Avengers Vs. X-Men: Infinite #6 - Round 6: ...In a Handful of Dust

5

Marvel releases another 'Infinite' comics to give us a closer look into Cylcops' thinking and how he's dealing with his new powers.

The Marvel Infinite comics show us how digital comics can be a different way to read comics.

The Good

As with the previous 'Infinite' comic featuring a member of the Nova Corps racing to Earth to deliver the warning of the coming of the Phoenix Force, this one really utilizes the digital format. In a surprising fashion, despite the first few issues having a feeling of being a little lacking on action (aside from random fight after fight), there hasn't felt like there's really been room to delve into the individual thinking of characters. In particular, we haven't really seen how Cyclops is handling all of this.

Cyclops has always been driven and pretty much obsessed with leading the X-Men and doing what he believes is the right thing. Since M-Day, his entire race's survival has been called into question. He's done everything he can to ensure they can continue to survive despite the incredible odds stacked against them. The coming of the Phoenix Force and the fact that Hope seems to be the ideal candidate for its host must be putting his mind into overdrive in figuring out what he needs to do. Hope was under the care of his son, Cable and the Phoenix Force was a strong presence in Jean Grey's life. The Phoenix Force may have saved Jean at one point but there's no denying the destruction it caused as well. Scott now claims it's the only hope for the continued survival of mutants.

This is a topic we don't really get to see a focus on in the main AvX series or any of the tie ins. Yet in this Infinite comic, we do get to see this touched on as Cyclops takes the center stage. In needing to get away in order to get some peace and quiet in his mind (for obvious reasons now that he has a portion of the Phoenix Force within), Cyclops finds himself on the area of the moon where Jean and the Phoenix Force had their greatest battle. Seeing these old familiar surroundings is eerie as well as exciting. In some ways it does feel like sacred territory and shouldn't be used in a comic because it would be exploiting the events. But it's a great part of this comic. Cyclops has felt way too arrogant and extreme. He even refers to himself as "Cyclops the First." Seeing him work through the current events is something that needs to be seen and works to move the story along without Cyclops seeming like a crackpot.

The format of the Infinite comic also helps to make this story shine. When I first saw the preview pages for this, I wasn't too impressed. But with the 'guided view' technology, the pages flow and you find yourself getting sucked in and moving throughout the story at a faster pace. Some of the panels use a lot of the same art with a slight change to the next 'scene.' For example, Cyclops would be floating, contemplating the situation and in mid thought, the next swipe would contain the same art except for his head looking in a different direction. There was also a scene where a certain person was listening and the next swipe uses the same close up shot with the only change being their eye shutting. This subtle change may look cheap to some, in that it's using the majority of the same art, but I see it as capturing more of the feeling of those involved. It may sound corny but it does give a little more life to the comic. It's not animated by any means but it makes the story flow in a completely different manner. If this was simply in printed form, there would be a lot of the essence and feeling of the story sacrificed.

The Bad

The story in this issue really shines in this Infinite format. I don't even want to think what it'd be like in a regular format. It is important in giving us a look into Cyclops thinking, something that has been lacking throughout this series.

The Verdict

I love this format. This isn't necessarily something I'd want to see used in every comic as it could get to be too much but it's great seeing it here. I've felt the AVENGERS VS X-MEN series has had its ups and downs but this is more of the type of story I want to see. There is something fun about seeing our favorite heroes fight each other to answer the often asked questions, "Who would win in a fight between ___ and ___?" Comic books aren't just about big action. We haven't even had a lot of 'big action' in this series as the big battles have been shown in the pages of AvX: VS. This is more about the characterization of Cyclops and what he's going through with the power of the Phoenix Force along with being reminded of what happened to Jean Grey. I would love to see more of these Infinite comics from time to time provided they continue to have the same quality and there is a need to tell the story in a splashier way. It's a fun and different way to see a story that would feel a little flat if told in the traditional manner of a printed comic.

I dare you to hate this. This was just what this crossover needed, a great issue. This was so damned cool. The art was great. The characterization was great. And the Avengers wound up looking like complete d-bags. Awesome.

I actually liked this more than AvX 6(which I thought was an improvement) or the tie-ins. Felt it really added to the duality of Cyclops in his current state.

Once you being referring as yourself blank the First, especially if you don't have anyone to follow in your footsteps, you official crossed into crackpot territory.

Great review and I am really glad Marvel is embarrassing the digital medium.

I liked this issue, and I think it might help Scott keeping the Phoenix in him in control. But there will be someone going rogue at the end, I don't expect Colossus and Illyana who are used to deal with superior (and evil) powers (and they're Russians! In soviet Russia host controls you!), but as it was said in the issue, the Phoenix exagerates your emotions and Emma and Namor are known are known to have done some rogue things before. If not for the covers of future issues I would say Namor, but probably it will be both, him and Emma, going rogue and dark phoenix. That said, I would like to see the 5 hosts surviving the event, I love the Scott and Emma couple a lot, and I can't have 2 of my fav characters killed!! (Scott, Emma and Nightcrawler who is already dead).

PS: An issue like this one wouldn't be doable on paper as it would occupy like 60+ pages with all the panel reuse.

It's interesting to say the least, all I'm saying is where see where it leads, cause it looks like it only adds to the whole P5 fighting amongst themselves theory, (Emma, Namor, Scott)

Edit: Where see where this leads/go

The Avengers damn sure looked like some d-bags and they need to start learnin to mind their own business. Colossus saved a few of the Avengers from near death and this is how they repay them by still trying to attack the X-Men and steal Hope. get real! You need to get like Beast and come to your senses. Also Cyclops and Emma could have easily killed the avengers that attacked them. So I cant wait for issue 7 so the avengers finally get what they deserve! Cause Scotts right they WONT stop,

P.S. How can you call Cyclops a "crazy god complex"? He and the other X-Men have not done anything wrong they are bringing balance to the earth aiding people that have hated them their entire lives and not asking for anything in return besides no more war which is a great thing. but apparently your earths mightiest "heroes" are looking to start a war with the X-Men.

One of the defining qualities of the christian god is that he allows flaws to exist in the world as it is preferable to one without freewill. This is something they are stripping the people of earth from. It is quite obviously a god complex. You should really read the Secret Avengers issue as it provides insight into just what the pheonix does to a person's mind.

Yes coming into the United Nations and all but announcing that they're taking over and they're deciding who is evil and what is right and wrong isn't a god complex. Please. The Avengers see it for what it is! Cyclops and the other phoenix force guys are going crazy with power. Slowly but you can see it coming. The way Cyclops held out to Hope the phoenix force then took it away. How he went from calling her the Messiah to now saying she doesn't deserve the power cause she wouldn't know what to do with it. Thats ridiculous.

Also who's to say if Cyclops and Emma WEREN'T going to kill the Avengers. Scott seemed pretty into it till a certain someone interrupted. I'm trying not to give spoilers and i don't know how to put the spoiler tag.

Scott and the others are heroes. They now have nearly unlimited power. They are ending war and feeding the hungry. They are making the world a better place for everyone. Cap, Tony, and the rest of the Avengers just don't want to admit they wee wrong. They're going to be the ones that push the P5 into crazy destroy everything mode. The Avengers have consistently been the aggressors here.

I feel so bad for Scott here. Since I doubt he "recreated Jean" it was more of a brief form of her from his memories, meaning he was trying to use her as a medium to buffer the fact that he was trying to talk himself down. That is some heavy stuff, and it is portrayed wonderfully here. And the art, with those colors, HOLY MOLEY. So vivid. So crisp.

This was better than all of the AvX series so far.

Some of the panels are changed slightly (like adding a head turn or expanding on a blocked out narrowed view to a wide shot which reveals more of the scene while being overlaid on very similar if not identical, art.

Yeah, Cyclops is only seeing things from his narrow perspective. Like he always has. The Avengers have seen what humanity is capable of with technology, or power, that they do not deserve. In fact, Stark turned down using the Infinity Gauntlet to instantly create a better world, because we would not become a better humanity. We NEED to make mistakes. Living in a perfect Utopia makes us devolve as a species. It makes rely on forces that are not within our own spirit.

I really do feel bad for Cyclops, and I can understand why he's doing the things he's doing, but it will not end well.

Wait...why is Cyclops dressed as Nightwing? Seriously though, someone really needs to take Scott out, hes a danger to mutants and humans alike, have a look at X Force and what happend to Wolverine in the AOA dimension if you want to see what happens when someone gets that much power.

I agree with you. That is not to say that I wasn't enjoying the main series itself but truth be told as I began reading the main book chapter six I felt weary of the entire storyline and sort of done with it. In terms of too many writers wanting to get their piece into the story.

This infinite version told by Mark Waid was superb and one of my favorite moments of this event so far, next to Wanda showing up and taking Hope with her, and has come in time to keep me interested enough to give this event a chance.

I wish that they would cut out some writers thou...

Cyclops...

Pros: hes making the world a better place with his powers as any superhero would do

Cons: by outlawing war & telling people what they can & cannot do hes essentially taking over the world slowly

Cap:

Pros: he wants to do whats best for humanity & sees the impending danger of 5 Omnipotent PP avatars

Cons: He keeps pushing the x men too far.. the x men have technically done nothing wrong but because they MIGHT do something wrong & his ''adviser'' wolverine (who already has personal issues with cyke) keeps telling him its gonna end badly.. he attacks keeps attacking them & pushing them farther & farther until.. ''no more avengers''

Sounds like a heavy, character-driven issue.I feel bad for all of the mutants myself. I definitely see where Scott's coming from, however, it's obviously not meant to last. I empathize with Scott even more so because not only does he wants whats best for his species but the world as well.

I loved this. I thought the infinite comics were a joke when Marvel started them and then this one kind of sold it for me. I have missed Cyclops' inner monologue since the Marvel writing style began to pull away from thought bubbles and exposition causing him to look like a massive dbag all the time. It is nice to be reminded this is a really self-hating guy just trying to do right by everything he is lost and everything that is expected of him. Thanks Marvel. Too bad its digi only so the paper-snobs won't see it. Also making Jean Grey out of moondust... horrible horrible and exactly perfect to show the kind of bad effect the Phoenix Force is having on someone who wasn't supposed to be carrying it.

I loved this. I thought the infinite comics were a joke when Marvel started them and then this one kind of sold it for me. I have missed Cyclops' inner monologue since the Marvel writing style began to pull away from thought bubbles and exposition causing him to look like a massive dbag all the time. Exactly, which is why it's gonna go bad for the X-men

My hatred of Cyclops is preventing me from reading this issue. Which totally sucks because it sounds like it is amazing and it, apparently, features Jean.

No one man should have all that power... Cyclops is wrong for what he is doing, perfect world or not. He is just a man and... well, it will go wrong.

''The road to hell is paved with good intentions'' ...

That is all I can say about this.
