Batman Incorporated #8 - Nightmares in Numberland

2

The final issue of Batman, Inc delivers a digital adventure featuring Batman and Barbara Gordon. With the series ending until sometime in 2012, there is some let down as the current story is not resolved yet we do get a little tease of what is to come.

Batman, Incorporated promised big things for the Batman universe and the final issue is here before DC's relaunch. Unfortunately this issue doesn't give a completely satisfying ending. With an issue full of digital drawings, we get a unique angle to the story that might not appeal to everyone.

The Good

Bruce Wayne is seen working up an angle for Batman, Incorporated. With his proposal for...Internet 3.0, we get to actually see Bruce in the board room (sort of) trying to sell his idea. The fact that the entire issue is based on a computer generated virtually reality allows for the use of the digital art.

At first I cringed at the idea of the digital drawings. As the story progressed, I started warming up to it. It is an interesting change but a complete contrast to last issue's art by Chris Burnham.

There is a nice tease towards the end that is going to make the wait for the series' relaunch in 2012 feel even further away. Actually, it's more than a nice tease. It really makes up for the downfalls of this issue even though it was such a simple tease.

The Bad

At the beginning, it was difficult to determine who some of the characters were supposed to be. I thought the very first character was Damian but it turned out to be someone else. It's hard to come to a clear opinion on the art. It makes sense for the story but is such a harsh change from what we've been seeing. I can only imagine how this will read in a collected format.

As the final issue of the series, it is a bit of a let down. The story of Batman and Batman, Incorporated are clearly not over but this story has nothing to with the previous issues. The entire premise gave the feeling of being a filler issue which is disappointing given that it's Grant Morrison. Will there be any mention of Leviathan and Batman, Incorporated in the other Batman issues since Grant will be working on Action Comics during DC's relaunch?

The Verdict

This is the most bizarre Batman, Incorporated issue we've had. A strange adventure set in a virtual world is highlighted by the use of digital drawings. The art takes some getting used to as it works in some parts but looks strange in other areas. Being the final issue of Batman, Incorporated until 2012's relaunch, it's disappointing that we don't have a more solid story. There were some interesting elements but it ended up feeling like more of a filler issue rather than the end of a chapter. There is one significant tease that should make you perk up and long for more of Grant on Batman. We'll just have to wait to see where any of the plots set up are dealt with. I expected more and it's unfortunate that this is how this volume ends.

Definitely the most bizarre issue of Inc. I can honestly say this is the weakest issue of the entire run. I couldn't get past the digital art and who who's of characters. There were some interesting info at the end that builds up from Morrison's entire run but it wasn't much. Other than that this issue can be forgettable.

For people wondering about issue 9 & 10 Inc. They are combining those issues into a one-shot called Batman Inc, Leviathan strikes. Scheduled release date b4 the Inc relaunch in 2012 but no confirmed date.

I just read this issue!! I gasped on the page that re-introduces a certain someone back from limbo, I guess you could say. I've never gasped that loudly before.

Leviathan actually *is* mentioned near the end, by the "final boss". I believe he recites their mantra about how "wherever the standard of the bat rises, it will be torn down" that's been mentioned in a couple other issues by Leviathan members iirc. But yes, I do agree that this issue was a bit strange to end the series on. :/ Oh well, I still enjoyed it for what it was.

I really couldn't stand the art in this issue, It looked too much like early 90's CG and I found it hard to understand what was going on.

I wouldn't say it had NOTHING to do with the previous issues. Internet 3.0 was teased back in Batman: The Return, mentioned again in an issue of Batgirl, and Oracle's Internet 3.0 avatar was on the cover of #6. It's just another piece of the Batman Inc. puzzle. Grant Morrison's pretty much always like that anyways. Not to mention the TRUE final issue was supposed to be #10, but I have no idea what exactly screwed #9 and #10 over into their delays.

@The Mighty Monarch: You can probably blame Morrison for that. All his books he writes gets delayed.

Never again will I pick up a Grant Morrison book... he succeeded in alienating me as a fan; I can now frankly say I abhor his nonsensical writing.  Oh well, I'll go read the good Batman by Snyder- that guy knows what he's doing, whether it's Dick or Bruce.

@CombatSpoon86: Batman and Robin was going fine until the last 4 issues he wrote. But to be fair, that was the first Morrison title I was following as it was ongoing, so I have little experience with Morrison. But considering how far in advance he seems to have these stories planned out, why is he the one causing them to take so long?

Yeah that was the best part, but sadly it was the only good part if you ask me.I feel he's trying to drag his story,2 years worth of stories alongside horrible delays is not a good thing.

I did not care for this issue either. The art was weak and the story was convoluted and uninspiring. I think Morrison has a tendency to become overly conceptual at times, and this is a prime example of when it just doesn't work. I thoroughly enjoyed his run on Batman and Robin and I am looking forward to his take on Action Comics, but this issue was a huge disappointment.

I was suprised that this didnt suck worse. I'm not saying I liked it, but after all the crap I read about it I found it to be at least readable.

Ok, I'm not the biggest Grant Morrison fan but I have to say, I kinda enjoyed this issue. Yes, the digital art is jarring at first but I dug it after a while.

I think battles in cyberspace are for Oracle, not for Batman.
