Aquaman: Futures End #1 - Long Live the Dead King

3

Five years in the future, Aquaman is trying to unite nations

The Good

Five years in the future, the world is very different. Aquaman is trying to unite the world, but there are rebels working against him.

There's lots of loose ends in the current run of AQUAMAN that all come together here. Mera is still in Xebel. The Dead King is still around. Aquaman is still trying to unite Atlantis and the surface world and now Aquaman is enjoying the company of Ya'Wara. Folks who have been following the regular AQUAMAN book will enjoy the fact this so closely follows that series. Writer Dan Jurgens does a wonderful job connecting this 5 years in the future world to Jeff Parker's run. Seeing these ideas played out in full is easily the most enjoyable part of the issue. However, because of this, a lot more problems arise.

While the overall art was a bit of a miss, Aquaman's new outfit is pretty awesome. The new costume is sleeker and this is the costume that is a lot more suited to the character, rather than the classic design we've seen for quite some time. What I'm getting at is that the costume Aquaman is wearing in this issue is what he should be wearing in main continuity.

The Bad

The biggest problem with this issue is that because it's five years in the future and giving the reader so much info about how so many things wrapped up in Aquaman's stories, it makes me not want to read the main AQUAMAN book because I already know how everything is going down. It's hard to assume what's going to happen after this Futures End is over, but whether they just reset the story lines or continue on, either way really screws over the main book. This really isn't a reflection of Jurgens as a writer though.

The artwork is a bit underwhelming. There's a few problems in the coloring department, where eyes, covered in the shadows, stick out like a cartoon. The background disappear from time to time, and as a whole, the artist style for this issue is just ok. Sometimes, it looks pretty solid, but overall, it's a bit of a disappointment. The Dead King doesn't have the same feel to him. He's no longer a intimidating looking character.

The Verdict

What this issue does well with jumping forward into the future and giving the reader a "where are they now" update is the same thing that hurts the main series. Aquaman's new outfit is really the highlight here and while the book was just ok, this is one of two parts and I'm intrigued to see how this plays out in the Aquaman & the Others issue. If you're an Aquaman fan and reading the main series, you'll want to pick this up. However, if you're not, pass this one up.

Haven't read it yet but Ya'wara? sigh. Predictable.

I don't know why people think leaving a couple happy is a bad thing. You don't need drama to make it interesting.

Comics are so soap opera sometimes.

@fallschirmjager: Wait wasn't Ya'wara a lesbian?

That was heavly implied on the early issues of Aquaman whe she said she loved Kahina in a particular way, but she didn't told her beacuse she respected her husband and sons.

What exactly happened in those 5 years?

My whole issue with Futures End is that it's only 5 years in the future so we're seeing who isn't gonna die between now and then. I know comics never really let the villains win, but the suspense that comes with whether or not the heroes will pull through is a significant part of why I buy the books. Looking five years into the future is like spoiling every story we get for the next five years

And another thing, is Futures End doing so poorly that they needed to make another Villains Month sort of thing? I don't care about Futures End (mostly cause of what I said above) so this unexpected and unwanted pause in the stories I've been keeping up with for a while is really lame

The ex-English teacher in me knows that's a "thing" on the Internet, but I'm grammar-raging right now in my head right now.

Nothing is wrong with her, but Aquaman is married. He has been since the 1960's.

They all ready tried once to introduce drama into that relationship and it was a pile of fail. I have no interest in seeing it again.

@marcosvergara14 I don't remember.

I kinda want this in 3D simply because Aquaman is my favorite DC character. Are the issues better looking than last years September event?

Pretty disappointed by this issue. I expected something more from it rather than more than obvious plot twists and stuff like that. I mean literally, every single thing that happened here that was supposed to be shocking actually wasn't.

Seriously though. Why can't people let Aquaman and Mera be happy, and have an Aquababy?

Yes. Lets make sure this doesn't happen.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Dead King again, but everything else about the story pissed me off.

@marcosvergara14: Just because she was in love with Kahina doesn't mean she was a lesbian.

That said, I definitely was not feeling this issue. It feels like this wasn't an issue 1, but rather an issue at least five chapters ahead. It feels like there is so much information and contacts that we have no idea about and we are just being introduced to it in the middle. Hope to god this future doesn't happen.

Did they really need to bring back Atlan? He seemed happy to die and be with his wife and children. He didn't need to be brought back so soon and resume the same tyrant role he had before. Why did they think this was a good idea?

And for the worst of it. Arthur and Ya'Wara? Soooo predictable. This is like a lame, half passed rebound. If there was any relationship that was stable and equal, it was Arthur and Mera but this comic did what I was hoping would never happen anytime soon. I won't be reading anymore of this because it made a very ugly first impression.
