well as the character that appears on the final page of the issue) to move the story forward, as well as looking into the past. By having Matt reminisce about his college days with Foggy he is putting the friendship these two characters share on display ad demonstrating the true character of Daredevil. The pacing in this issue is perfect, and each scene will keep you on your toes. Yet another solid jumping on point for new readers who don't currently read DD but have been wanting to start.

Tbh, this was the best DD issue in awhile. Even though the series has been solid the last few months, it just wasn't as good as it was in the beginning. Samnee definitely left an impression on me again. Hope he gets to draw the book more often. Foggy/Matt relationship was just a great one shot story. Matt sure saved Foggy alot during law school. Keep it up Waid. More of these type of issues, Please!!!

@Kallarkz: Probably just spiteful morons.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, love the less actiony, more character driven issues like this and the one with the bus crash in the snow a while back, nice break after the Omega Effect but looks like things will be getting crazy again next issue.

I'm not reading this series, mainly because Ben Affleck destroyed Daredevil forever for me.. but every issue of daredevil recently seems to have the most amazing cover art.

Typical internet forum bullcrap: Everything good is an overrated piece of crap. Just like Lost and Call of Duty

Chris Samnee, I wish you could draw every comic. Just because Matt doesnt wear the costume in this issue doesnt mean it's short on action.

I've seen some utterly ignorant and non-sensical comments on forums and sites in my day, but you're Usain Bolt-ing your way to the gold medal, my friend.

You won't read Daredevil comics in 2012 because a movie made 12 years ago wasn't to your liking? Are you actually serious?

Not only does it catch a lot of sweeping negativity (Matt's character was trashed, but the way they did the radar sense was AMAZING), but it was a 103 minute movie...once. You're saying that 103 minutes of footage were enough to ruin a series that has been around since 1964, amassing over 500 issues?

You are precisely the kind of "fan" that gives us a bad name. If that movie ruined Daredevil for you, you never liked Daredevil anyway.

Your exactly right, I've never read daredevil.. ever, this series may well be great, but first impressions mean something, and I got a bad first impression, and so now I'm not particularly interested in the character because of that. Plus I'm already reading way too many ongoings. Chill out dude/dudette. I was just trying to pay a complement to the series.

I repeat:

A 103 minute movie, that gets more shit than it deserves, has stopped you from ever reading a 500+ issue series that's been going since 1964? Honestly, there are Daredevil runs worse than the movie. Chichester's Fall from Grace, for one. You are missing out. The movie is nothing like it.

That's like not reading Batman because you saw Adam West's show first. That's how ridiculous you're being.
