Batman #9 - The Night of the Owls; The Fall of the House of Wayne, Part 1 of 3

5

Not only has Batman been beaten and barely escaped with his life, now his home has been invaded and many Gotham citizens have been targeted. Snyder is making it clear that it's not easy being Batman.

The never-ending roller coaster ride continues with shocks, action and revelations.

The Good

Each month I praise this title and profess how this is all the Batman I need. There are other good Batman stories but the action here just doesn't let up. Last issue we left off with the Talons attacking Wayne Manor and Bruce Wayne fighting for his life. In the midst of picking up where last issue left off, Scott Snyder begins with another little history lesson such as we've seen before. It's little details and factoids like this that shows how much thought Snyder puts into the story and essence of Batman and his world.

In order to take on an army of Talons, we saw (and see on the cover) that Batman has bulked up his appearance a little. He's not one to normally rely on other means to fight his battles but it's great knowing he's clearly prepared for the eventuality. That isn't to say that Batman will clearly win the day here. By now, we should all know Snyder will not make things easy for Batman.

Capullo's art is top notch as usual. This isn't the typical Batman-type battle. He's had to pull out some big guns (not literal ones) and is fighting in a way he doesn't normally. With all the variations in scenes and environments, we're treated to a wide range of adventure for Batman and seeing Capullo draw it all out is always an added treat. We may only be nine issues in but it feels like Capullo and Snyder have been working together for quite some time.

There will be moments you cheer and others that just might shock you. This title is what Batman is all about.

And of course, just when you think it's over, you're lovingly slapped across the face with the back-up story by Snyder and James Tynion IV with art by Rafael Albuquerque. I would pay separately to get this story. What could possibly be so exciting about a back-up story? It's a flashback story from "years ago." But the shocker is it deals with Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred's father. I won't say any more but it's a story that needs to be read. There's almost a bigger cliffhanger in the back-up story than there is in the main story.

The Bad

Nothing. I loved this issue and had a blast reading it.

The Verdict

The story continues as does the brilliance of Snyder and Capullo along with Tynion IV and Albuquerque in the back-up. Night of the Owls roars to life and we're seeing Batman fighting for his life in a way he hasn't had to before. Somehow Snyder has kept the pacing and action cranked up for the past nine issues. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Capullo is a beast when it comes to giving life to Snyder's script. As the main part of the Night of the Owls, there's a lot to see here and the back-up adds even more to an already great issue. If I was only allowed one comic to read each month, it would definitely be BATMAN.

Saw the preview on CBR and I almost wet my pants. Batman smack-talking whilst bashing assassins in a big robotic suit. THIS is what I want from a Batman comic. Batman proving that HE IS THE NIGHT!

This is a case where I would love to see a crazy variant Batman action figure in this suit. Way better than Arctic Glider Batman or whatever the toy companies come up with.

I really enjoy Snyder's return to Batman's aggressive-keep pushing mentality. With the back-up story's importance aside, I really wish this was a full issue. Either way, this title continues to deliver.

What more can be said for Snyder's Batman. It is consistently good. So lets talk backup feature. I'm a total sucker for any pre-Batman Gotham tale. Lump in Rafael Albuquerque on art and ya' got yourself a title worth the $3.99.

Continues to be the most overrated comic of the reboot for me, still good though.

What Snyder has been doing in this title (only read issues 1 to 7) is the best stuff currently in DC being published (that and Demon Knights, Swamp Thing and Action Comics) and probably the best Batman book I've ever read - the whole concept behind the Court of Owls is amazing and worth praising! Great job!!

It is a full issue. 22 Pages plus a 10 page back up?

i actually think this issue is a little over rated. after months of lead up this issue is basically filler to for the true climax in issue 10...i mean nothing happened...he beat up a group of talons and got in his car...is this what dc`s been advertising for months? i love the series...absolutely but i think earlier issues were done better....even the art work seemed a little more rough and rushed than normal

I'm sorry but I cant take these reviews seriously anymore.

First of all what exactly did this issue accomplish? that's right absolutely nothing, it was filler plain and simple.I still dont know what exactly the Court wants or what makes them tick.Snyder as done absolutely nothing to develop these characters,it's clear that they only exist to get their asses kicked by Batman.

Secondly why exactly does Snyder keep beating you in the head with these owl themes,?

"Owls eat bats, owls invaded Wayne manor to overcome the bat infestation,an owl ate the bat which inspired Bruce."Is Batman's life being governed by some crazy owl god or something?

Seriously WTF is this? owls, owls OOOOOOOOOWWLS

It is hard to decide which is better Snyder's work on Swamp Thing or his work on Batman. Both series have been amazing.

I am temped to go with Batman, but it probably just seems better compared to years of Morrison's pathetic work on the series.

PS People really want to see development of the Talons? How do you develop characters if they are zombies? If you want character development of the undead, then read I, Vampire.

this issue didn't do much for me, felt Batgirl this week did a better job of making the night of owls feel like a real threat.

@G-Man: Yeah, but that would require the toy companies actually going out of their way to build another mold instead of simply cannibalizing the same one over and over and over again with simply a new paint job and accessories, trying to convince us that Batman flying in essentially the same suit but in a different color in the Arctic makes an awesome action figure.

Great issue. I think they're breaking away from the Cult influence and making something that's feels very new. Although I found the armor to actually be a little weak; how were they breaking into it, even if they have minorly enhanced strength?

Really nice second story as well.

That quote was such an epic way to end this issue. I agree, the tie-in with Batgirl as well as Batman and Robin were exceptionally well done. I don't read Detective Comics so I can't comment on that.

As usual I loved the owls and bats back story & metaphors. "They used owls to kill the bats...and when the bats came back it was with a vengeance"

@entropy_aegis: I think he's "hinting" at the pervasiveness of the Court in Gotham City which is something we know full-well at this point.
