The Amazing Spider-Man #672 - Spider-Island, Part Six: Boss Battle

4

It's the end of Spider-Island is here and the big question is how will everything get resolved. Slott and Ramos pull out all the stops in the explosive finale. The story doesn't end here as there are repercussions that could follow.

The long running Spider-Man event comes to a conclusion. Almost everyone shows up to witness if this is the end of New York City in the Marvel Universe.

The Good

The battle we've been waiting for is finally here. The story has been so big that it feels like it's been more than six parts. It's nice to have a story with an 'event' feel involving a number of other characters yet readers of the other characters aren't necessarily forced to follow along.

There are many ways this story could end. Spider-Man and the heroes are facing a giant threat. We have a lot of firepower in terms of strength as well as plenty of brain power. We all know that simply trying to beat up the bad guys doesn't always work.

Spider-Island has opened the door to other issues. What is going to happen with Kaine? Why did Mary Jane develop spider-powers so late and what will that mean beyond this arc?

Slott does a great job tying everything together and Humberto Ramos' art frantically captures the chaos as all of New York City is a battleground.

The Bad

I have enjoyed the story but I've mentioned before that there were moments the story felt a little too long. Part of that is because of the various mini-series and one-shots (some of which I still haven't read). The ending was satisfactory but I am actually more interested in any repercussions that will result from this arc.

I am a fan of Humberto Ramos' art. His style has been great for all the craziness here. My only problem is sometimes his art gets a little...crazy. Sometimes characters' torsos feel a little off. But there is something about the way he draws panels packed full of heroes.

The Verdict

Spider-Island is over. That could be a good or a bad thing. The entire story had a big epic 'event' feel without forcing readers to check out a bunch of other titles or force readers of other titles to read this. Slot poured a lot of action into this arc and Ramos managed to keep pace by drawing all the chaotic scenes, even if there were some moments some of the characters felt a little off. Spider-Man has come a long way and it's been great seeing the other heroes get involved in a giant Spider-Man-focused story. The ending is nicely executed but opens the door for some exploration in some of the repercussions of this story. It's hard to imagine how Slott will top this huge storyline. He's set the bar pretty high for himself. My biggest fanboy wish is we'll get to see at least a little more of what we had on the cover.

One day I will read this arc and the tie ins. I missed the boat and was in the New 52 boat instead. I can only take one boat at a time.

They sorta explained why she got her powers so late in the comic, while talking to Mr. Fantastic at some point with The Thing and Spider-woman.

Same I missed the boat to, I missed all the Ultimate Spider-Man stuff with the new kid as well. Might take a look into this later if the story is good, but I just have a real dislike of the art.

I liked that someone actually gave Peter credit for saving the day...it's not to often that Pete gets credit like that

I gotta say, for my first event, I loved it! And right when I started to feel a bit overloaded by Spider-Island it was the final week and I got the ending! I read all the tie-ins and while some were unnecessary for the whole arc like Black Panther, Heroes for Hire, and Herc most were great even with a few surprises like Cloak & Dagger, a book I wish could continue as an ongoing series because it was great. This event also added Venom and Black Panther to my pulllist, while I wasn't happy with Panther's story in Spider-Island I got interested in what was going on in his word, simply put, Marvel succeeded in getting these new readers. The ending was awesome! And I can't wait to see what happens after this...what's next for Peter Parker and the rest of his gang.

the one thing I'm not to keen on is Kaine's attitude change....I guess you could call it character growth but this certainly isn't the same moody Kaine from the 90's

It began in Grim Hunt, not here.

Dan Slott actually redeemed The Other. It was always a bit awkwardly ignored, and now it's acknowledged in a way that lets it play out in a way it never could have originally.

They actually explained twice (well, more like danced around it for the PG crowd) why Mary Jane developed powers so late in the game.

Remember how they said she died in Spider-Man: Reign? Think the EXACT opposite of that.

I personally liked the lack of Peter's current girlfriend's in this issue... I think it was just a tease for all of fans who always want Spidey to be with MJ. It's just, been destined, since the very beginning.... Pete may be with whatsherface, but Spiderman's girlfriend will always be MJ.

@Raw_gutz: @sparty-dbq: I know they explained it (since I read the issue as well). I don't like to spoil things in reviews so I left it vague in order to give those that haven't read it a reason to actually want to read it.

Great issue, I liked how Peter saved the day amongst so many more powerful and smarter heroes, how MJ pointed out that what's so special is him, the relationship between Pete and Kaine. The moments between Pete and MJ were really nice. I hope that points towards a reblossoming of that relationship, although I do also like Carlie.

I really really enjoyed Spider-Island more than I expected. Before Spider-Island I didnt really read much of Spider-Man, not because I disliked him, but never had an interest. With Spider-Island I now fully follow Spider-Man as well as Venom (which is awesome btw). I enjoyed the ending and agree with what you said about repercussions.

Along with that I found that it this event was happening at the same time as Fear Itself when

Steve Rogers picked up his role again as Captain America which was kind of crucial in Fear Itself while he was the Spider-King in Spider-Island. Obviously they don't happen at the same time, but I'd like to see an explanation as too if that has/had an effect on other stories? etc

Edit: I dont know how to use the spoiler warning, sorry.

@Owie: Hey, Peter is one of the smartest characters in all of Marvel, if not one of the strongest (although he is much stronger than he gets credit for!).

Oh, no doubt he is very smart, but it's nice to see him be the one to come up with the solution when Mr. Fantastic is around.

"The ending was satisfactory but I am actually more interested in any repercussions that will result from this arc." <-- exactly how i feel. i love asm, and i love slott, but honestly this story was so so. but this issue proved to be exciting and i loved the ending, even though it was a cliche big boss type battle. still fun. definitely want to see where everythings going. i love ramos too, but after seeing so much of his stuff im reading for someone else to pick it up. perfect timing for that!

ALSO:

so stoked that MJ said she still loves pete! even if he didnt hear it. i feel bad cuz i like carlie a lot, but man i was pumped about that line. i really hope that leads where we all want it to...

Man, I've been thinking the whole arc through that it was going to lead to Peter's breakup with his current gf. See my review for why I think it won't happen.

I think the funniest thing about the pseudo-science of why MJ didn't transform is that it's a brick joke from the beginning of #SpiderIsland. Before Parker knows that it's a Jackal plot he thinks that he gave Callie spider-powers as an STD and then remarks that it didn't do anything to MJ despite all that fooling around.

I really, really loved this issue. It was a great finale for a very fun mini-event. Also loved the Venom 8 issue which comes directly before this. Man Dan Slott is definably one of the better Spider-Man writers. Plus I'm a huge Ramos fan, so that made me happy as well.

The issue had some of those huge 'oh shit'-happy-moments ( like the one where MJ mutters some words to Peter and he doesn't quite exactly catch it. I also love the fact that Dan Slott is really showing off Peter's intellect again. I kind of have been missing the genius in previous arcs, whereas this has become really important since Big Time, and comes back again here as well.

All in all: a great arc, great finish and plenty of possibilities for new and exiting stories to follow ( give us Scarlet Spider already! ).

I didn't read this thing and I'm glad. You thumb through it and still don't see the Spider-man of old. It's just 'I don't know much' guy. It's amazing everyone seems to have Spider-man's powers, yet I very much doubt they had the most obvious scenes with Peter Parker out of costume talking to Jonah and perhaps Jonah thinks this is his moment to find out who Spider-man is and Peter can make cracks at Jonah perhaps. That's why Spider-man ended at the Unmasking, so that nothing could happen after that unless you actually did that story instead of distracting readers with swerves and more promises. Who cares about this when we were offered the biggest thing ever? It doesn't seem like Spider-man anymore.

Liked it a lot, pretty deep. A lot of weirdness here too.

I don't feel to be too detailed about the pro's, this was my favorite Marvel event of the year.

It's not over though G-Man, 673 is the last ish, check the official checklist in the back of the issues.

My cons are about the same as yours. The issue was way too busy. All the tie-in characters there, and not so much the

fact that they were, but the fact that most of them did nothing more than say a few a words, or even less, and basically had no

importance nor reason for even being in the issue, namely the Immortal Weapons, Hercules (he's there, squint real hard), Cloak And Dagger,

and the Heroes For Hire (I got to give them props for paying attention to continuity here and not including Paladin and Misty as there's no way

they would have been reverted yet, good eye ). Where were Frog-Man, Squirrel Girl, and Spider-Kitty? Still it didn't bring the issue down enough

to choke it out for me. Verdict is about on par with yours either way, minus the forced buying of tie-ins as I don't subscribe to that logic

(and aside that the tie-ins were great in this anyways, stuff like I Love NY, Cloak & Dagger, Deadly Hands Of Kung-Fu, Herc, Venom,

and SI: Avengers all get recommended reads from me, some of the first mentioned 4.5-5 stars for that matter), imo.
