Avengers Standoff: Welcome to Pleasant Hill #1

4

The next big Marvel event begins here. It kicks off with a pretty freaky vibe.

What or where the heck is Pleasant Hill? What does that have to do with the Marvel Universe? Reading this issue, you find out exactly what it's about. The secret behind Pleasant Hill has the makings of being pretty explosive for the Marvel Universe.

Starting out with the idea seen in Captain America: Sam Wilson with S.H.I.E.L.D. possibly thinking of using Cosmic Cube fragments to alter reality, you can feel the tension and unease beginning to build up. Having Winter Soldier show up is another indication of something big about to happen. As you may be aware, Bucky has taken Nick Fury's place as Earth's protector against cosmic-level threats.

If you've watched the TV show Wayward Pines or read the three novels, you'll get a familiar sense of what Pleasant Hill is sort of like. As we're introduced to the town and its residents, you know there's much more going on beneath the surface. The great thing about the story here is that feeling of the unknown. You know perfectly well something is going to be revealed. Nick Spencer does a great job creating a weird and slightly eerie situation.

Mark Bagley handles the art with ease and, with Paul Mounts on color, creates the setting for the little mystery we watch unfold. Because Pleasant Hill is a new location, the visuals are crucial in helping to set up the story. We get just the right amount of teases throughout that lead up to the reveal at the end. This is one of those cases where you really need to experience the reveal rather than allow yourself to be spoiled. I'd give a good example of this but even that would be a spoiler.

Within the story, you'll see the huge problems that could result from Pleasant Hill existing. You almost have to ask, how could so-and-so actually be involved with something like this? It may feel like we can see where this story will go, but this is just the prologue. There's no telling where this will lead us, but it's not looking good for those in charge. I do have to say I kind of love the name and why it was chosen.

Something big is about to happen in the Marvel Universe. With a prologue that lights the fuse on a big powder keg, you won't want to miss the groundwork being laid out here. Nick Spencer and Mark Bagley set up the idea of Pleasant hill nicely, and you can see just how bad things could get. What made this issue really enjoyable was having no idea what to expect and reading the reveal or twist before getting spoiled. Find out what Pleasant Hill is all about. Once you visit, you'll probably find you can't leave this special place. It'll be very very interesting to see how this complete story plays out. Get ready for some serious stuff about to be unleashed upon the Marvel Universe.

I wonder when Iso-8 is going to be introduced to MU? I recall an article about it being published some months ago and have been expecting some kind of event to herald it but I don't think this will be it.

It already has, it's been in the Ultimates and Contest of Champions books.

Sorry guys, another dime-a-dozen event just isn't that interesting. This is like the X-men time traveling: happens all the time. Besides from the preview it just looks like SHIELD and Maria Hill are being semi-evil again. Again it's like the X-men time traveling: happens all the time.

You almost knew, no matter if this was good, that there would be people on here complaining lmao. Events sell, there really is too many, but if you don't like them then just don't buy them.

I haven't read the book but I do know how it ends, and the ending reveals the concept underlying the story as pretty threadbare and contrived, from a story logic standpoint. I won't spoil it for those who don't know, but what Pleasant Hill is revealed to be is a really bad idea (within the story), made even worse by which character's idea it was.

Agreed. This was much better than I expected going into it. I don't know if I'll buy all of the issues this is taking place in, but I'll definitely get the next Alpha issue and decide from there.

@jonny_anonymous: I haven't read Ultimates. I had to cut my book spending down some time ago and starting to read new books was one of those.

Someone just spoil the twist for me. There was a 0% chance of me reading this, or anything related to standoff, but maybe if the twist is as interesting as the review wants me to believe, then it might be worth it.

(remember to use the Spoiler tag if you choose to tell me what happens!)

Five bucks a comic buys a lot of negativity and as this is just the kick off to the event expect to pay anywhere from 50 to 80 dollars to get the whole story, depending upon it's length. That's assuming that it A) actually ends instead of flowing into the next event and B) comes out anywhere near on time and marvel just doesn't do that sort of thing very well.

I liked it, was surprised by then ending even though I shouldn't have been. (given Thunderbolts was announced as returning) The only thing I'm scratching my head about though is why do they have their weapons and costumes at the end?

@stormphoenix: I wish I could say for sure, because to me..I picked it up because I felt like I HAD to, as this is suppose to set off the entire CW2 story line.

And honestly, it felt like a riff on Wayward Pines, and literally it was the very last page and the reveal of characters I personally love and they have not been seen in some time.

I try not to read to many reviews and previews and the such , for moments like this, I want to be surprised and get the full impact as much as I can.

But I will offer this, you can skip the story, and just flip to the final page and I am sure it will be enough to either arouse your curiosity for purchase, and convince you this isn't worth your time

At least this is just a crossover series and not a mini or maxi-series. I already collect most of the series this crosses over with. That feels less like an EVENT already.

It's a good intro. Basically the twist at the end is what sells the whole issue. I mean the whole thing is well done, but having watched Wayward Pines last year this felt a little unoriginal. At least until the Marvel spin at the end. This could actually make for an interesting story. 4 stars is the right score.
