Batman and Robin #12 - Terminus Last Gasp

4

A bunch of former 'victims' of Batman's fight against crime want revenge. Get ready for a gigantic battle including all the former Robins as well.

The Good

It could seem easy to write good stories with the popular and great villains. What do you do with lesser known ones or ones that are completely far from being considered 'cool'? This is what we've been seeing from Peter Tomasi in this current Terminus arc. Tomasi has taken a bunch of low level hoods that suffered defeat from Batman and have banded together to bring him and Gotham down. Sounds corny but when you have a determined and unbalanced group of villains, you should never completely underestimate them.

To up the ante on this fight, we still have the continuing subplot and appearance of all the former Robins. That means besides Damian, we also have Nightwing, Red Robin and Red Hood. Seeing them all fighting together in a story that isn't a giant crossover seems a little wrong but it is a cool sight to see them all going after the horde of villains.

As if that didn't make the fight crazy enough, we also see Batman give himself a little upgrade during the battle. Again, not something you'd normally expect to see. Based on his battle during Night of the Owls, it makes sense that he would be prepared. Also, this is Batman we're talking about.

Patrick Gleason has his hands full in this issue. There's so much going on and he delivers with showcasing all the over the top action. I always marvel when an artist has to draw a large number of characters in an issue that normally doesn't contain so many. There is a lot going on here and Gleason is ready to take it all on.

The Bad

As crazy and fun as this issue was, it did feel a little off. The action seemed to get a little out of hand. I enjoy seeing the Robins together with their banter and insults but we didn't even really see them gather like this during Night of the Owls. Jason Todd is the wild card here. We've been seeing that he does still have issues with Batman but doesn't want to fight him as we've seen in the past. It's hard to picture him playing nicely with the others, even though deep down he still has the makings of being a hero.

The villain's game plan and 'speech' felt like it was too over the top as well. Revenge is a strong motivator but the lengths he'll go to needs to be seen.

(A minor note, is this just another nail in the coffin that Stephanie Brown was never a Robin?)

The Verdict

Instead of BATMAN AND ROBIN, this should have ROBINS in the title as we get to see all the Robins together fighting with Batman. There is plenty of crazy action that we don't normally see in the average Batman comic. So much is going on here and Patrick Gleason captures every over the top action scene with ease. It almost feels as if there's too much going on, including the upgrade Batman gives himself but in terms of fun and enjoyment, this issue delivers. The events and outcome here may be a little extreme, even for a Batman comic but I can't deny how much fun reading this was to read.

I'm glad this arc is over. It wasn't the strongest follow up to the to the first story, which I thought was great. I kinda wish this was just Robin instead of Batman & Robin.

A very average story arc. Villain just came and went without leaving any type of mark. The plot was forgettable and the conclusion was downright ridiculous. If next issue doesn't serve up a treat, I'm abandoning ship.

All the Robins (especially Red Hood) just showing up felt wrong. Some of the dialogue also.

Really disappointed by this issue :(

The last one was great. I've said it before and I'll say it again the Terminus stuff could have been another arc entirely and The War Of The Robins should have been an arc all to itself. :(

Also this

Tim and Dick I could believe but Jason was an awful stretch...

@feargalr: Ya Nightwing was ok. Tim was a stretch but I could roll with it but Jason was a leap to far.

Wow, this issue was a huge disappointment. I thought the setup for Terminus was pretty good. To have the finale end with such a mess of stupidly sugary fan service- was almost embarrassing to read. I love the Robins. I love this title, but this was an awful issue. It deserves better. So much build up was also given to Damien trying to beat the other Robins and it just ends with Dick giving him a staff and telling him not to try so hard? Lame!

You're being way too nice to this issue. BTW- I still care about the Steph. :-) She doesn't have to be a Robin tho... I'll be happy if she still exists just as Spoiler.

I have one question. In the last issue Damian told the pre-Robins that he was going to come for them one at a time to prove he's the best. Dick mentions to them that Jason, and Tim said he already did. When did this happen? Did I miss something??

i actually thought this was terrible. i don't know if it was rushed or what, but almost all of batman's dialogue felt ridiculous to me. the only ones who actually sounded right were dick and damian.

This issue felt way too rushed, were they just trying to conclude the arc before zero month and then snyder's death of the family?

Batman and Robin 10 - Damian made his point to Tim who always criticizes Damians brutal nature that he doesn't get to criticize him for that because Tim killed in the Culling back in Teen Titans out of rage. The key aspect of that was Tim was in the belief that he was a better person than Damian and when Damian did his little presentation he considered it a win.

Batman and Robin 11 - Damian sneaks into one of Jason's safe houses and combats him whilst reminding Jason of his failures as a Robin and beating him.

Nightwing 11 - Damian pays Nightwing a visit reminding him of the promise he made to outdo all the past Robins but out of respect does not make an attempt to fight because Dick is distracted.

Batman and Robin 12 - Nightwing gives Damian a souvenir and points out that he does not need to prove to anyone who he is and acknowledges him as Robin.

Im REALLY glad Stephanie Brown was never a Robin now. She was not only a horrible Robin but barely anybody even really considered her a Robin, and the only notable things she did as Robin was start a massive gang war that got a ton of people killed, and die.

I really liked that shot of all the Robins looking up, but I do agree that having Jason there was bit of a stretch, but it wasn't done in a terrible way

Oh and one other thing. I dont think Jason being there was THAT much of a stretch. Maybe before the New 52 but the Jason we have now is much more cooperative and less messed up in the head than he previously was which is great in my opinion. Hes the prodigal son of the Bat family but deep down he obviously still cares for them at least enough that he is willing to give a hand to them in a pinch.

I should probably start reading The New 52 stuff. Unfortunately, I am kind of strapped on cash, so my purchasing has slowed down exponentially.

I wanted to like the big Robin Reunion, but how corny all of the dialogue was just killed this issue for me. A one liner here and there is fine, but it seemed like 80% of this was one liners. The moment between Damien and Dick at the end was nice, but it continues to feel jarring how much of a brat Damien is in this series after the relationship he and Dick developed pre-new 52.
