Captain Marvel #2

4

Captain Marvel tries to beat her hero's record, but is faced with something she definitely did not expect.

The Good

I think the cover to CAPTAIN MARVEL #2 really sums up what this issue is all about -- on it we see Carol Danvers dressed as Captain Marvel flexing her muscle. That's pretty much what this issue is all about. I think that writer Kelly-Sue Deconnick is doing a great job portraying Carol as this very no-nonsense, hard headed soldier who is strong and uses her strength first and foremost to her advantage. There's really no difference between the way she's written and the way some male characters we see are written; and in this situation, I think that's a good thing. I just hope she doesn't start sounding like a complete meat-head. Not that there's anything wrong with being a meat-head...

There's a great sense of progression in her character between the first issue and issue #2. At first we see a Captain -- a soldier -- who is uneasy about taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel out of respect for Mar-Vell, the former Captain Marvel. By the end of issue one we see she's grown more comfortable with the idea of taking up that mantle, and here, in issue #2,that's something that is fully realized.

Right off the bat Carol is dealing with a situation that is completely unexpected -- she's thrust into a predicament that she doesn't know how to act in and she's not exactly thinking about the repercussions of her actions. All she's really got on her brain is how is she going to whoop some Prowler butt. The pacing in this issue is good and this does seem like a fun way to start her ongoing series, having said that, I did have some problems with this issue.

The Bad

While fun, the dialogue isn't that compelling. I'm not particularly fond of the dialogue of some of the supporting characters that appear in this issue. Additionally, I'm not convinced that Carol Danvers wouldn't know what to do in the situation she is faced with.

The next problem I have with this series so far is that it doesn't really speak to me. I don't feel excited about what's happening next in this issue. I don't feel like I am totally intrigued and interested in the events and the goings on that we see here. One issue in and she's already thrown back in time? I don't know how compelling that is, at least right now.

The Verdict

One thing that DeConnick is doing right is getting you to really root for the character in this series. While I'm not crazy about the way her series has launched, I am hoping it begins to pick up. I am finding that I am interested in Carol's character. She's a little bit masculine and has a hard edge about her that makes her stand out from a lot of other female characters, and I like that. I am hoping that things pick up, however. I also really enjoyed the art in this issue a lot. I think it matches the pacing of the series.

Love her name, costume and her hair :) Oh and Sara I think the cover is a homage to the Old propaganda poster "We can do it!" from days past. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/12/We_Can_Do_It%21.jpg

I dug the first issue, but passed on this one. I can't really afford to get into another bi-weekly series.

Standing in Marv's shoes is I am afraid a little bit too much for Carol Danvers. I mean, can you imagine her battling Thanos?

@Dernman: her hair is let down in the series, if that is the only thing stopping you. It is pretty good.

@pspin: I may not like those things but I'm not letting it stop me from reading or enjoying the book. If I stopped reading a comic for every little thing I didn't like I wouldn't be reading comics anymore. :p

This book needs to stop -- just stop. Its taking everything I love about Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel and pooping on it. I feel insulted by this book; attacked.

@TwistedGamer: There is another issue coming out in two weeks. Plus the Previews catalog for the October issues, has two issues coming out that month. Gambit also has another issue coming out in a couple of weeks.

@Nova`Prime`: It's a homage to Rosie the Riveter, and very fitting for comic about a woman being able to take on a mans role.

@Dernman: Got it, I thought you meant that was why you were not reading it.

I WANT to like this book so much, but like Babs said, it's pretty standard boiler-plate fare so far.

This is my problem with the series. It's ok, but not great. I'll give it one more issue to win me over.

Disappointed - I imagined we'd focus on cosmic adventures. This issue was just meh, to be honest. Hope we can kick it up next issue.

The costume still bugs. It really does. BUT, the writing is amazing and the art style has grown on me. Having more characters around has made me realize I do not hate the art, I just hate it whenever Carol is stressed up as Captain Marvel. The other people who have shown up in this series so far have had great style and really unique in look and given a lot of personality not just with their clothes but facial expressions as well. Everyone squint your eyes, look at pages without the capmarv costume and realize this is some solid art.

The most important part is the STORY took a great surprise turn and the issue felt satisfying and yet totally left me excited for #3. DeConnick can keep delivering issues that feel satisfying on their own yet push towards the next I see this going for a long long run.

Oh. Last thought. Those covers gotta go. Horrible. HOOORRRIBLE. Does not do the series any justice.

@UnderDogs_OverBoard: I too hate the hair but this is still Carol 100%. Just like... she needs to stop with the heavy hair spray when in costume. At least her hair is still normal when in civilian clothing! Phew.

I think what De Connick what's to talk about here is the treatment of the women in the service more so than do a Carol Danvers story. Which is actually a really interesting topic. She spoke about it a bit on Kieron Gillen's podcast and she's really passionate about that part of history. I think the issue I have here and why I don't think it worked amazingly well is that she's taken that and put too much of a superhero twist on it. It didn't feel authentic for the time period. I think if she had of stayed totally loyal to the source material of women in the army during this period it would have been a really compelling read.

Till now is cool let's see where this is leading to it was pretty weird the time travel but that is kinda normal at Marvel this days.
