Avengers #1 - Avengers World

5

It's a new beginning with familiar faces for the Avengers. But will they be prepared for Hickman, Opena and a new threat?

The Good

With the way the Avengers titles have had the center stage at Marvel courtesy of Brian Michael Bendis and with a hit movie, you'd expect that trend to continue. Jonathan Hickman is coming off a successful fun on FANTASTIC FOUR so it's natural that we'll all have high expectations with his taking over the the core AVENGERS title. Joining him is Jerome Opena and our expectations for greatness continue to rise.

I'll admit to having a little Avengers-overload lately. With so many events, tie-ins and crossovers, it felt like we were getting too much. What Hickman does is start off in a big way but also with some subtlety. Tony Stark is a man of genius and we see him thinking over the state of things in the Marvel Universe. In a simple conversation with Captain America, he makes the statement, "We have to get bigger." The stage has been set.

Now that shouldn't necessarily be a cause for alarm. It doesn't mean we're going to see all the Avengers in one book with no sense of stability in a roster. It's more about taking the book in a bigger direction. That can be a scary thought but do we really want to see the same old Avengers story just told by a new creative team?

Let's focus on that team for a moment. We know we can expect big and crazy things from Hickman. It's been said before that he usually has a huge plan in place when he comes on a book. Just within this first issue, you get a taste that something big is coming. It's more about the atmosphere established. It's not a forced feeling of trying to push things just for the sake of it. It does feel like a natural progression in a sophisticated way. Jerome Opena's art is amazing. Combined Dean White's colors, you get the feeling of being immersed into a different kind of Avengers story. This is a great way to start off this volume with the Marvel NOW! initiative.

The Bad

You can't help but cringe a bit at seeing the roster of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk and Thor. That roster should sound very familiar being the same from the movie. It's not a bad thing since it is a strong team. But the feeling of fear for the book moving closer to the Cinematic Universe can't be ignored. Luckily, we do get the impression that things will change. Because Hickman is writing, we should have more faith.

The threat coming along almost makes it feel as if we've missed something. Where did they come from? Obviously it's something we'll find out more about but it does feel like some time has passed between this issue and the end of the previous volume.

The Verdict

What could be better than Jonathan Hickman on AVENGERS? Add in Jerome Opena, Dean White and a strong roster and you know we can expect great things here. The Avengers comics have a history of big things happening but lately there has been moments where the stories have been hit or miss. Hickman hits the ground running. The idea of 'going bigger' is a great concept and fits with the changing nature of the Marvel Universe. We need to see some changes otherwise the stories will become stagnant. We're not seeing a relaunch or reboot of things but a nice ambitious start to a new chapter. I have no idea where Hickman is going to take the team and series and I can't wait to find out.

This sounds like the Avengers book for me, a new Marvel reader looking to jump on with Marvel Now. As a new reader a I feel like Marvel handled this event/rebranding horribly. Uncanny Avengers is a HORRIBLE place for new people to jump in at. Not to mention they already have one or two other post-AvX books. Avengers should have been the leading book, not UA.

I'm not getting this strictly based on the fact that it's bi monthly. I can't afford it. It was this or All New X-Men and I'm more of an x-men fan. I'll more than likely get the trade eventually. This does look amazing. Same goes for new avengers.

I'll be holding off for trades on this one, but I'm definitely interested in getting into more Marvel books and this seems as good a place as any to start (outside of the weirder stuff like Deadpool and FF).

I get a half day Thursday so I'm rushing after school to pick this up, After Hickman's run of Fantastic Four my expectations are sky high, combined with the fantastic rotating art team (not a bad one in the deck) this is most definitely my most favourite Marvel Now book, which makes the bi-monthly shipping easier to swallow. Finally I can get a book to read after getting psyched by the movie (Bendis is great but he should've left Avengers after Siege)

This is one of the only Marvel Now titles I've got on my pull list and I'm super excited to read it. All the advanced reviews have been good.

My DC pull list is dropping to just Swampy, Animal Man, and Bats so that I can get some more Marvel Now books. Adding this, Secret Avengers, Fantastic Four, and maybe GOTG along with my normal pull list.

Good review however, I'm going to take a moment to offer some constructive criticism. Is there any way to change the 5 star rating system? I find it very misleading and quite innaccurate. There were obviously some small problems with this issue, so should it really get 5/5 stars? I've seen many reviews on here where there was nothing to be put in the bad section. How do these compare?

I think even half star increments would be an improvement. But I think a 5/5 star should be reserved for those flawless books with great story, and art. Not just an above average job well done for a book.

Thanks for listening.

I'll be getting New Avengers, but it's nice to know the core Avengers book isn't in good hands. Better than Brian "I'm gonna spend the next two years undoing everything I spent the past 8 years pulling off." Bendis.

Seriously, He spent the past year bringing mutants back after House of M, restoring Vision and Wasp, and removing the results of Civil War. It's like he wanted to make sure his run had no consequences at all.

I am right on the cusp of getting too many books and I simply cannot justify a bi-monthly book that seems to do nothing besides solidify the idea that the movies are informing the comics more and more.

Sorry, Hickman. You're gonna be a wait-for-trade I feel.

That's not THAT important.. I also jumped into Uncanny Avengers blindly. I was confused, but i just had to read up a few things, didn't take long, to understand everything that was going on. So i'm gonna stick with it cause i like its roster a lot more than this... Any "traditional avengers team up" doesn't interest me.

what's with the metal arms on Hulk on the one cover. Oh well. I'm going to assume this is going to be similar to what Morrison did when he wrote the JLA with a massive sized team. Each story with star a few members. We even got a cool cartoon styled that way called JLA united.

I really want to get on the ground level with Hickman on the Avengers, but I'm just sick of the double shipping of $4 dollar books that are not worth $4. So many of the regular shipping $3 books are WAY better than the double shipping $4 books, and I really do know why as they are pushing it too hard to make money on these books. The writing and art suffer when things are double shipped.

I'm on the verge of cancelling a bunch of Marvel titles because of this and just get the trades and $3 books so as to hurt them in the pocket book a bit. I would like to see others do this, but alas, I think that is just a pipe dream.

@theTimeStreamer: First of all, he didn't say it was a bad roster. Second, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow have never all been on the Avengers on the same time, primarily because the Hulk hasn't been an official Avenger since Avengers #2... which was in 1963. So no, this roster hasn't existed for a long time. It's a new combination. Tony's point was that it is unfortunate that Marvel's cinematic universe is so forcibly influencing the regular universe that Hickman has been forced to include these six Avengers on his team whether he wanted to or not.

Douche.

Hulk's now wearing armor. See Bruce has joined with SHIELD in Indestructable Hulk. The armor hasn't showed up yet but if I were to guess They gave him that as oppose to just continue give him a stander SHIELD uniform every time he hulks out.

The only thing I could think of after reading this issue was, "Wow. What Morrison was to JLA, is what Hickman's going to be to The Avengers."

It's what I've always wanted for this series. Excellent first issue, and here's to many more.

I was really into this issue. I wouldnt give it a 5 though. Im a bit confused. Didn't the avengers always have a huge roster? idk i thought the "big idea" would be a bit more intense. I really loved the art although some of their faces kinda looked funny to me. I also didn't like Abyss mind controlling or instigating the hulk to fight thor. I feel like i've seen that too many times already. Cap also seemed cheesy. its minor nit picking but i liked the issue. It really gives me a sense that something big is coming up. And yeah i guess they had to go with the movie roster.

Wasn't as great as I thought it would be, but still pretty good. Next few issues will really pick up, I think.

One thing confuses me, though. The way Tony describes it, the whole point of the team "going bigger" was for when things got really bad. Well, according to Bruce, the $#!+ has already hit the fan, seeing as how two million people have already fell victim to whatever it is the Garden is doing. So why the hell didn't they pull the trigger right away and go in with everyone they recruited?

I see this first issue being very polarizing. I myself am not sure exactly how I feel about it. On one hand Hickman makes some very obtuse writing decisions here, that certainly Hickman is well known for, but don't quite fit with the spirit of the Avengers for me. The jumping back and forth through time, and the grandiosity of the narrator seemed unnecessary and was certainly not new-reader friendly as Marvel Now is touting itself to be. On the other hand, new villains are very hard to do right, and I think Ex Nihilo might just be the greatest breath of fresh air to a rouges gallery in ages. Aleph and Abyss (is that her name?) are also distinct and enjoyable. But I must say, that last page featuring the new roster has me excited for issue 2. There are some surprises there I wasn't expecting, including some characters who appear to be new.

One character they showed from the back seemed to look like Monica Rambeau. I wonder if with Carol Danvers now Captain Marvel, if Monica might be the new Captain Universe? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I'm pretty much bought for this title. I hesitated when I picked it up but when I looked thru it I just had to grab it. I mean... the art alone is just, wow. Am I the only one who likes how Hulk was drawn here?! It gave me a feeling of how he was drawn in the good ol' days. The story line was well written. I don't know, man, this book is just complete gold.

I noticed that too. To be fair, the Avengers deal with a lot of big threats anyway, and with Thor and Hulk in the line-up that went to Mars, a lot of other heroes might be redundant, but it still struck me as strange that the new Avengers team wasn't assembled earlier in the issue.

And why did Captain America go through a costume change montage after returning to earth like it was a big deal? Half of the team had new costumes, but they were wearing them from the very beginning of the issue.
