Avengers Vs. X-Men #5 - Round 5

3

It's the end of the first act. It's finally time for the Phoenix Force to get a host. This won't be good news for the Marvel Universe.

We've been waiting for the Phoenix Force to arrive and claim its host. That time is now. It's about to become a whole new game for the X-Men and Avengers.

The Good

After four previous issues, the Phoenix Force has finally arrived. With so much at stake, the heroes on each side have to really step up to stand their ground. There are some savage attacks and John Romita Jr. makes Wolverine, for example, look like a victim from KICK-ASS. While the battle rages, we do see other characters like Tony Stark and Hank Pym play to their strengths. Because so many characters are involved, it's great to see them being used in different ways. Rather than just gather as many heroes as possible and throw them at each other, we're seeing the fight take place on different levels in different ways.

We also are teased with appearance of other characters around the world. You have to wonder why they specifically were chosen to be used. Could be expect to see more of them? I do know one in particular is on the cover to an upcoming issue.

As for the main focus of the issue, we do get to see some movement in the plot. Big things are happening and we can expect some crazy action in the second half of this story.

The Bad

It may not be fair to judge this single issue by the pacing of the entire first five but it feels like it's been taking way too long for anything to happen. All we've seen is fight after fight. Hope has been on the run. Wolverine has been trying to kill her or help her. Not a lot has really been happening. Even the member of the Nova Corps we saw in the Infinite Comics managed to arrive well in advanced of the Phoenix Force. Even while things are getting intense, the action reverts back to simple scenes of character fighting character.

For some reason I was bothered when Tony Stark said, "Testing is for suckers. We're men of science." That just didn't sound like him despite Matt Fraction brilliantly writing him in INVINCIBLE IRON MAN.

I can't say I'm completely thrilled with the outcome of this issue. I won't spoil it and obviously there will be an explanation as to why what happened did. It just didn't seem right.

The AR digital content still feels it needs something more. I don't need to see penciled versions of the pages.

The Verdict

If you've been waiting for something to happen in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN, this is the issue for you. We've been getting a lot of set up along with glimpses of battles throughout the first five issues. Now that the 'first act' has come to an end, we're seeing a progression in the storyline. There is some crazy events unfolding here, and you might also find yourself surprised by how the issue ends. I may have been having high expectations but I've found my excitement lessening with each issue of battles. Now I feel we have something to look forward to. This is a moment that should be noted in the history of the X-Men and Avengers. This issue should be read in order to prepare for the rest of the series.

I was pleasantly surprised with this issue, I thought it was a significant step up from previous issues, although that might be due to my significantly lowered expectations.

Still not giving a hoot about this arc. 5 issues in should have meant the end of the series by now, not the beginning of it.

Plus JrJr should go back to school to learn to draw better lines. His artwork so far stinks.

Marvel has really gone out of their way to make the X-men look like a bunch of chumps in this series. Have they won a single battle? I wonder what the results of the fights would have looked like if X-men First Class 2 had been released instead of the Avengers. I had hoped that the showdown on the moon would be a more balanced fight, but it wasn't to be. Also, if you're going to have the entire "Extinction" team on the moon, leaving out Magneto was an obvious plot device to keep him from wrecking Iron Man's Voltron-suit. I'm calling it here folks, AvX and I are seeing other people.

"Testing is for suckers. We're men of science."

I LOLed, it's kinda truth at the end they NEVER test things it's always like

"We have the weapon ready but isn't tested yet"

"Then let's test it now" or "I hope it works fine"

This is the first issue I had a problem with, some of it was the art, the rest of it is wondering how Cyclops got everyone to drink his kool-aid, seriously, he used to be a little unfriendly, now he is just a tool

Jesus, what is Colossus going to possess next? The Enigma Force? Captain Uni-Phoenix-naut? I'll be surprised if he doesn't just explode from it all.

Anyway, the guy at my comic shop STRONGLY advised that I read this before Uncanny X-Men. I honestly don't think it would've made that much of a difference.

@The Black Hood: I think they made the x men look so bad in the first half mainly due to the fact that the x men seriously destroy the avengers later... in the up and coming solicitations..

spiderman is the only surviving member lol

Of course most of the fights were odd... colossus was stomping Rulk until he held back... magneto was about to destroy magneto until he felt the PF and let iron man beat him... magik beat strange OFF PANEL The avengers are mostly brawlers were as the x men have all types of powers its obvious there curving there abiltys & fights so that they can let lose in the end..

tho I find it funny tho how the main book isnt as interesting as the tie ins...

wow It was unexpected to see that the Phoenix choose the X-men instead of Hope. It is obvious, that Tony Stark made a huge mistake because that beam instead to kill the Phoenix, did provoke a shatter state, Big trouble, good job, Iron Man.But there are some questions about this unexpected event and they are:

1. How Cyclops knew that the Phoenix was meant for Hope?

2. Why the Phoenix choose those specific mutants? I know that it shatter the Phoenix but it choose the mutants over the Avengers, so what is the backup plan of the Phoenix now that Hope is ''dead''?

3, Does Cyclops knew all the plan of the Phoenix because he never lose the psychic connection with Jean?

4. Where the hell is coming back Jean Grey because the Phoenix is Jean Grey?

5. What is the real purpose of Hope that she is meant to do beside be possessed by the Phoenix?

6. What Namor meant that Hope need to be ready for what comes next? There is a higher threat coming to Earth that only the Phoenix can defeat?

I believe they need to explain many doubts around this event specially when they gonna bring back Jean Grey. I still believe she is the key to all this problem and Hope is just a simple tool needed by Jean.

Remember this pic when White Queen knew something important all along about that threat related to the Phoenix and she tried to tell to Cyclops what she knew and always happened something that prevented to reveal that important detail. Emma Frost even tried to kill Hope a couple of times, why? we don't know. The Phoenix choose to reveal something to Emma, why? we don't know. Prepare for what? In my conclusion, I believe there something going on here that we don't have a f***ing clue of what it is and how it gonna affect the X-Universe but it's certain that I believe is a dramatic return of Jean Grey because Hope is just the last fragment of the Phoenix that is needed to make a new closure to this scrambler plot and problems made around Jean and the Phoenix. We'll see what next to come.

My only question is the Juggernaut issue with colossus. other than that, i think this issue really turned me back onto the series. I do have to say, though, that i think it is funny that the tie ins are better than the actual issues.

Someone's gotta slap some sense into Cyclops. The Phoenix killed entire planets on it's way to earth. THOUSANDS OF BILLIONS OF SPECIES were killed and went extinct because Scott wanted to save 200 people. I'm glad we've finally gotten to the point where we can accept that the X-men are the villains of this story so that we can just move on, defeat them, and forget this ever happened.

Are we finally going to get better artwork in this event. See unlike everyone else at comicvine that are not the reviewers I like Marvel, And I like this event so far it's just I do not like John Romita, Jr. art in big event series. It was caused me to think World war hulk was ok.

Was genuinely surprised at that ending. I did get a bit of a smirk when I saw Tony built ANOTHER armor, cuz that's so Iron Man it hurts, lol. Having the Scientist Supreme help out made for a convincing plot armor to save the day.

Wish it didn't feel like these issues fly by when reading them though.

I'm a JR Jr fan, and I have to admit I am not liking the art too much. The X-men's new costumes are cheesy, especially Cyclops' visor. They look sort of 90s and overly motif-ed and half-naked for no reason. Previous Phoenixes were not really known for showing their skin.

I thought more could have happened this issue. More ridiculous fights. Black Widow vs Illyana?!! Half the Avengers on the moon couldn't even hurt most of the X-men on the moon.

And why bother putting Prof. Xavier and Legion in the set of squares on the first page when they're only in one useless panel? Honestly with the X-men's combined psi power (including Xavier, Legion, Rachel, Emma, Quire, Psylocke, etc.) the X-men should have such an absurd superiority over the Avengers it's ridiculous.

Plus having Tony and Hank build anything that could in any way majorly disrupt the Phoenix force takes their scientific/engineering abilities to an absurd level. Why is there any problem on earth they can't solve in a day if they can do that? Why not build similar machines to solve the recurring problems with Celestials, Galactus, the Infinity Gauntlet, etc.? It takes their science skills too far and makes every heroic deed a literal deus ex machina.

I want to like this series, and more or less have so far, but I'm getting annoyed. I am at least looking forward to them doing something new with the Phoenix.

I am laughing so hard about this. Even in the Wolverine and the X-Men AvX issues (a series I had been avoiding because Wolverine annoys me) some of his own refused to step in line with his way of thinking. Finally Rachel showed up and said "Hello? Remember me? I actually was the Phoenix and didn't go nutbar?"

Wolverine went cranky over a Gen Hope team member being a child soldier in Schism and started his school to "find a better way" yet throughout AvX all he has wanted to do his put his claws through Hope's eye sockets. Also he is still running X-Force in secret ages after Cyclops called it quits.

So who is the homicidal prick? And why does everyone constantly bag on Cyclops? This isn't about saving the few versus the many. If folks actually read Avengers X-Sanction they would know Cable told Cyclops that Hope HAD to survive. She is a Summers adopted or not and its a weird family that is used to time shifting and destinies and all sorts of nonsense. Of course Cyclops would do exactly what he has been doing this entire series because at the end of the day he chose the survival of mutant kind over everything else. He believes in Hope and doesn't think the planet is going to blow up. If anyone was still reading Uncanny X-Men they would have seen the X-Men face off against the planet getting squashed by Mr. Sinister playing around with toys he shouldn't be. Cyclops is not a d-bag out to destroy the planet, but simply secure the survival of his people. Tho lets not spend 50 pages on the psychology of Cyclops which is genuinely hard to read these days as his wonderful thought bubbles from the 60s/70s are gone. I really laugh at people calling the X-Men the villains of this series. If they end up being painted that way it is simply because the Avengers movie made a ridiculous amount of money.

The very idea that Tony Stark and Hank Pym can build an anti-Phoenix armor over a few days has officially shattered my mind. First the X-Men stand up to the Celestials and give laughable speeches as if they had a say in anything, now the Avengers can counter cosmic beings over a long weekend with a lab and pot of strong coffee.

I really hope the repercussions of this event do not dominate the Marvel U for long, it's so bad at this point it's either laugh or cry.

Worst issue of the series. I actually enjoyed the previous issues, but this one had way too much against it. Way too many splash and 3 panel pages and way too little dialogue. The actual content of this issue could easily have fit into a back-up story. Also, why is it that whenever there is a huge explosion, the only guy to get seriously burned is the one with the healing factor?

***Spoilers in my rant***

Yep Hawkeye shoots arrows at Frost, how could she stop that, Black Widow walks up and grabs Ilya's sword, no way to avoid that.... The Thing beats Namor under water. Cap beats Gambit with one hand while on a cell phonw. Cyclops becomes Nightwing. The Phoenix can only possess mutants. I tried Marvel, but I'm done, at least try to make some sense. Maybe let Whedon in as your new CEO
