Batman #5 - Face the Court, Part Two

5

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have delivered more than just another great issue of Batman. This one is an experience. It's a Batman story unlike any you've read before.

You think you know what Batman stories are all about? You think you know what Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are capable of? Get ready for a completely different Batman experience.

The Good

How many times have we heard how great Scott Snyder's BATMAN is? Even with the thousands of Batman stories over the years, it's easy to say with certainty that Snyder is one of the greatest Batman writers we've seen. Snyder and Capullo have hit the ground running since the "New 52" brought some slight changes to the DC Universe. Somehow, the two manage to make each issue of Batman better than the previous. With BATMAN#5, you have to be prepared to be blown away.

It might sound like a lot of hype. Snyder has been doing the unthinkable. We are seeing Batman completely thrown off guard. This is the hero that is supposed to have a contingency plan for everything. It turns out he wasn't quite prepared for his current situation. He is still surviving. Other heroes would have been broken completely in half the time that has gone by between this and the last issue.

Batman is facing an opponent unlike any he's faced before. Bane may have "broken the bat" but that hardly compares to what is going on here. The way Capullo lays out the story here is a trip. Let it be known that you won't be reading this in a traditional fashion. To mimic what must be going on, you'll find yourself getting a little more active as you follow through the story. This was completely intentional and it was a brilliant move.

The Bad

Is this the best issue of Batman ever? Can Snyder and Capullo top this one next month?

The Verdict

It's not often I find myself re-reading a comic book more than three times before even writing a review. Even the best issues rarely get a second read immediately. This is an issue of BATMAN you won't soon forget. Snyder and Capullo are putting Batman through the ringer and you almost get the impression that they despise the character (which they don't). The first time I read this, I had a heavy feeling in my chest. It was a feeling where I had to let out my breath and say "whoah..." It's an added treat that the issue is laid out in an unconventional manner.

There are moments in the comic that are almost disturbing. Not in a grotesque way but just the sinking feeling you get. Snyder and Capullo deserve as much praise for this issue as possible. I've read it a few times already and I know I will be reading it many more times before the next issue arrives. This is what great comic books should aspire to. I can easily say without having read the rest of this week's comics that this will be the best of the week. I'd even be willing to say that this has a damn good chance of being my favorite issue of the year. Reading Snyder and Capullo's BATMAN is like being on the best roller coaster in the world and not wanting to get off. Each issue is better than the last. How they will top this is going to be so incredibly great to see.

OMFG I NEED THIS NOW.

Every freaking single issue has been better than the one before it, and they've all been class acts.

Not a huge Batman fan (or DC for that matter), but this book has been awesome. I bought all the new Batman books starting with the New 52. This and Batwoman being the only ones I'm keeping.

It's a Batman story unlike any you have read before.

So much for the people who are comparing this to Brotherhood of the Fist (seriously?) and/or stating that it is a rehashed Morrison story.

Thankfully Snyder is the new lead scribe of the Batman comics.

It is,except the Black Glove and the Monkey Fist were cooler but that's a different debate.

I'll be getting this shortly, but somehow I doubt it's unlike any Batman story I've ever read.

And I fail to understand what's so special about outsmarting Batman, luring him in to a trap and almost killing him after wearing him down physically and mentally. That happens in like... oh wait it happens in EVERY Batman story, even housewives have done it(ahem Gilda and Loring).

Plus I don't see how being stuck in a maze for a week compares to getting his back snapped after weeks of constant fighting, illness and fear toxin.Real people have survived in such circumstances so I doubt heroes would have been brokendown, and best issue of Batman ever? C'MON.

Snyder is undoubtedly one of the greatest Batman writers of our generation, but no one should forget that Capullo's art and the panel layouts in the issue are what really takes the reader on such a chilling, trippy journey. Unbelievably fantastic.

It's a good issue but as I live in the north of England and there's nowhere to get comics from, comixology don't have any kind of easy page flipping thing.

So I would have enjoyed it more of my frustration with doing my neck in hadn't have broken the mood...

I GOT SO LOST IN THE BOOK! IT WAS BRILLIANT!

btw if you're not enjoying the story you might need to reread it all together. Before I reread it I just thought it was alright but all together the whole thing is great. AND this is only the beginning. There is still another 7 issues or so of the Court of Owls.

This issue was so amazing I read it twice in a row. I NEVER do that

@jsphsmth: @entropy_aegis: However, entroy_aegis is right. In a review I wrote for Player Affinity (which isn't up until Friday) I came to the conclusion that it's pretty much inevitable to compare it to The Black Glove. It's a conspiracy that goes all the way back. (Like The Black Glove/The Return of Batman) Batman is driven crazy (Like The Black Glove) Still, my conclusion in that review is that while Snyder may be doing something similar, he's totally also doing it in a way that is totally his. It's a little hard to properly describe, but boils to the fact that - there are no original stories. Half of the stories you read come from Biblical/Greek Mythology times and the rest from Shakesperian Times. What makes a good story is when you can take the old and make it your own.

Just got done reading and that was SWEET!!!!!!!! I read it digitally and so the pages rotating throughout the book was difficult to read but I understood what Batman was going through just from that alone. Either way an amazing read and I CAN NOT WAIT for issue 6.

Read it,not only was it not the best of issue of Batman ever(that honor still belongs to Batman#681,it was actually the weakest issue of Snyders run itself.

Snyder is trying too hard to make the Court look like they mean something and in the process he's making Bruce look like an overconfident idiot.

The art was gorgeous, but the writing is quite clearly Knightfall meets RIP except I don't think writers tried that hard to make us take Bane or Dr Hurt seriously and cause both Knightfall and RIP were game changers in the Bat status quo which this won't be.

I have a problem with the fact that Batman was already so broken down at the start of the issue. I would have liked it better if they built up to it but I guess they couldn't fit all of it in the one issue.

I kind of agree with you actually. I've liked this series a lot, and I enjoyed all the page-turning experimentation, but I wanted to see this issue progress from sanity to insanity, rather than just start in the middle, which made it a little too consistent in tone. And really the whole thing is very reminiscent of the Cult storyline--insanity, old Gotham history, being in the sewers, being drugged. I liked the camera/hall of pictures though.

Greg Capullo is shutting up any of his doubters!!! This is the first time in my life I had to rotate a comic book 360 degree's and then have a page read like a japanese comic from right to left. NUTS!!!
