Batman: The Dark Knight #11 - Cycle of Violence

4

Batman not only has to fight Scarecrow and try to save Commissioner Gordon's life, he also has to deal with keeping his girlfriend happy.

The Good

I was never a big fan of Scarecrow. I could respect his place among Batman's villains but I found him borderline between the really great Bat-villains and the bad ones. Gregg Hurwitz is making Scarecrow a great villain. Not only is he proving to be a ultra-creepy character but the flashback to his youth does wonders in making him that much more interesting.

In trying to solve the case, we get to see Batman act as a detective. This isn't something we've seen a whole lot lately. There is plenty of suspense and action to continue to make this a solid issue.

David Finch does a superb job in making Scarecrow scarier than before. He's not seen as a silly villain in a mask but now has a frightening side to him. I said it before, but having this series take that approach is a good thing. I strongly believe if we're going to have different Batman series, having different vibes works to make each one stand apart from the others.

The Bad

I can appreciate the subplot of Bruce Wayne trying to maintain a girlfriend. It could be a good thing for Bruce to attempt to have a life outside of the Bat-costume. I worry about where the story will go. Bruce doesn't have time for a girlfriend and she's already losing her patience.

Hurwitz has taken the book to a new level and is doing wonders with Scarecrow. It's still a little disturbing to see Scarecrow's plans involve kidnapping and essentially terrorizing children.

The Verdict

Gregg Hurwitz and David Finch are making THE DARK KNIGHT another solid Batman title. I was never really impressed with Scarecrow as a villain but Hurwitz's writing and Finch's depiction is moving him up among the ranks of the Bat-villains. Batman now has his hands full. Children are getting abducted, Commissioner Gordon is missing and he has to try to keep his girlfriend happy despite his constant need to rush out on her. No one said life was easy for Batman. I was ready to give up on this title but am thrilled to find the combination of Hurwitz and Finch a winning one.

Loving Hurwitz work here. After making Penguin scary, I had no doubt he would rock this comic.

I am extremely well-versed in Bat-escapades, but I avoided this series initially now I'm thinking I might pick up 10 and 11 and jump on now.

I'm really loving this new creative change by Hurwitz. The Dark Knight is easily rising up to be one of my current favourite Batman titles.

There's no way this girlfriend sticks around more than 10 issues.

She'll probably be gone before the story arc even finishes.

@InnerVenom123: Or she'll finally figure out what his deal is. He's practically making it obvious every time Alfred comes in and Bruce darts off.

@G-Man: "Oh look, the police commissioner is in danger. Well, I've got to run off for no particular reason."

The only flaw with Hurwitz's take on this book is her. Everything else is perfect. He needs to axe her.

The problem with the book is Finch and not Hurwitz. The problem is that Finch is too pretentious as an artist so he does a bunch of splash pages and just really big artwork. It takes away a lot of story from the pages and doesn't leave enough room for the book to end on a good cliff hanger. A lot of other artists have that same problem. All of Liefeld's books are like that because he writes for the artist, but pretentious artists like less story. Another example is the guy that does Green Lantern New Guardians and Green Arrow. It takes a lot away from the writers.

Manapul and JH Williams do a great job of showing off the story rather than the art and it compliments the story. You can tell the difference between an artist trying to sell themselves rather than trying to sell the story.

Im enjoying the creative change as well, but It's weird to me how the relationship seems a little serious in this book when it's not even mentioned in others, but whatever I can get over it =)

I agree with what y'all have said. I loved that Batman employed some of his detective skills and even utilized child psychology in speaking to the first victim. Where Crane is terrorizing the children psychologically, Batman has been able to use his own methods to his advantage.

It took two readings, but did you notice that Crane is collecting the children's tears? I wonder if this is to make a more potent fear toxin? Is it to eliminate the fear that he has for Batman (the one thing that is able to scare Crane and link him to humanity)? Can't wait for the next issue.

I was considering dropping this series since the original writer was just terrible and I wanted to save money. But I decided to give this new writer a chance since Scarecrow is one of my favorite Batman villains. I am really enjoying this arc and the new writer. I think I might keep the series for a bit longer after all! Thanks a lot :P

I'm gonna be optimistic about Gregg Hurwitz's outline of this whole arc because I feel he relies heavily on Finch's artwork to tell the story and deliver plot and character elements;so it seemed this arc with scarecrow should be about five issues(?) or longer to be spread out evenly and not feel cramped, which is what I found David was trying to do before he stepped down as writer. It did seem short, but like I said David's art can say so much.Fastest page-turner for me of the week.

This is one of the many things i enjoy from the batman tittles, him using his detective skills to deal with this F up villains. I just hope that they don't messed up Dark Knight like they did with detective comics which had a good start but then it went down.

Scarecrow sewing his mouth shut is one of the dumber things in the last comic.
