Batman/Superman #5 - Game Over

4

Toymaster makes his debut in the New 52 and it looks like Batman is going to get thrown in the middle of a crazy real-life video game.

The Good

Back in the current continuity (sort of), we get a little more insight into the relationship between Batman and Superman. Greg Pak illustrates the difference between the two from the beginning. Bruce is all business while Clark tries poking a little fun at Batman. We also get to see that while Superman is capable of handling numerous threats, he can't be everywhere at the same time. It might be possible for Batman to take on one of his enemies. This idea is only touched upon but it's always interesting to see a hero take on someone else's enemy.

Seeing Hiro Okamura as the main threat, I'm reminded a little of the past story from SUPERMAN/BATMAN. The problem created here is an interesting one for Batman to deal with.

We have a change of pace in terms of the art. Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund handle the art duties with Andrew Dalhouse on colors. It's great seeing them deliver the visuals, especially with the comic telling the story in a horizontal format. That means you have to turn your comic sideways and we're able to get bigger panel to fully see all the details put in (more on this in a moment).

The Bad

It's not a huge concern but it's not clear when this story is meant to take place. With Nightwing's "appearance," we have to assume it's before FOREVER EVIL. Along with that, Bruce is not surprised to see Nightwing in Gotham when he's currently in Chicago. It's doesn't affect the story but the random, out of continuity stories is what turned me off of the original SUPERMAN/BATMAN series.

There are moments when the flow of the story is a little confusing. First Batman and Superman are doing their own thing. Later we see Bruce working out while Clark is having a chat with General Lane. It feels like the story is jumping around a little.

With the horizontal format, we do get to see more of the art but...with bigger and fewer panels, it feels like we're getting less story.

The Verdict

Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund join Greg Pak and bring Batman and Superman closer to the current continuity (compared to the first arc). Without having to go into detail, Pak shows us what makes them so different yet illustrates the friendship they've formed. We get an interesting change of pace in the story and having it in a horizontal format allows for the art to appear larger, thus giving us more detail to see. Although it also results in less panels overall. If you're looking for some old fashioned fun Superman/Batman story, this is shaping up to be another interesting story arc for the two.

I enjoyed this book for what it was. I think DC should use this book as a way of reintroducing new/old heroes if the reaction goes well give them their own title otherwise move on. It would hopefully mean they wont have to cancel as many books due to poor sales.

Between this and some of the recent podcasts @g_man is all about Nightwing continuity lately, haha. I'm not trying to make fun of you either. With Nightwing being in so many books for single appearances, shocking revelations about his character and a move to Chicago, I would have thought DC editors would make sure the writers are aware so they can tell stories around it. It's not the worst thing ever, but it is annoying enough to notice when your reading.

It's a lot of fun to read a good story that isn't all wrapped up in continuity and is just about telling a good story. Continuity just doesn't really matter that much to me...

Sad to see Jae Lee go... He was a truly great artist. I can't stand Brett Booth's art, all of the faces look the same.

Don't worry. Superman was just in a technological state of mind this issue. Things will be all better by the next.

Toymaster? I thought it was Toyman? Oh well hope they bring back the original as the super creepy, happily demonic Toyman we seen on Superman: The Animated Series.

If Nightwing is in Gotham, then he isn't currently in chicago.

Not all storylines in comics are taking place at the same point in time.

Having said that...this is among my favorite new series.

I would vote for Pak to replace Snyder to write Batman when he is finished his term.

the Zero Year tie in was ok but I have to see more....New 52 Superman is going to need a radical personality change to change my opinion on him

aside from the trolling part though( which I chuckled at), I though the issue had good characterization :)

I didn't....Superman sounded more like Superboy with him making jokes at Batman....Superman should be lighter in tone than Batman but he should be the kind of guy who when he does make a joke it should be a bad one where no one laughs....In my mind he should read a lot like Captain America

Good issue. Not sure about the sideways thing though, don't know what purpose it served.

I nearly died, laughing so hard while reading this issue.

Batman/Superman # 5, your name is trolling.

Clark trolling Bruce, Pak trolling Batgod, Pak trolling gamers (apparently for Mongul our gamers possess fierce warrior spirits), and most funny thing for me:

Bruce’s opinion about Clark – “Bratty youngster”,

Clark’s opinion about Bruce – “Old geezer”.

Best buddies till death, indeed.

Overall, good issue.

The sooner it does, the better, and we can get someone who doesn't regress the character and can write gripping stories.

Snyder is the Drew Goddard of comics.

I agree. The horizontal format is cool from an art standpoint, but I think it hurts the story. I'm probably the only one that was a little confused reading this. Maybe it's because I'm not a gamer. Maybe because it's just a weird story. But I didn't like it. I like Batman and Superman stories, but this team up book is just awkward to me... But the horizontal format was cool. And why get so wrapped up in continuity. Who cares WHEN it takes place. It apparently happened before Nightwing took off to Chicago. Why is that such a big deal?

I wasn't impressed with it either (although I did like Pak's AC issue). Almost hated Clark's childish attitude. Even in those 5-6 years ago stories he seemed more mature than now.

It was bad in comparison with the previous arc,...

Art = Brett Booth

Plot/Dialogues = let's introduce internet/gamers - something we already saw (what is this Avengers Arena?) - lifebars,... avatars,...

The only interesting panel was the one in which the Black Mercy plants get to Earth, and you only realize that when you get to the end of the book

That cover,... Ugh

Teen Titans level - I'll wait for the next arc

special mentions to:

Nightwing's ass - Superboy/Tim/Prime Toymaster - Twists! - Jimmy Olsen, rich kid

I thought the dialogue was OOC for both characters it ruined the issue from me. I hope this isn't an indication of things to come.

I can't stand this artwork in this issue, it's not that it's not good it's just compared to the first arch it doesn't hold up, it just looks so typical.

Yeah, when did Jimmy become rich? I'm a bit behind on some of the Supes books, but I don't remember this happening...
