Captain America: Civil War

5

The latest Marvel Studios film gives you pretty much everything you asked for in a superhero fight movie.

This is a spoiler-free review.

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has been unleashed upon us. Even with the big number of movies in the overall franchise, Captain America: Civil War has felt like an overly ambitious film from the beginning. We expect to see a large cast of characters in the Avengers movies, but this was supposed to be a Captain America solo movie. The good news is, Anthony and Joe Russo manage to exceed our expectations with this latest installment.

The superhero films these days feel like they're becoming overcrowded with characters. As we see each installment in the franchise released, the solo movies now feature team-ups and cameos. With all the Marvel characters in this third Captain America movie, it could have been considered the third Avengers film. What it really comes down to is, it doesn't matter what you call it. We get a jam-packed action movie with all the elements we've come to enjoy: action, humor, character building, suspense, and some heartache.

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Russos took the Marvel Studios films to a different level. It's not often you have a sequel that's better than the original. With Civil War, they've upped the ante even more. Unlike other action films loaded with a vast number of characters, one of the advantage the Marvel films have is we have a great understanding of who they are in this cinematic universe because of the past films. Despite this advantage, there is still a lot of character building going on, especially with newer characters like Scarlet Witch and Vision. We still have more to see. New characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man are introduced (with fantastic results). Older characters even see some growth as well.

The main crux of the movie may be Captain America's team and Iron Man's team fighting each other, but there is much more going on. There's obviously a bigger reason to everything happening, and it all unfolds nicely. There are different elements to the plot with different locations and developments that occur. You can easily say that the repercussions from this movie will still be felt the next time we see any of these characters on the the big screen.

The fight and action scenes are on a grand scale. What drives each blow and impact home is the fact you care about these characters. We've gotten to know the older characters pretty well and the new ones become more and more likable. Seeing the friendships between them get torn apart is nearly heart-breaking. Each character has their own motives and sense of beliefs as to why they chose the side they're fighting on.

Captain America: Civil War shows the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn't slowing down any time soon. The stakes have been raised and action and drama delivers what you want. Is it perfect? Nothing really is, but this comes pretty much as close as you can get. I always said Captain America: Winter Soldier was the best Marvel Studios film. That title has now been given to the Russos' latest venture. Even with an overabundance of characters, the movie doesn't skip a beat. The characters and movie universe are allowed to grow even though there is so much action happening. This is what Marvel (and superhero movie fans) want and deserve. I can't wait to see it again.

I think they shouldn't have focused on the Avengers when they discussed the accords. If The Avengers are the only group specified in the Accords then simply quitting should allow them to do as they please. If the accords only covered enhanced people then I don't think tech doesn't make a person advanced. Falcon, War Machine, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and Widow shouldn't be considered enhanced in my book. Also does Tony have the right to deputize anyone he please in regards to the accords? Because Spider-Man didn't sign them and he fought on Tony's side so if any member of the team has to sign the Accords wouldn't recruiting Spider-Man violate them? If Tony has that right he could've just claimed he deputized Cap and WS at the end of the movie and everything would be fine. I don't know, it just seems so vague that i wonder if Captain America is walking down the street and sees a bank robbery would he have to get UN approval to intervene? I know the movie is long as is but i would've liked a scene of the Avengers at the beginning being an effective team and stopping an attack or something with little to no collateral damage. Because all we have seen so far is New York, when they get the scepter in the beginning og AoU, Sokovia at the end, and the scene at the beginning of Civil War.

@mike_fowler: well thats the only memorable thing he does

cry i get it he lost his family

but this is zemo he supposed to be one of captain america best villain's

and i honestly dont think zemo would of even cared if he just of gotten cap killed , if the avengers still stood after

and i get that zemo first appearance is in a avengers comic but still he and cap have a deep hate and zemo would of made sure if any avenger dies its captain america

but i understand the movies are different form the comics

but sometimes different isn't always better

also a nit picking thing how does he afford to do any of this?

like is he selling make up door to door off screen?

idk like most good things with the story alot happens off screen

@mike_fowler:Thats not the point, don't take it off the context. The whole versus reasons were far fetched, especially for new comers such as Ant-man and Spiderman. Avengers were devided more than once before, some of them weren't even reading new rules of ass licking as far i saw only Cap did. And 1 boy story didn't justify Stark suddenly becoming pro government lap dog. What did Stark do after chitauri invasion, saved civilians, looked for survivors and get them to the hospital? Nope, shwarma. What did Stark do in Avengers fighting Hulk and hitting him without even looking where he would land? What did he thought when crashed Hulk through building while blowing it up with rockets, civilians that would get hurt because of falling structures? Nah, he joked most of the fight. And now suddenly his brain turned on because of 1 boy or Stark is really that slow? Why is Rhodes ok with this, he came from being government lap dog to Avengers and now easily switch sides again? What of Black Panther that said: "hell with my father wishes, i am gonna kill some people, i never respected my father anyway."

But frankly this whole movie would've ended when a guy that shouldn't have any knowledge that he had blew up electro station and somehow a government top secret place loses power supply and don't have any backup thus allowing him to get even more info.

But no everything would've ended even earlier. How the heck did top secret government agents missed to check the looks of a doctor is beyond me, he'd be caught at this stage rather easily.

that one about the doctor was just dumb. i was thinking the same thing. however, i didn't let it ruin the whole movie for me.

this movie to me felt like a batman v superman done right. both movies did the same thing but some differences. and here three things the movies are similar.

superhero's on opposite sides fighting check

main villain put hero's against each other check

the government cant tolerate the actions of a superhero check.

i think visually this movie look like crap but the story was good. visually batman vs superman looks good but the story was a mess.plus i think New York wasn't the avengers fault, they should have not really blamed them for that vision wasn't even there.

Or maybe its just that good?

People enjoying a MCU film and critics having something nice to say about it = easy to please sheeple and paid off movie critics. Batman vs Superman is high art so it is no wonder you stupid sheeple couldn't appreciate it and it is too unique for the small minds of dishonest critics >:{

5 stars?? That's generous. It was good... but it focused WAYYYY too much on Bucky to be titled 'Civil War'
I hate to be all hipster and say it's not like the comics... but wth???

Crossbones was seriously wasted. I felt like he had a lot of potential, perhaps as a recurring nemesis/elite goon. Frank Grillo did a good job with what he got though.

Yay! Finally watched it. Not sure I could go full 5 stars, but damn close. The only reason I take off points is the overuse of shakey cam during the first 2 fight scenes (didn't completely ruin the scenes but came close) and at the end the plot relies on Iron Man kind of losing his mind right after getting his head on straight. But I did like the actual ending and I even liked the odd, simplistic bad guy plot.

Definitely the best superhero battles money can buy though. Sooooooo good. And Ant Man and Spider-Man had some of my favorite scenes.

Most comic book fans should have The Dark Knight in their top 5, even if your a marvel fan. Hand down probably the greatest comic book movie of all time, coming from a DC fan (lmao not biased though).

I have to agree that the action scenes were well-done, pretty intense and that final showdown between Tony, Cap, and the Winter Soldier was everything I was looking for. Black Panther was done surprisingly well too and the humor was on point for the most part. I really liked it.

5 stars is a bit of above this movies weight sure it was fun but not 5 stars of fun by any means

am i the only one who found the CGI so heavy in certain scenes that the motion was stuttery? meh just wondering spider-man was so squeezed into to bump the marketing his introduction seemed it was added from re-shooting he served no purpose and as a spidey fan i would have liked it to have made more sense plus the suit is horrible just saying

throwing some villains in the mix would have been interesting

felt more like a avengers movie which was cool but there was a lot going on i was expecting more if im honest cant say id watch this a 2nd time like i have with many comic book movies

maybe it just wasn't for me im glad family and kids of course adore it wich is great

but not 5 stars

I agree with this review. Until now Winter Soldier was the best Marvel movie but now it's Civil War. I've seen Civil War 3 times now and it gets better each time. Ive also been watching Winte Soldier a bunch as well. I need to rewatch Age of Ultron soon.

Can't wait for Tom Holland's stand alone Spider-Man movie and the Black Panther movie.

Tom Holland is now my favorite cinematic Spider-Man.

First, the nit-picking:

Opening action and fight scenes when Black Widow was involved seemed far too "herky-jerky" with the camera, too reminiscent of the Jason Bourne movies with Matt Damon. Too obvious they were trying to hide the stunt double's face all the time.

Spoiler:

Why was there a camera right at that spot in the middle of nowhere conveniently placed when Bucky as Winter Soldier killed Howard Stark and his wife? Ummm...O....K...... Unless...unless....it was faked and staged? Hard to say.

Zemo was kind of weak to a degree, but one almost felt for him, actually. Although it is possible he will return to inflict more damage with his schemes. Even as he pointed out, did he really fail concerning what he did to the heroes?

No major villain fight scenes. They could have made use of the other "Winter Soldier" candidates but having Zemo off them was a bit of a buzz kill. I get why he did but I was looking forward to a free-for-all between them and Cap and everyone else.

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye looked kind of rough and tired in several scenes. I really like the actor but man, he didn't look very healthy in a few spots; like he just woke with a hangover.

I know it is nigh-impossible to do any of these movies without a lot of CGI, but there were some spots that were too over-the top with it. Ant-Man and Spider-Man stand out in that regard.

The kid they had portray Peter Parker...what the heck...did they CGI his HUGE frikkin' melon onto a skinny kid's body, like they did with Chris Evans in the first Captain America movie? I mean..come on. He and Zemo also sounded far too feminine with their voices.

Although as a comic book reader and fan from the "old school" I kept wondering if newer people to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be able to follow everything, even if they had seen past Marvel movies. I think myself and only one other person in the theater chuckled or got excited about some key moments. It was eerily quiet throughout the movie regarding my own viewing, and felt out of place.

Griping over, plenty of awesome scenes, great action that WAS done right and just the overall "super hero" stuff was fantastic.

I hope we get to see more of Scarlet Witch's gams. Although she isn't sporting the classic costume, her legs made up for it. Yes I am being pervy.....

OK< great movie. 5 Stars? Maybe G-Man is too generous with his rating but I would def give it at the bare minimum 4 and can agree it would be worth 5.

Do see it if possible! I would watch it again if I could!
