Aquaman #3 - The Trench, Part Three

5

This issue features Aquaman fighting hordes of savage cannibalistic sea creatures, a look into his past and plenty of action and butt-kicking. This series continues to impress.

DC Comics, Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis continue their crusade to prove to the comic reading public just how incredibly cool Aquaman is.

The Good

Last issue Aquaman was called into town after an attack by savage sea creatures and soon came face to face with them. This issue opens up with a flashback to Arthur's youth but quickly jumps straight into the action. And let's be clear that there is a lot of action. These cannibalistic creatures don't hold back and with their claws and teeth, there is plenty of blood flying around.

Not only do we get to see Aquaman in action but Mera is also shown to be more than capable of taking on this horrific threat. When the battle is over, it's what happens next that makes the story get even more interesting. A visit to someone from Aquaman's past opens a door that we will hopefully revisit soon.

Geoff Johns has stated many times how much he digs Aquaman and it shows. That isn't to say the character is being written in a biased way. Aquaman does what he needs to and just happens to be a badass while doing it. Ivan Reis' art is truly a sight to be seen. The action scenes are incredible. The way the action is depicted and the effects added make it a visual treat as well. Rod Reis' colors are phenomenal as well. The sun setting on the ocean is a beautiful panel.

The Bad

Nothing really. Some of the 'authorities' were a bit of a jerk with Aquaman. That's about it.

The Verdict

Aquaman has been consistently good. This is Aquaman as he should be written. Also, it's not just issues of Aquaman kicking butt left and right, there's a genuine great story going on. The introduction of the Trench last issue and this issue is setting the stage for a grand adventure. The ocean is a vast area and you can only imagine what other unknown creatures might be out there waiting to be discovered. Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis are the perfect team for this book and Aquaman has moved to the top of the reading list each month when it's released. There's plenty of fun, adventure, violence and mystery to satisfy every comic reader.

Of all the 52 that I've gone through so far I have to say that this title has been the best surprise of all of them. You're totally right that this is the way Aquaman should be handled.

I look forward to each issue in this one :)

This is one of those series that really knows how to tell a fun story. It never fails to bring a smile to my face.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite New 52 DC comic next to The Flash.

@redbird3rdboywonder: superman is still superman, eventually it could be better or maybe it will just start hitting it hard about 6 issues from now and be better. ( not better than Aquaman).

Aquaman along with Barry Allen's new Flahs series, are gonna brake DC sales record before new year comes /o/ ... maybe one, two or for of the Bat-Family books might help lol like Batwoman or Batman or Nightwing or (as expected even tough is not directly connected to the bat family) Red Hood & The Outlaws.

I just wanna know more about his trident, does it let him fly?

I can see people who haven't seen Aquaman in action being dubious about his usefulness but the way he was treated after he saved people.....c'mon.

Loving this series though new 52 Aquaman could learn a thing or two on how to handle douchey cops from Emperor Aquaman lol. Also, Aquaman and Mera are officially my favorite comics couple.

I felt like this whole issue was planting seeds for the future. I think this book will be mediocre until bigger things start happening. I feel more like were still being introduced. Like how Firestorm is- which was actually really good this week.

I see that Marine biologist proving to be a problem in the future. Loving Mera in this title. Its getting a little formula to see someone make a joke about Aquaman and then have him show how much of a badass he is to prove them wrong. Play it straight. If I'm buying the comic, I already think Aquaman is cool. Enough already!!

What? he literally just deputed?

Scott Lobdell was asked if he would appear in Teen Titans and said:

Eventually, I am certain. In fact, SCOOP HERE: I was originally asked to include him in the first issue -- one of our earliest conversations between me and the editors. He was going to be part of the Core Five! But then it was decided, if I recall, that he was going to be such an important player in another book, that it should be left up to that book's writer to define exactly who Aqualad is and how he fits into the world. If I were writing him over in TEEN TITANS, his adventures in the other book would conflict with the team book. So, for the sake of Kaldur's continuity and growth he will not be appearing in the book just yet. (That said, I can't wait for the day he's a Teen Titan! Is he an awesome character, or what?!)
And your welcome! LOL!

Sounds to me like he might show up in an arc of this book, or maybe something else.

@HombreMan: Mmm, the sound was cool, but I have a personal hate to that times:

Batman = Bad joke, Dick = Nasty and ridiculous fishy underpants without anything else in the legs , Hawkman = weirdo guy in a bad bird costume, Aquaman ... no words

This series is doing a good job giving Aquaman something others tried to give him but never did it: Respect (and a serious look)

Doesn't change what I meant to say but was to lazy to write.

Original Aqualad - Garth: Retconned out of existence (like Donna Troy or Wally West).

Recent Aqualad - Jackson Hyde: Will appear first in the current Geoff Johns' Aquaman title and then Teen Titans. Still exists (like Cassie Sandsmark or Bart Allen)

You really should, the only gripe I have is the amount of "People don't respect Aquaman and that's bad :(" going on.

Anyone remember "The Savage Sub-mariner"? (Short-lived series in the 70s  triple-anchored with the "comics code", a stupid costume and bad artwork.)
I have always thought that Aquaman could be "BadAss" without long hair, beard, and a fish-hook for a hand. (But, that was a good try!)

I will say that if Mera is still around and as much a part of the book as she currently is that the book needs to be renamed Aquaman and Mera. Right now its like having Flash and Green Lantern in a book together but only calling it the Flash. I love the book, but give the ginger some credit where credit is due.

@TheBlackHood: Completely agree. Mera is half the reason I love this book, and I do love it. Aquaman and Mera have the potential to be the Reed and Sue Richards of the DC Universe, so I hope they capitalize on that.

Seriously, I love this series. I was out of town last week, so I just got it today. When I was in the store I told my friend that I couldn't wait to read the next Aquaman issue and then that I couldn't believe those words had come out of my mouth. Johns is doing some great work.
