Batgirl: Futures End #1 - Darker in the Soul

5

The future for Batgirl may or may not be what you thought it would.

The Good

I'll start off by saying that I haven't fully dived into FUTURES END. Last week's first round of special issues didn't really grab me either. BATGIRL FUTURES END is something different. While not necessarily tied directly to the events in the weekly FUTURES END series, Gail Simone gets the opportunity to delve into Barbara Gordon's future and evolves the character in a fascinating way. We also get to see the idea of the legacy of Batgirl.

Batgirl holds a special place for a lot of people. The wonderful thing about Simone's final issue is there is something for everyone. Simone does a stellar job showing us this potential future for Barbara as well as an incredible transformation of her character. You'll feel the pain of certain events as well as the joy in seeing what else the future holds. If you know me, you know which part made me especially happy.

It's almost shocking what Simone is able to do in the "five years from now" time period. I had some high expectations but didn't want to get my hopes up. Simone's take on the future was incredible and even surprising, in a good way. With some of the other FUTURES END stories, the futures feel pretty bleak. While there is a dark tone going on, we're also filled with a great deal of hope. This is the sort of what if/future stories I want to see.

Javier Garron does a fine job with the different time periods. With this taking place in the future, we get to see some new characters and designs along with slightly older versions of familiar characters. The "future" Batgirls are great. I'd love a miniseries showcasing them to continue their story. We get plenty of cool action and nice twists that make this an issue you won't want to miss.

The Bad

Even though we get what we want and see things we've been waiting to see, it's still just a possible future story. We know there's no way everything we're seeing in these FUTURES END stories can stick (unless the entire New 52 timeline decides to permanently jump forwards five years). It's a great story and gives us hope but the things that happen can easily be put on a shelf and never referred to again.

The Verdict

While not being fully on board with the notion of the FUTURES END stories, this is one that caught me by surprise. Gail Simone knows and cares about the Barbara Gordon character. She ends her run on the series but showing us a possible future and puts her through the wringer. Usually future stories are full of despair but Simone's take on Batgirl and her legacy offers some hope. Along with Javier Garron's art, we get some cool designs and you can't help but want to see more of this corner of the "five years from now" timeline. The events of this story may never come to be but you'll definitely want to see what Gail Simone has given us. You'll definitely want to thank her the next time you see her at a convention.

This would struggle to get 3/5 from me,apparently it's become fashionable to have Bane job to the Batfamily women to show off their badassery. Moving past that I couldn't connect with Barbara on any level, why does she want to be Bane? why did she choose HIM of all people? and reading Bane call Babs daughter made me cringe, the twist in the end was completely stupid. I loved the Bane/Scandal relationship but Simone really has become a one trick pony. Azz did the same thing 100 times better in Wonder Woman #0. Some fan service cameos aren't gonna elevate this comic in my eyes.

I know that DC hasn't exactly said that Future's End is not the future but a "possible" future, but I do feel they are using it as a launching or relaunching pad for certain characters. For example in this book we get both Cass and Steph as Batgirl(s). Also at the beginning of this book, as we saw in the preview, it seems that Babs knows that Grayson isn't dead anymore so there seems to be a bit contradiction going on as well.

Looks like I just added 4.00 more bucks to my comic trip today. :D If that is who I think it is in the Batgirl outfits, for sure this is getting picked up.

@burningzerox: We can only hope this is planting the seeds for things to come. Or it could just be a way to get us to shut up about certain characters we're waiting to see. At least we can be a little more hopeful now.

Wont help, because now people will continue to demand more regular appearances.

It's great to see Cassandra cain in a bat girl suit again. I sure hope the new bat girl writer includes Cassandra with Barbara ' s story line. What I would like to see is a climatic conclusion to the cain family tragedy. In fact if David cain and lady shiva kill each other off than maybe Cassandra can adopt her mom's persona as a benevolent lady shiva. It would be step up for her versus calling yourself black bat

Happy that both Cass and Steph appeared in this issue. Not sure how I feel about "Beast". Seems like a silly idea

Rofl, Babs-the-girl-with-alot-of-muscles-and-no-venom, stomped Bane!

I'm not sure, of how i feel about that, but i loved the issue, Cass was more than Ok for me, plus, what Babs told her:

" Cassandra, you came through hell and made everyone you met stronger and better. You are the person i most want to be. "

TOP issue, nuff said.

Batgirl defeating Bane, the man who broke Batman`s back and one of his few physical equals is just one of the stupidest things I have ever read. So is Barbara`s bestial body without any steroid or enhancement. Ridiculous. There. I said it

@justthatkid: Sorry, but its just not plausible. The same way batman can`t defeat Superman without strategy and gauntlets, Batgirl cannot beat the behemoth that is Bane on venom. It can`t happen. She would get squashed. And that gigantic body without any pshysical complement is Implausible also. She just goes on beating him, and in just two blows. Laughable. Just fun service to be found here.

@justthatkid: @justthatkid:

Just an example. To illustrate the great physical differences between the two characters. If you dont like that one, try I dunno...Tim Drake vs Steve Rogers? And no ammount of tragedy can account for physical impossibilites. It would be like Batman learning to fly out of sheer will. C`mon, you know is just fun service. (also, the fight does´t show any kind of strategy or learning, just two hits and bane is down)

@justthatkid: So? Doesn`t matter what she says. She could say she has laser eyes and it would still couldn`t explain her body or how she beats him in two miserable blows. Sorry but I just found it really stupid. No matter. I don`t think we see the same thing here.

Oh, and Batman is a man of 1.90 mts, not a woman of 1,70, 1, 75 mts. bane is above 2 mts tall. Please dude, c`mon

@asbat maybe she's on steroids and not the venom. She never said she was natty. Just not on the venom iirc. I agree with you otherwise.
