Civil War II #2

2

Tony Stark takes Ulysses hostage.

After following a very memorable first issue, where the fate of James Rhodes was revealed and She-Hulk was close to death, Tony Stark kidnaps Ulysses in order to get some insight into his powers, which in turn makes the Inhumans pretty mad.

One of the bigger problems and this event as a whole is that there isn't a sense of danger or urgency but the characters are acting like it's about to be the end of the world. The book constantly presents the idea that the Inhumans and Tony Stark are going to fight to the death because Tony kidnapped Ulysses, yet there seems to be only minor conflict between these characters. Readers know what this is building towards but the stake just don't feel high enough to be an all-out-war.

The original Civil War presented a complex story that dealt with morality, safety, and freedom. There's a reason it's held to such a high standard. Thus far, Civil War II doesn't doesn't offer what fans has hoped for in a followup. As far as an individual issue goes, it's alright but more of a let down over anything else.

The best moments in this issue come from the art of David Marquez, with Justin Ponsor on colors. He's capable of a lot of memorable moments and displaying great moments of action as well. His page and panel layouts are dynamic. Each page feels fresh. The two-page spread of Ulysses' vision is epic. One of the coolest looking scenes in months. The best part of this series is the art and colors.

The second issue of Civil War II is a bit of a letdown. While the first issue didn't blow us away, there were some interesting developments. Issue #2 doesn't live up to the hype, and while it does offer up some incredible and colorwork that keeps the issue interesting. The high stakes this book presents just don't feel that high. We'll see how the rest of this story plays out but this is just a bit of a letdown.

Yikes...! I was looking forward to reading this. I was hoping this would bring the story together for me a bit more, since I read the beginning out of order ( read CW 1 before I read the FCBD portion)

but have not seen a 2 star review in some time. Keeping a open mind, but that is concerning to hear, especially as I was confused and felt a bit..disappointed by what I had read thus far..

But typically Marvel starts with a solid concept, looses steam in the middle and the final issue ends on a high note

The art and the cool moment with Medusa at the start were the only things I liked in this. Don't think I'll be continuing with this book or any of he many tie ins. Really enjoying Rebirth so my money will be going there.

Well deserved 2 stars. I was lucky to grab a digital redeem code from a friend.

There was no reason for Tony to do what he did this issue. Characters and motivations are written all over the place. And the dialogue is always shifting with awkward tones. Bendis proved me right.

There still is hope... That the comics medium isn't only based on passion and the Sturgeon's law can indeed be applied and consequently make it evolve just like in the other fictional mediums...

Damn 2 stars . I guess David Marquez is the only saving grace for this event . I was looking forward to reading the tpb, not sure how I feel about it now . It's a shame because the story looks visually stunning

This was horrible!! Why's everyone acting so out of character?

And are Jennifer and Rodey actually dead!??

on the bright side, I can skip marvel for a while and buy all the rebirth stuff without worrying about my wallet

Things to learn from this-

1. Don't do events for the sake of it.

2. Don't do an event just few months after a major event when the status quo is still being set up.

3.Keep bendis away from big events.

4. Keep bendis away from big events.

Too many marvel events are plot focused while ignoring characters and their motivations and well... Character. Bendis in my opinion has just benn not all that great with doing accurate portrayals of established characters. Plus there's how he makes everyone talk the same but I'll leave it there.

We all knew this event would be underwhelming and I am glad that you are reviewing it objectively. I completely agree with your opinion, Mat and I think that it will probably go from bad to worse. I can't see how possibly Marvel can redeem themselves with this event, it was doomed from the beginning.

The best moments in this issue come from the art of David Marquez, with Justin Ponsor on colors.
Yeah. Without it it would be 1-star or 0-star. Whole issue in two panels.
How anybody would stand for Iron Man side after this is very big question.

What the hell. Just going full villain with Tony again I see.

Was eventually going to pick up the trades cause I love the Inhumans, but might have to pass.

Ok...Finally got to read this...I can see the 2 stars now.. Honestly, nothing 'new' happened here. You could very easily skip this issue and still understand what is going on.

But again..I am left thinking.." Why are they fighting again?" and I could think of a few ways Tony could still make his point with the methods he uses...

And..really?

  1. So I guess he didnt get the news then..?Ok, sure then..we have not seen him in months, and we are just chilling in a lab in Utah? because..?
  2. 'I don't fight Tony Stark'...*sigh* soooooo bad
  3. He JUST got done saying as an Engineer, he has no weaknesses, but then he says.."D'oh..I forgot he was on the Inhumans...this place was so sweet tho.."

So issue 3 ought to be good trying to explain the last few pages lol

My whole problem is just that the situation is so petty and not that bog of deal. It seems all over the place too like they arent sure which way they want to take the story. A Mutant and Inhuman war would've been better, I'm looking forward to CW ll X Men

I tried to defend the first issue of this. Conceptually this could be a good story. It probably would be a good story, with a different writer. I remember a time when Bendis could write some great books. I've conceded to the fact those days are gone. Marvel should have kept the Ultimate Universe going and let Bendis do whatever he wanted with it and it's characters. He should be kept far away from the main 616 universe. But hey, that Marquez art is phenomenal.

David Marquez and Justin Ponsor's beautiful panels are wasted on this series.

This 'event' has no build-up and ultimately no rhyme or reason (aside from coinciding with the films). The tension over this new Inhuman is such a weak plot point.

To be honest, I feel like this event is only an 'event' to set up a future Civil War movie maybe five or more years down the line (featuring the Inhumans).

I was more confused with the tone of this, it started serious and dire but then we see Karnak being stupid trying to fight a hologram. Also Tony Stark in this issue is all over the place, first he's furious and short tempered to joking around.

@judasnixon: I've been enjoying DCs events. Rebirth has been stellar so far and Convergence, while it didn't actually change much, had several very wonderful books in it.

This was pretty interesting a bit comical at times, but I actually enjoyed it. However yeah @mrfuzzynutz your right when Beast said "'I don't fight Tony Stark" I was like What??? LOL

Hey EVERYONE i'm calling it Carol is going to try and throw Banner into Jail for something he has NO CLUE about. And Tony will come down and argue she's dumb.

Anyone want to take?? Any suggestions??

@uugieboogie You should read Civil War 2 X-men...it was actually interesting as well.

At least in this one, Tony isn't acting blatant-ass evil and his actions actually make sense for his character. I'm sorry, but that will never be okay with me.

I mean if tony didn't kidnap the guy and that whole scene happened the book would have been fine. its a simple dilemma, Banner is going to kill them all, should we kill him to stop it especially when we know that once the future is learned it can be changed. The fast way and the just way, it's a decent premise that took a odd turn with Tony taking that kid. I get that hes emotionally compromised by losing Rhodes but this was to reckless even for that.

@2cool4fun: Convergence (the event book, not some of the other minis) was so bad that I couldn't bring myself to finish it. However, that is the big outlier because I have enjoyed all of the DC events I've read besides Convergence. It helps that there have only been two (3 if you count Rebirth) line-wide events since the New 52 started back in 2011. This is the 9th Marvel event in that same time-frame and that's if you aren't counting the Ultimate Universe events. It has gotten to such an insane level that there seems to be a line-wide event happening at all times with Marvel.
