The Amazing Spider-Man #698 - Dying Wish Prelude: Day in the Life

5

This issue absolutely changes everything. That's been said before but this is for real. Spoiler free review.

This review does not reveal the big twist. It's better to let everyone read the issue for themselves rather than discuss the spoilers.

The Good

If you're going to make a bold new direction for a character with a long running series, you have to go as big and bold as you can. That's exactly what Dan Slott does here. This will definitely be an issue people talk about. You'll find yourself re-reading it as well as going back to read the previous appearances of Doctor Octopus since AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600.

As the final issue, 700, fast approaches and we prepare for the next series, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, Slott has made a few comments. He's mentioned that the Spider-Man in that series will not be Peter Parker as well as readers wanting to gather torches and pitchforks when they see what Slott does.

This will indeed be an issue that will cause some anger. Comic readers can be a fickle lot. They can complain when we get the same stories over and over yet when a major shake up occurs, they immediately plan their attack against the creators. I explained the events leading up to this to my nine-year-old daughter and we read this issue together. When she saw the big hook, her eyebrow raised and she was silent. I asked her what she thought and she said, "It's okay. Things always go back." That's what readers need to realize. Things always go back to the status quo...usually.

We need to look at what this issue means in terms of telling new stories. Just as I was outraged when it appeared Phil Urich chopped off Hobgoblin's head back when Big Time started, Dan Slott had a plan that resulted in some great Hobgoblin stories. This crazy event will change the way you look at Spider-Man. You may not completely like what happens but that's only because you have an affection for the characters involved. That's the result of good storytelling. If you didn't care about the characters, big changes or events would be meaningless.

During the build up in this issue, we do get to some insight from Peter Parker in terms of what his life has been about and where he wants to go. It makes everything that much more interesting. Slott keeps pushing Peter into new territories and keeps showing that there is another layer to Spider-Man that isn't often explored. What that all means after this issue will be something to see.

The art Richard Elson is great here. You can feel everything moving along smoothly. Whether it's a little encounter with a thief or a whispered conversation with Mary Jane (including a great flashback panel to the famous "Jackpot" scene), you feel yourself getting pulled into the issue. That cover is haunting as well after reading the issue.

You'll definitely want to read this issue a second time. You will see it in a completely different light.

The Bad

Am I thrilled with the twist here? Of course not. Spider-Man is at the top of my list of favorite characters. But we need to see our favorite characters go through the ringer once in a while to see how they overcome the situation, if that's even possible. Change can be good in comics. We have to assume this won't be forever but it sure will make some crazy and interesting stories. It is an extremely bold move. Many readers will hate what happens. You just have to look at it from the storytelling point of view. If Dan Slott can do this, what else could he do?

The Verdict

We've been waiting for months for some clues or insight into what Dan Slott has planned for the end of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and the beginning of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. We get a pretty big indication of what's coming here. It's a move I didn't see coming and that's a big credit to Dan Slott. He's taking a big chance here with the characters. There will be readers that are outraged but that's a sign that they do care about them. This is just another obstacle in the life of Spider-Man. It's a big one that may take a while to overcome. While that attempt is made, we will get some Spider-Man stories unlike any we've seen before. After fifty years, that's a big accomplishment. I am not thrilled with what happens here but I love what Dan Slott is doing. It's always been clear he's having a blast writing Spider-Man and you'll want to see what happens here and what will happen next. This is more than a mere stunt. This is the evolution of the character and big change that will set the stage for the next chapter of Spider-Man. Do yourself a favor and read this issue. Try not to spoil it for others, even if spoilers are already out there. Let them read it and be shocked for themselves. Years from now you'll ask others, "Do you remember where you were when you read AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #698?"

I think Slott is still messing with everyone, stirring the pot like crazy and watching what damage the waves create. Still, gutsy move on his part, and I respect him a lot for it.

If anyone is willing to do this, please do it over a pm. We don't need full spoilers here. It's really really best to read it for yourselves and I'd love if we could avoid full blown spoilers. At least for a day or two. Give everyone that is able, a chance to pick it up. There's also comiXology if you don't have a chance to make it to your local comic shop.

not to be lame, or pull a spoiler or anything, but http://www.comicvine.com/forums/off-topic/5/superior-spider-man-theory/704656/ that's kind of cool.

I thought it was good issue, and I have no complaints. As I stated in a previous thread, due to comments made by Slott, I am doubting that this is the status quo leading us into Superior Spider-Man. It is definitely the spring board, but we still have a few issues to go, and things will end in a flash of gold as we have heard.

So for those raging...chill out, and wait and see where it goes. We still have some story to go, and Slott has stated that he was not revealing who the Superior Spider-Man was until issue 1. I doubt this will be Spidey going forward, and if it is...well things will change back eventually.

.And the bolded is not really a spoiler, but might offer a hint at 698 so I blocked it out there=P

You're kidding right? This is one of the most unimaginative twists a writer can use. I feel like I've seen it done a million times. Enough so that I know it won't last.

Easy prediction, Peter breaks loose as Doc Ock and uses his super villain connections to hunt down Peter. In mean time Doc Ock finds out its not easy being Peter and Spidey as he suffers the worst day of his life trying to deal with Norman. Maybe not that last one, but the first seems obvious We already know Morbious escapes, so of course Peter as Doc Ock will as well..

That said I'm sure Dan has something else planned for 700. I still don't think it'll be all that creative, but it won't be this.

I don't like this. But I would be along for the ride if there was going to be an Amazing Spider-Man #701. Yes things will go back. But when a year? 2014 right before the next movie? Also this plot device has been done to death over and over....

"This absolutely changes everything"

No it doesn't.ow many times in the past has a villain swapped bodies with a hero? Off the top of my head I can name 5. Hell, wasn't that the whole plot of Secret Invasion, in many ways?

A lot of hype to absolutely minimal pay-off. How long could you possibly expect this to last?

he definitely has me hooked....I HAVE to see where this is going....Slott has said that the identity of the Superior Spider-man will still be a mystery when issue #1 hits the shelves so we can mostly assume that this won't last

I just want to see where the rest of the story goes. This one has me extremely intrigued and mad but at the same time, I want to see what happens next. It's like watching an accident that's getting ready to happen.  You know it'll be bad IF the accident actually occurs, but you can't take your eyes off of it in case somehow the accident is averted. I know that somehow Spidey is going to make it through and there will be a new Spidey title, but wow, I'm like I can't take my eyes off it!

Just an after thought, but since Doc Ock has all of Peter's memories what are the chances that he has been Peter since before 698 and has just been trying his best to act like him up till now?

I was just thinking about that and I don't think so...I mean it's a possibility but the earliest this could have happened is right after Ends of the Earth

I have to say that I did not see that coming, and despite other people being outraged over this, I already know that they'll return things to how they were (at least to some extent) eventually, so instead of freaking out I'm simply going to enjoy this for what it is. Slott hasn't disappointed me yet, and I can't wait to see where he takes this new status quo.

I'll admit I was floored. I didn't read the last story arc, due to being a poor-as-shit-student. I loved that I didn't see anything like this coming, but I gotta say, I don't know how I feel about it..... I'll have to cling to the sentiments G-Man's kid "it'll go back..."

Hate to sound cynical but eh this will get retconned or undone by the time Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out. It was a good issue and hope they run with this but ya know comic books stuff never really sticks.

yes actually, your right but im a bit confused cause he said that the lizard arent suppost to attack humans cause they peacefull,BUT your point has solid grounds cause he is much more ruthless and he essentialy leaves connors and morbius to rot in prison, but the latter issue of the goblin wars has him telling his famous jokes ,so im a bit confused.+ fricking slott better leave peter alive

This was a pretty shotty written issue to be honest. Slott makes a quick rundown of some key beats in Spiderman's history, and proceeds to give us some freaky Friday switch and pretending like its some diabolical master stroke? I'm not mad at the result per se, but he better have some magic cooked up for the rest of this arc. Because this was not a good issue. I really liked his run for the most part, but these last couple arcs have been coming up short for me.
