Astonishing X-Men #50

4

Everyone's talking about a certain event that's supposed to happen in this issue. But what about the rest of it?

Unless you've been hiding with your head under your pillow, you probably know one thing that's supposed to happen in this issue.

The Good

We have so many different kinds of X-MEN comics these days. That's a good and a bad thing. It's bad because it means more money for us to spend each month. What's good is some of them have very distinct feels to them. ASTONISHING X-MEN almost feels like a more mature X-MEN comic. UNCANNY tends to have more action, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN has its share of action mixed in with humor and characterization. ASTONISHING is similar to WOLVERINE/X-MEN but still feels a little different. That main difference is Marjorie Liu.

I've said it many times in the past when reviewing Liu's titles, she gets how to write relationships. Where else would you expect to see Northstar, Gambit and Iceman talk about relationship problems. It's just not something many writers could make work. But Liu does make it work. And of course that relationship-writing is what brought this issue to the spotlight this week, in particular Northstar's relationship with his boyfriend Kyle.

It's easy for some to accuse the media coverage as just a way to build hype for the book. But that's not the way the issue is written. Northstar first revealed his sexual orientation back in 1992. Why wouldn't he someday find love and want to propose? It just make sense. The X-Men titles have always dealt with discrimination, acceptance, tolerance and evolution. Northstar's in love. He wants to marry the person he loves. The fact that they're both guys makes no difference.

It'd also be easy to assume it's going to be a nice cookie-cutter proposal but things are rarely easy when you're in the X-Men. Liu handles it all perfectly. And the nice thing is, this isn't the focal point of the issue. There is actual other X-Men business going on.

Mike Perkins art is growing on me with each issue. I do really like it but there's the occasional bit that sometimes stands out and causes a distraction.

The Bad

I don't really want to bring up the art in this section but as I mentioned above, sometimes the characters look a little off. I am starting to appreciate Wolverine's look here but he just looks so different compared to the numerous other monthly appearances he makes. Black Widow puts in an appearance and I didn't quite recognize her at first until I saw her name mentioned.

Speaking of Black Widow, Wolverine asked her "What's life like these days for an Avenger?" This struck me as a little odd since Wolverine is an Avenger as well as an X-Man (and member of X-Force, etc).

This is of no fault to the comic but

did I completely miss Karma here? I can see how she's involved but there's no actual appearance despite what the solicit says.
EDIT: I went back and saw part of her in behind a door.

The Verdict

This is the issue everyone is talking about. It makes sense that it would get a lot of attention but the content isn't forced just to generate hype. Marjorie Liu knows how to write relationships. When it comes to a character like Northstar and actually exploring his orientation, it's surprising how long it's taken for him to come this far. And Liu is the perfect person to handle it. But this issue isn't just about Northstar and his love life. The story does continue form the last couple and we're seeing more interaction and bonding between the other characters. Liu is even giving Warbird a great personality which we don't really get to see in WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN. Mike Perkins art is growing on me. I still think Wolverine and others sometimes look a little off. It just gets hard to get used to when we see such a range of artists working on the same characters several times a month. The absence of another character caused a little bit of confusion as well. ASTONISHING X-MEN is definitely one of the top X-titles put out. It offers a different vibe that isn't present in some of the other books.

haha this is one of the worst X-titles.

but not because of the Gay wedding. cause i can obviously see that every comic publisher is trying to get into the gay rights movement now.

this just feels like an unnecessary x-title. and to think theirs gonna be 2-3 more X-titles coming out this month yaa i think im done with x-titles all together. ill just stick to Daredevil, Venom, and Punisher.

but this issue will be highly graded ad regarded simply because of the wedding. bringing politics to comics again is ok but to me its outdated and chessy. leave all that stuff to archie comics guys..and DC is making one of their characters come out of the closet(my guess wonderwoman) i mean lets get real. what if Transexuals wanted equal rights and found a big movement....then are all publishers gonna get one of their main characters to come out as well? hmm i call it SELLING OUT...but everyone else here calls it entertaining...so to each his own i guess.

Karma's is doomed to bad luck forever. Which is funny cause she's also gay.

@zackattack529: I can actually think of worse X-titles. Obviously (by my rating), I do enjoy this one. And I wouldn't call Northstar's relationship a stunt (he doesn't get married here as the press release states its next issue). This was Marjorie Liu's writing and it just happens that the publisher decided to make a big deal about it. There is plenty of other story involving the Marauders continuing in this issue. It's not just a comic about Northstar.

Is everyone really talking about the marriage? I thought it has been overshadowed by DC's new/old gay character.

Thought it was a really good issue, Liu just gets certain characters. I agree it's one of the best X-books at the moment. I'm looking forward to what happens after the wedding arc.

Hey people, Fun Fact: The X-men are all metaphors for gay people.

Get powers at puberty, religions hate you, society hates you, you were born this way and can't change it?

I mean, just look at Wolverine. He's a total Bear if I've ever seen one. Or Cyclops with the one eye. or the large, hard and steely colossus. COME ON PEOPLE. A gay marriage when all this is going on shouldn't mean anything to you, unless you never once understood the message behind the X-men since Chris Claremont took over back in 75.

I like this issue -- like the one previous as well. Not too keen on the art -- I just can't. If you can't recognize characters, then there is something going wrong. Hopefully this will improve.

I enjoy the dialogue and Liu's focus on relationships (not just Northstar's, but everyone's) is great. Enjoying this so far.

I'm not a fan of the lineup. I don't get why Warbird's even on the team. I love Karma and Northstar and Iceman is one of my favorite X-Men, but I feel like Wolvie and Gambit don't mesh well, especially with Logan as the leader....

the gay stuff doesn't bother me. let northstar be gay(he isn't that cool of a character anyways). i don't read this series, but had to check out the hype. the problem with the book was the art, and the soap-drama-sex-int-the-city-girlfriend talk between superheros. really? gambit/iceman/northstar talking about feelings, and you should get kyle a gift....c'mon man. now that's gay, lol.

On a sour note...

I really hate that Gambit's high resistance to telepathy has been retconned out of existence. (Thanks a lot, Carey -_-)

Other than that, it felt like I was reading the X-Men that I grew up with and loved.

I feel the exact opposite on every point made in this review. I like the art.. it seem that time is being taken and the artist has his own style. I really liked the way Wolverine was drawn. Especially in the restaurant with his hat that he always wore in 'Uncanny' in the 80s. I recognized Black Widow immediately (red hair, black clothes, Black Widow's belt and bracelets). I also felt the relationship parts were incredibly forced. Gambit and Iceman giving relationship advice on a mission? And Gambit speaking seriously on the subject? It seemed out of place and unauthentic. I hate that they put this relationship stuff into the book. Or maybe it's the way they crowbar it in? It's waaaay over dramatic (Northstar screaming 'Oh Kyle' then crashing?). I feel like if they took out all panels that had anything to do with Northstar/Kyle this would have been a fantastic issue.

@astrid12: I'm just being a fanboy is all. Given that original image had Cylops, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, Beast, and Wolverine.I just like the original better is all.

Relationship has existed long before Northstar/Kyle and in almost every comic book series. I don't see why you need to complain now.

"Marjorie Liu knows how to write relationships."

I think you miss-worded your statement there. Here ya go.

"Marjorie Liu hasn't the foggiest idea of how the relationships between friends (let alone lovers) are supposed to be written."

That fits a bit better.

It's more the fact that you show up in every thread I've posted in to make the same taunting comment, directed at me personally.

If you had read my post, I don't specifically mention Hellion and X-23. They aren't the only relationship Liu has messed up. But of course, you didn't read it, because you're only looking to get a reaction out of me.

Here's your reaction: :o)
