Bloodshot Reborn #9 - The Hunt, Conclusion

5

It's the final issue of "The Hunt!"

The end of the second arc of BLOODSHOT REBORN puts Ray, now Bloodshot again, up against the last person with nanites in their body: a child. Ray comes to a crossroads, as he may need to kill a child in order to complete his mission.

While this is jumping towards the end of the issue, Bloodshot dealing with whether or not to kill this child, in order to get the nanites out of him, is a pretty suspenseful moment. The stand-off between Ray and Toby, with Bloodsquirt and Ray's ex around as well, is this nice back and forth match which Jeff Lemire paced out exceptionally well. The scene has a great flow and movement to it and this book doesn't linger there either.

The biggest problem this issue struggles with is that as a single, stand-alone issue, it's a slow moving beast and doesn't pack that "umph" that a final issue for an arc should. Everything is wrapped up nicely, but this is an issue that will read a bit better in trade or reading the whole story in one sitting.

On the flip side of the coin, that the big thing I like about this issue. I like that is strays away from contemporary comic book storytelling, not having certain beats hitting at certain points in the issue. It keeps the reader on their toes. It also helps that Jeff Lemire is writing this since he's fantastic when it comes to breaking storytelling conventions.

Artist Butch Guice, inker Tom Palmer, and colorist David Baron bring a darkness and grittiness to this book that really sets the tone for the story. Baron's colors really do a wonderful job when Ray is talking to Toby as the backgrounds have a nice gradient, giving the characters a bit more pop. Also, there's a lot of highlighting on Palmer's inks. He does a nice job with the crosshatch shading, but never overdoes it.

The final issue of "The Hunt" is a fantastic conclusion to this arc. As part of the whole story, it wraps everything up nicely and this is something that will read exceptionally well in trade. Once again, the second arc of this new Bloodshot book was fantastic and this is turning out to be one of Valiant's top series right now. BLOODSHOT REBORN reinvents Bloodshot as a compelling and intriguing character. I highly recommend you check this series out.
