Batman: The Dark Knight #10 - Hollow Man

4

The series has a new writer. Gregg Hurwitz is bringing a dark story to Gotham and Batman is going to have his hands full.

You can see from the cover that this is going to be a slightly twisted story. Gregg Hurwitz is ready to take the series in a new and dark direction.

The Good

I've been on the fence with this series from the beginning and I'm happy to say this was a pleasant surprise. As much as I love Batman, I sometimes wonder if we need all the different series. Looking at this issue, I now see what place this series can take and why it can be necessary. In the past I've been a proponent for tighter continuity in the different titles. It could be frustrating to wonder how an arc in one Batman series fits in with the others.

Reading the first issue by new series writer, Gregg Hurwitz, I remembered that was the original plan David Finch had. I could totally see a Batman series rooted in the darker and possibly supernatural areas of Gotham. The very first page sets the tone immediately. How creepy is it to see someone sewing their own mouth shut? This isn't going to be a happy Batman story, especially with children involved.

This isn't just going to be a big spooky story. There are other story elements here that work to add to character development. Bruce has a girlfriend but she offers some great insight into who he is and how he thinks. It's great to see this addressed as we don't often see the Bruce Wayne persona on display. I've often wondered how much time exactly does he put into keeping the charade going. We also see Jim Gordon reflect on his kids. That includes James Jr!

David Finch's art captures the dark and gritty essence needed for the story. It fits nicely with the story in making me feel this is a completely different kind of Batman story. I'm not sure if that's truly the intention of the series but I am perfectly content with the idea if that's what the angle will be.

The Bad

I do enjoy seeing more of the Bruce Wayne side explored but it does stretch the limits of credibility (even though, yes, we're talking about a Batman comic). If this series is tied in the same continuity as the other titles (and we are supposed to believe that), it seems extremely unlikely he could have the time to keep any pretense of having time to see someone on a steady basis.

There was a scene with a maternity ward in the city. It seemed very strange that it would be at street level with a giant glass so passerby's could see all the newborn babies. And if I'm being nit-picky, I question the physics of how Batman kicks a guy out of a car. I could be wrong on that though.

The Verdict

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT is headed in a new direction courtesy of new writer Gregg Hurwitz. We are given a separate feeling dark and gritty story and it's a great feeling to be able to read a different type of Batman tale. As much as I'm enjoying BATMAN, BATMAN AND ROBIN and BATMAN INCORPORATED, I can now welcome this series if it means telling different sorts of Batman adventures. With the way this story arc begins, I'm almost scared to see where Hurwitz is going to take it. With Scarecrow involved, this goes to show that even characters that have been portrayed in a more silly fashion can still be presented in a creepy and intense way. Batman is about instilling fear in others it'll be a wonderful twist to see him have to cope with how fearful and dark evil can be. Hurwitz's story is creeping me out a little and that's just the way I want it.

Wow what a perfect issue. I think I may be in the minority here but based on his previous penguin mini and this issue I have to put this series right up there with batman and robin as my favorite batman title. Thats no slight to Batman, but I enjoy these two a tad bit more because the are more character and emotion driven, rather than being driven by plot twists.

You could apply the same nitpicky-ness to pretty much every fightscene involving Damian, G-Man :p

In all seriousness, this sounds interesting. Might give it a look.

I loved the way he wrote Batman. This is the obsessed cold Batman I want to see and I haven't seen it for a while. Love his Batman and for the first time in a long time, I think Scarecrow is creepy.

I honestly think we shouldn't think about little continuity details that much. When a writer makes a big mistake, it's okay to point it out, but other than that, I think we should just enjoy the different stories we're having.

Hopefully they do this for Detective as well. SERIOUSLY need a writer for what should be the premiere DC book, since it is what the company is named after...

@mosnterduc1000: DC has been pretty aggressive with fixing their publishing line since the relaunch. They have to be considering fixing Tec. It is now the weakest Batman comic (next to Batman Inc, but DC will let Morrison finish his run).

For how cold and driven Batman is in this issue, there's a very heartfelt moment between Bats and a little girl that melted my heart. This was a great start to Hurwitz's run.

Oh, man I also loved that moment. That moment couldn't have been done without good collaboration between Finch and Hurwitz. I think Hurwitz is a master at catching the right emotions.

While it might not be great reading-wise, it is one of the top sellers. I believe it is doing better than Batman and Robin. You'll have to convince everyone who reads it to stop reading it. And since only about 30% of the comic book internet community are comic book readers, I'd say it is damn near impossible.

@doordoor123: They pulled Jenkins off Batman TDK and it was in the top 10 sales wise, just like Tec. No good reason that they wouldn't be considering a change for Tec.

DC is so adamant about keeping their Bat titles alive. I wish they could've shown this much resolve when i came to their lesser-knowns (I hate the term 'B-listers'). Oh well.

What are you talking about? I think a lot of the B-list and even C-list books have great writers. Did you see DC before the relaunch? There are so much more great writers -- its ridiculous. And even the writers who were bad before the relaunch are proving themselves. JT Krul is an amazing job on Captain Atom, James Robinson is knocking everything out of the ballpark and Judd Winick is doing some crazy good stuff on Batwing and Catwoman.

I agree that there ARE bad writers, but for the most part, they are really good. -- Rob Liefeld... not so sure about.

While I agree with you to an extent (Batwing is great! Thank you Mr. Winick. Atom is cool as well), I must maintain my position. I am not talking about writers, I'm talking about characters. DC has already chopped ten books, including JLI, which was selling fairly well, despite horrible reviews. Why can they not do that to the bat characters? Or as a matter of fact, why can't they do that to books that have clones. There are two solo Batman Books, and from the looks of it, two Batman & Robin books. Now a talon of all characters is getting a book. Do you see what I mean? It is ridiculous. Almost one in four books belong to the bat family. How is that fair to other characters, or their fans? Now there's talk about a book featuring all the Robin characters, which in my opinion is a colossally stupid plan. Unless I see a Bat book bite the dust for that book (not Batwing though. That book is too good for all that.), I'm not going to be happy about this.

Geeky continuity question: Wasn't Scarecrow in the earlier issues of TDK? This seems like a completely new and creepier (hence better) Scarecrow than the one that appeared in issue #5, and therefore this felt like a reboot on Scarecrow. I realize from the review that this was the original intent for the series, and I think it would have been better if this was issue #1 rather than the playboy bunny villain we had before. Seems kind of confusing to have Scarecrow as a villain again so soon right after he was just used, is all I'm saying.

Also, I enjoyed the scene with Damian in the Batcave. Just when things were looking up for their relationship...

I agree with this to some extent. There are far too many Bat titles and continuity becomes an issue at times. I would rather, if I'm honest, Detective Comics be given a 40 Page count and TDK be cut, have both Daniels and Finch drawing two separate 20 pages stories with Hurwitz writing one (if not both.) and possibly another writer on the other. I'd pay the extra money for that and that frees up a slot for another non-bat related book.

Are you talking about the "war of the robins" thing going on? Cause the first issue of that was pretty awesome! I'm generally enjoying all the bat books right now and if a book is good I don't think its fair to say we should end one of them just because their are a lot.

And to talk about this issue. I thought Gordon was the shining character in this! Its always so emotional to see how much this city gets to Jim but he still keeps trying to fight the good fight. I'd argue he has lost as much, if not more!, than Batman at this point.

WOW. was right -this (unlike the last 9 isues) was really good. I loved the story but what really got me were the little in-between moment with the little girl, Damien, Bruce's GF. the homeless man and everything with Gordan. If they keep up like this and NEVER go back to the crap that was #1 - 9 - I will collect this series.
