Avengers Vs. X-Men #4 - Round 4

3

There's more fighting and more betrayal. The Phoenix Force is getting closer and closer so the heroes better figure out where they stand in terms of this massive crossover.

Things are moving forward as Jonathan Hickman takes over the reigns with the scripting.

The Good

In a surprise move last issue, Wolverine and Captain America had a bit of a falling out. The lines are starting to get a little blurry as to who is on which side. Who Wolverine ends up with in this issue is borderline surprising.

We're seeing the story take place on multiple fronts. That, along with all the characters involved adds to the huge feeling that this is supposed to be a vast story. Not only do we have the battles raging all over the planet but we also have the team of Avengers that went out into space to take on the Phoenix Force directly. You can image how that will go.

We've been seeing a lot of the Avengers have the upper hand during the battles. It's nice to see to see a little variation in some of the battles (even if we don't see the full outcomes of them). The twists are nice and the cliffhanger ending promises to raise the stakes for the next issue.

The Bad

The grand scope of the story trying to be presented is almost too much for this series. Of course there is the AVX series that will focus on actual fights but catching tiny glimpses here and then seeing characters unscathed pages later gives this a bit of an empty feeling. Part of me would like to see the AVX battles injected into the main story pages when this is all collected later this year. The betrayals do add twists to the story but it feels like that's all we're getting. We see characters fight and then someone switches sides on the others.

There seems to be some inconsistency in the art. Some characters appear to have changed their costumes (like Angel, who hasn't been wearing one since his change). There is just too much trying to be crammed into single panels in trying to show how many different characters are in battle across the world.

Overall it feels like we're going through the paces and are waiting for something to happen. Seeing how Wolverine survives since the last issue was fun but we need to start seeing more happen. But that doesn't mean more random battles.

The Verdict

We're four issues in and we haven't quite gotten anywhere just yet. We're seeing more battles and betrayals. There is a sense that you won't know what's going to happen next. The Phoenix Force is getting closer and that will definitely change the direction of where this series will go. Hickman handling the script here adds to the characterization of Wolverine and where his motivations lie. The problem comes when we get panels and pages of several characters fighting each other at different locations on the planet. We don't really see how these battles start or how they end because those will be featured in the AVX side series. It's meant to give us a bigger feel in that there is so much going on but it also takes away from the flow of the series. We see random characters fighting and find some of them show up later with no explanation how they got there. Romita Jr's art is basically the same as it's been on the first three issues. Some panels get overwhelming as there are so many characters thrown in and it feels as if there's a lack of consistency with some characters. It does appear that the next issue will bring the series to the next level as the focus may shift more towards the Phoenix Force.

AR Content

We have an update on the cover. The great thing about the trailer/animated look is it's a great way to catch readers up on what's gone on in the previous issues. Inside we get some more look at pages and panels in the penciled, inked and finished stages. There's also a lesson on from a physicist on how to destroy our planet. Please don't try that at home.

The only thing that gets me to even take a peak at the panels inside one of the issue of AvsX is Colossus and Red Hulk (mainly because I like watching them punch each others brains out on a regular basis.)

Outside of that, this is yet another example of what Bendis and his friends do well....making a promising story arc ito nothing more than talking heads, bad art and jargon. Useless, useless jargon.

I'll be sticking with my issues of Red Hulk. At least his books are consistent, and are going to have the real end of the world come August with Mayan Run.

Pity Wolvy and Hope joining forces didn't last a bit longer, that could have been interesting, I thought it was a bit weird for him to just call up the Avengers right away :/

Meh, was hoping alittle more Wolverine loose cannon....but I got this.

Nate Grey got involved. Normally I should be pissed cause now he's dragged into the craziest that is AvX, but he controlled a Raptor that attacked Pym, and didn't appear in more than one panel so it's all good.

Wolverine disappointed me in this issue. And I am glad that we get only one more issue of Romita's awful art.

This is the only issue of AvX that I have liked so far, Hickman is a great story teller. Romita's art is still terrible though.

Didn't make it to the comic store today... overall sounding like I should attempt to de-pull it when I get to the store tomorrow...

I'd love any further recommendations on whether I should drop it or keep pulling... all opinions welcome. I can't make up my own mind, so I need others to sway me, please. (Also, that way I can blame you if you're wrong... okay, or credit you if you're right.)

@TheOptimist: I think Marvel made up my mind for me. I'm done with AVX and Marvel in general. I'll keep pulling a few Marvel comics like W&tXM and Daredevil.

What was so horrible about it? How as the writing bad?

This issue did it's job quite well. Show where the teams were and the progress of their efforts to find Hope, while also showing what she was doing. The issue was a build-up to the arrival. It wasn't a big fight issue and the fights in it can be explored in other books if you so choose.

People on here really over react when it comes to JR JR's art. Its really not that bad. Is it as good as Civil War art? No is it as good as Olivier Coipel on Siege no it is not. I am not crazy about his art either but people say its terrible and I think there just going with the trend of hating. I thought this was the best issue so far, (still about 6 out of ten).

@TheAnnihilator:

  1. No dialog on 4 pages.
  2. Eight or less words of dialog on 3 other pages.
  3. 1 other page with nothing but caption boxes.
  4. Every action scene is driven by caption boxes. Not by the characters struggling against each other. This is AVX not, listen to Emma Frost's thoughts while you look at mediocre art panels of the Avengers fighting the X-Men.
  • SPOILER - Wolvie unsheathes his claws. Threatens Hope's life. Says, "Ain't no way of talkin' your way out of this. It is what it is, kid." Then in the next panel he is joking about her being to young to buy beer. Then of course, she talks her way out of a fight. As serious and clear minded as Wolvie is when he made that threat, I find it ridiculous that he wouldn't at least fight her. Didn't he just get in a major brawl with Captain America because he believes Hope should be taken out. Given his history of being a mentor to young female X-Men (Jubliee & Shadowcat) I do not think he'd make such a threat lightly.
  • Spoiler - Toad using Cerebro is a big stretch for me.

  • Dialogue*

Dialogue would have weakened those four pages. And a ton of it would have ruined the 3 other ones. Characters don't need to constantly be talking.

Caption boxes describe what is going on. Emma Frost's thoughts are what guide this issue considering we're seeing it from her point of view. Yeah, I would assume Avengers would be fighting the X-Men in a series called Avengers vs X-Men.

I think you misunderstood that moment with Wolverine.

Hope was the one who made him promise to kill her if she lost it. This is different from Jubilee (ew) and Shadowcat.

Toad is using it through Emma. But, yeah I'll give you that one.

@TheAnnihilator: A 22 page comic with 7 or 8 pages relying on the art to tell the story is a bit much for me (unless the art is superb) , but I do understand your perspective. As much as I disliked the main issue, I did enjoy the VS issue and the Uncanny X-Men tie in. If they just worked more of the VS type action, I feel that the book would be worth 4 bucks. When they rely on other books to contain all the action it cheapens the main book.

Althought on point I did enjoy this issue, I do think Wolverine was a tad out of character. He was so assertive about killing Hope and then a five second conversation changed his mind *eh?* also, Angel's new costume is Awesome.

Having read this issue and various tie-ins to the main storyline, I'm admittedly as mixed about this event as your article is. So it's good to know I'm not alone! I felt that the art in Issue 4 was lackluster, and I can see where you are coming from when you say that it was inconsistent. That was my initial reaction when I first opened up Issue 4, in comparison to previous issues. Finally I just feel that the fights of AvX deserve more shine. It just seems like we see tidbits of what is happening when all of these characters are so diverse and rich in content. I dunno - I just kind of was hoping the story would push the ticket a bit more. All in all it isn't terrible and of course I'll continue reading it - I just hope (no pun, Hope) that the story expands a bit more.

Below is an episode we filmed. In this issue of A Comic Book Look we review the beginning of AvX and we will certainly do another review coming up here. Thanks!

Who in Marvel keeps letting John Romita Jr do these big projects? His art is average at best compared to other artists.

I thought these issues where going to be the core story. I got more story line in the last Wolverine and the X-Men and Uncanny then I have in these core issues. It was like a big recap. I was waiting for the 1980's montage song to break out.

But here is the real problem I have wit this issue...

...Hope needs help getting to where she thinks she needs to go to connected with the Phoenix, the moon. (Wow, original) She needs help getting there. Who should she seek out? Hummm. That's right the only person that just the day before tried to murder her. That make perfect sense. WTF? Is Marvel so desperate to involve Wolverine in everything they do that that felt they needed to once again force him into a story line? Any one of the "real" X-Men would have helped her get to the moon faster. Hell, they could have even teleported her. They could have even made the artificial air bubble them selves for her. There are so many plot holes in this story of immense size you could fit both Namor's and Stark's egos in any one of them with plenty of room to spare.

I gave it 2.5/5 barely passing.

Man Im so done with this. I really, really tried to give this a chance but damn what a crappy series. They just ruined Wolvie, Cyclops and Caps for me, none of them are acting like themselves or atleast how I would see them act in this situation). The twists are terrible specially the one at the end of this series (WTF Wolverine, doesn't even make sense).

Why would they have Wolverine turn on Hope? I thought it would have been really cool if at the end it was Hope and Wolverine and why would Wolverine call the Avengers!?!?! he just got kicked out of the plane by Cap. GRRRR. Emma using toad to access cerebro.... LAME. lol at this point I just want Phenoix Force to kill everyone for being part of this terrible event.

I don't like the art either

The worse part is this has hijacked half the Marvel books I usually read, so that really, really sucks.

I just want to close my eyes and pretend this crap never happened :(

I really like this series so far, It keeps you guessing and I love the cover of the round 3 1/100 variant. Its probably my favorite cover with Hope in it.
