Avengers #8 - Starbranded

4

What happens when the most unlikely young boy is given tremendous power?

The Good

The story of the young boy or girl who is obedient, gets good grades, and often gets overlooked in school until they are suddenly blessed with a super power is one that we've seen many times before in comics. It's similar to Spider-Man's story, if you think about it. Peter Parker was an average young man in High School, got good grades, never got into any trouble, and he is suddenly given this great power that allows him to transform into Spider-Man. But there was a lesson there for Spider-Man: that with "great power comes great responsibility." Parker wound up taking the power given to him and doing something positive with it, but that's not always the case, right? Not everyone that is given great power decides to be responsible with it. In fact, some people are downright irresponsible, and that's the reality. This is exactly the idea Hickman is toying with in the current AVENGERS series.

At the start of the first issue we were introduced to some rather interesting cosmic beings who were working on transforming Mars. Rather than eradicating them, the Avengers turned their backs on them and let these seemingly omnipotent beings do their thing so long as they stayed away from planet Earth. Well, you can't expect these guys to be in the same star system and not cause any trouble, I guess. At the end of issue # 3 of this series it had become clear that this was not the last we had seen of these characters, and we were right. The question is, what do they have in store for the Avengers?

The story here is rather interesting and picks up right where we had last left our heroes. Following the "White Event," a young boy is literally transformed, but how will he deal with his newfound power? That is the story Hickman introduces to new readers in this issue, and it seems to be the start to a very good one.

The art is, once again, incredibly pretty. The colors are very complimentary to the pencils in this issue and the result is really aesthetically pleasing and easy to read.

The Bad

As interested as I am in seeing what happens next and what decisions this new character will make, how his past will influence the individual he becomes now that he has this newfound power, it does seem like a rather tired and cliche trope we've seen before several times.

The Verdict

This issue is good, I really like that we had a break in between and now we are coming full circle to the start of the series : I think that's a good thing. The result is a positive issue and a lot of fun to read, and serves as a solid (and interesting) introduction to this new character. It will be interesting to see how he develops and eventually deals with members of the Avengers in the future. My only complaint is the fact that it's a character origin we have seen many times before, but I am still interested in seeing how Hickman takes this concept and makes it his own. The art in the issue is solid, and the colors really make everything so pretty. This continues to be an interesting story and a series I continue to look forward to.

It was pretty formulaic, but still rather enjoyable. I'd say this is probably one of the least-interest issues in Hickman's run so far, but that's not saying much. For the most part, it's been pretty great.

Totally.

This was my favorite issue of this series so far. There's a lot of great stuff here, and that look Carol gave Hulk before the fastball special was priceless. Great to see the story finally pick up the pace, too.

Loved the issue. Hopefully Starbrand knows how to fly, so he could get the heck off of Mars!

I'm so glad Carol isn't just furniture anymore like she was under Bendis.

Also, I hate to be a continuity stickler, but this is out of hand. WHY IS THIS MASSIVE EVENT NOT MENTIONED ELSEWHERE?! You'd think the Marvel Universe at large would be in on this.

Not that I don't agree with rating, but after seeing so many 5 stars, I figured this was going to get one after I read it. The art was great, the story was very good and is setting something up in a good way. Way to many 5's on here. A 5 is a classic if you ask me. This was something I'd reccomend because it's the beginning of a story that looks like it'll be good. A five start is me saying you're crazy if you don't read it.

@The Mast:

stuff like that has always been a problem with comics in general. Take example something like H'el on Earth or Gorilla Warfare & why the Justice League weren't there to deal with that.

I think this issue made me dislike the Avengers greatly. They came off as crazed war hungry monsters! Seriously, wtf?! I never hated the Avengers more than this issue!

Not a bad issue, I just don't know how invested I am in any of this New Universe stuff.

@Cafeterialoca: MY FEELINGS EXACTLY!!! this is what Scott summers was saying... everything has to go with the way the Avengers (Captain America mostly) want it to go, they dictate the outcome -.-.... it's like they expect people to bow down to them, just cause they have a damn hulk... but back on track. This issue was great, Is Nightmask a bad guy now btw?

Exactly, especially since Hickman is also writing the also-universe-ending New Avengers with both Cap and Iron Man in that as well.

Yeah, once again the Avengers beat down people who don't do exactly what they say. And they wonder why the X-men don't like them. They really are becoming the bullies of the super-hero set, and they didn't use to be like that.

It's really annoying me. It's the one reason I dislike the Avengers. They arrive to late, and then they handle situations poorly.

To be honest, it was such a duplicate of other similarly-poorly-handled scenes that I assumed the point was going to be that Cap was going to learn from his previous mistakes. But, apparently not.

I'm sorry, but the Avengers are kinda A-holes in this issue. That kid had no idea what was happening to him, and I applaud Captain America for trying to calm him down, but what happens? Hulk goes ape sh*t and charges the kid, so when he defends himself, they all attack him? Yeah, really cautious guys...

that kid did just level an entire university, and launched hulk into orbit. intentionally or not, i can see how the avengers would see him as a threat and the need to repress him.

i loved the "you thinking what i'm thinking?" look that captain marvel gave hulk before throwing him back at the starbrand.
