The Amazing Spider-Man #1 - Worldwide

4

Spider-Man is going global. What? That's right, check out the new era for Spidey.

Let me start by saying I really love Spider-Man. When I started reading comics, I got all the back issues and MARVEL TALES reprints. Usually when you see a review start off along these lines, you know there might be some trouble coming. I'll admit, when I first heard the idea of Spider-Man going global with high tech gadgets and vehicles, I wasn't sure what to expect. This obviously isn't the old Spider-Man many are used to. Maybe that's not necessarily a bad thing.

We come into the issue with some major changes having taken place. This is a result of Secret Wars, which obviously hasn't finished yet, and the established 8 month period that have passed since. That means we have time for all these changes to have occurred.

In some ways, the series does pick up from where we were before Secret Wars. Parker Industries may have suffered a little setback but Peter was on his way to establishing the business. Here, he's taken it farther than we could have imagined. It make sense that Peter could have a successful high tech business. This is the guy that created web shooters when he was fifteen. It's always been a matter of him finding the time and focus to use his brilliant mind. Before this issue went on sale, there were some comparing Peter to Tony Stark. That is actually specifically addressed in the issue. There are some clear differences between the two.

With Peter traveling the world and having "Spider-Man" as his bodyguard, there are some new possibilities. I'll be the first to say I miss the days of Peter swinging around New York, taking pictures of himself in action in order to sell them to the Daily Bugle to make ends meet. That's why we have our back issues, reprints, and trade paperbacks. Having Peter create new tech is allowing him to evolve. He's not the punk kid superhero he used to be. Although, if he's going to be allowed to evolve, it's still a shame Marvel won't let him "evolve" into a marriage.

There are some moments in the issue that will take some getting used to. Spider-Man developing tech for S.H.I.E.L.D. again makes sense but is still a little weird. There were some moments where the dialogue was a little too tongue in cheek. But this is Spider-Man we're talking about. He's the King of bad puns. Seeing the citizens of Shanghai completely adore him during a high speed chase felt like too much. It does show Spider-Man has been able to upgrade his public image as well.

We do have some new characters to go along with the new situations. There are several returning faces as well. This is definitely a new chapter in the life for Spider-Man. Dan Slott took Peter in a new direction with the Big Time story arc. This is just taking it even further. And while it seems like things have completely changed for Peter, I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to completely mess things up and lose it all. That's what the Parker Luck is waiting for. There is, of course, a crazy cliffhanger ending as well. Giuseppe Camuncoli does a fine job making things familiar mixed in with all the incredibly different surroundings. You can tell he's having fun with the issue.

There is the downside of the $5.99 price tag. In its defense, this is a really big oversized comic. Besides the main story, we get five back up stories featuring the other Spider-Man related characters such as Spider-Man 2099, Silk, Jessica Drew, the Web Warriors, Miles Morales, and the return of a recently seen villain. The first four stories are five pages with the last containing seven. These stories weren't completely necessary for this issue. It felt like a continuation of ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT MARVEL POINT ONE. The stories are great and get you excited for each individual series. It just may not have essential to force them upon Spider-Man readers. Also, there will be diehard Spider-Man fans that simply do not want a change on this level.

The Amazing Spider-Man is back. Dan Slott is once again moving Spider-Man forward in a new direction rather than fall back on the same old stories we've seen many many times. The changes are pretty big and will definitely take some getting used to. It's always nice to see a publisher allow characters to grow and change instead of keeping them locked in the same status quo forever. While some of the changes may be questionable, I'm definitely on board to see where it all goes. Giuseppe Camuncoli's art captures the new direction nicely. We have new faces to go along with the new locations as well as a return of many and some unexpected characters. We're off to an interesting new start. This may not be the Spider-Man you're used to but you'll definitely want to see what happens next. With Dan Slott, you never know what he has up his sleeves. This is Spider-Man and Peter Parker living up to their full potential.

Honestly I'm all for Peter getting his marriage with MJ back but I don't understand why people are complaining about Peter being a ceo of his own company now. He is still evolving as a character just in a different direction than the married family man we all expected. And while again I would have no problem with OMD just being reversed I'm still perfectly okay with this new direction for spiderman and I personally can't wait to see where it leads

This was a great issue honestly, excellent start. It's really satisfying to see Peter stepping up and using his intellect. Just from this one issue, we can see him doing more than he ever did in years. The art is also pretty great.

Can't wait for the #2!

"This is Spider-Man and Peter Parker living up to their full potential." Perfectly sums up what excites me about this series.

Yeah, man.

AMAZING issue! Loved seeing one of my favorite childhood heroes get demolished and Iron Manized. Dan Slott is so perfectly talented in ruining Spiderman, it's unbelievable. Can't wait til the next issue so I can see Marvel's most iconic and loved superhero get ruined in 1080p, 60-frames per page action. OMG 10/10 would complain about again.

@exaffect: I'm a die hard spidey fan, and this was a really great start, also if you liked Superior Spider-Man like I did, there is something in this issue regarding that in a big way but I wont spoil it. I really recommend the issue!

Not all changes are positive, especially one which turns Peter into Iron Man 2.0.

Also, it has an awful writer. Dan Slott must get off the book.

This is the only Spider title I really want to see remade. The Spider-Clones as a team was amazing. Ben was the leader/moral compass, Jessica was the soldier/tactician and Kaine was the muscle/wild card. It was the best team make up ever! In my opinion this team is more interesting than the Web Warriors.

@g_man

And while it seems like things have completely changed for Peter, I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to completely mess things up and lose it all. That's what the Parker Luck is waiting for.

I think we are all waiting for it to happen. Which means when it does, I hope Slott does it in a creative way, which doesn't reek too much *cough OMD/BND cough*

As for issue, I liked it alot. Art is good, hopefully no Ramos, and while his company does smell of Tony Stark, Peter's humor and idiosyncrasy has remained so far, in fact I think that Slott dialed it up just to remind skeptics- Hey, its Peter Parker under all the success and tech.

His moral compass hasn't gone south either, and I think Slott dialed that aspect up too, for the same reason. The whole Tony Stark comparison and Peter's pay issue, combined with his charity felt to synchronized to be co-incidence. Although personally I think its kinda silly. Peter can limit his pay all he wants, him making Tech for Shield, and having multiple headquarters pretty much means he can pay himself minimum wage and still have a lifestyle better than the vast majority of Americans. The whole "I capped my Pay at Medium Management level", just sounds like overcompensating.

But 4 stars sounds bout right.

Not to sure where all this hate is coming from, I was actually not to be big of a fan for the Superior series and the last story (Spiral) before Secret Wars started, was horrible.

But I actually liked this 1st issue. Sure it wasn't perfect, Dock Ock robot? The villain was a bit meh, Zodiac? But the new approach on what Peter's trying to do and how he still has his goofy tendencies was refreshing and interesting. I'm definitely going to read the next issue.

I'm....not sure what to make of this. I don't have an issue with Peter having his own company, but the whole jetsetting thing throws me off. And the glowing suit looks dumb. Still, at least it's still Peter in there, goofiness and all

Pros: Art is ten times better than Ramos'

Cons: No Substance to the Story.
Peter Parker is the new Bruce Wayne.
Peter has gadgets that gets him out of any situation
Spider-Moblie

Peter David's Short Story has way more substance then the oversized "amazing" storyline.

Well... people ask how this happened? Why are you surprised? Black Cat gets punched once and decides to go off and become some psychopath. Set-up or being in character never get in Slott's way of telling a story. His problem is, he had such luck with superior spider-man that he's constantly going for the shock factor which gets old. I can't tell you if I like this book or not. I'm hopeful Black Cat working with Silk is a way of bringing her back to the way she used to be.

@immolation: It is pretty dumb. Mostly because if people have the intelligence to compare Peter to Stark, and everyone knew that Stark and Iron Man turned out to be the same person...

Anyways, it already seems better than the pre-Secret Wars run. Pity Black Cat is still evil for stupid reasons, though.

did not like the price tag AT ALL. remember #600 was $5 and over a hundred pages? where did that marvel go? also, you literally just paid basically 5 page ads for their other books, except for the last extra story. the ASM story is still about the same length as a normal book. i definitely feel cheated.

also, gay wedding really? i get that theyre trying to be inclusive but max was never gay in any of the earlier comics. it felt REALLY pushed as another "marvel can be inclusive too!" agenda. did not like.

overall, willing to see where this goes as a die hard spidey fan, but im also missing poor photographer pete.

also, where is secret wars in all this? is this 616 pete or what?
