All-Star Western #9 - Vengeance in the Big Easy; The King of Carnival

4

The latest issue of All-Star marks the return of a character we haven't seen since the launch of the end of the JONAH HEX series.

The Good

Even though this issue is a tie-in to the 'Night of the Owls' cross over, by the time you reach the final page you'll find that Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have brought us one step closer to their former JONAH HEX series; and it's great. The introduction of a character we've seen before, but haven't yet seen since the start of ALL-STAR is really great. It was certainly the highlight of the issue for me. The issue opens with Cinnamon and Nighthawk who pop in just in time to save Jonah Hex and Arkham. It's great to see these two characters get some panel time and to see them work together as a team. They have some really fun, lighthearted banter and it was the perfect balance to bring to a book that has (as of late) been mainly about Jonah Hex. Great to see other old-Gotham characters get a bit of spotlight.

If you have read all the tie-ins to 'Night of the Owls,' you may recognize the talon that appears in this issue. It's interesting to incorporate her character because it brings about a sense of continuity between the All-Star book and the rest of the Batman titles. Although you likely won't need all the tie-in books to grasp what's happening in this story arc, you do get some fresh information and an interesting perspective into the court through this issue. What is the relationship between the Wayne family and the Court? It may have been closer than we originally imagined. It's pretty interesting.

Moritat knocks it out of the park again -- his gritty style is complimentary to Gray and Palmiotti's story: they are a perfect combination.

The Bad

Although it's the first appearance of the Talon, it was very brief. I thought it would have been good to see more of her, but this is just the beginning. It will be interesting to see how much the creative team integrates her character into their story.

The Verdict

Overall a solid issue from the creative team. The introduction of a well known character that has been missing since the end of the JONAH HEX series was the icing on the cake for me; I thought it was fantastic to see them bring this indicidual back and I look forward to seeing how she adds to the dynamic of the story Grap and Palmiotti and trying to tell. Really pretty art; Moritat does a great job. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the Talon has in store for Hex and if there is a relationship between her and another Talon we've seen in a different story.

The Talon part seemed a bit forced and everything with August 7 wrapped up too quickly. I feel like this was one of the weaker issues in this series.

@longbowhunter: Totally agree. Just picked this up with #7 & #8. #7 was ok. #8 was the best. #9 thought would be one of the better Court of Owls issues to expand the history or some kind of good tie in with Batman. **

@HempKnight757: Yeah I was pretty bummed. Looks like we'll see more of this Talon in following issues. I'd have liked to see this issue dedicated to Old Gotham and the Courts beginnings.

I would highly recommend it and would mark it as one of the overall + elements of the relaunch... I was picking up a majority of DC books pre-launch, but not Jonah Hex, just because I felt it was going to be too hard to pull the full picture... like many others, I jumped onto the book with #1, it has held a much higher readership since then and has retained its high praise from before the New 52... I've enjoyed it so much that now I'm going back to start at #1 from the Hex series as well.

This issue had nothing to do with the Night of The Owls. The female Talon shows up and is gone. You don't know who the Talon is like the other tie-in show or where she came from. This was a pointless tie-in issue for Night of The Owls. I had no idea what was going on because I haven't read the other All-Star issues.

Wait, what are you talking about? I read all the other Night of the Owls stuff, and I haven't seen hide nor feather of this Talon anywhere else. And why is it THIS that suggests the Waynes and the Court of Owls have a deeper connection? The main Court of Owls story in the main Batman book has constantly been driving home the point that the two are deeply connected.

I doubt it, the Talons are simply tools to the Court. They're street urchins who's wills have been broken, while what we've seen of the Court themselves is that they all fancy themselves sophisticated aristocrats. They're far above the Talons they command, and the idea of Talons becoming Court members would completely go against that. Not to mention that we already know Talons are cryogenically frozen when they're retired.

I think what's going on overall is a bit better. Instead of one standalone story, this has set up a future arc or more for Jonah Hex to battle The Court of Owls, and for the series to explore the history.

It set this series up to continue exploring the history of The Court of Owls. True it technically wasn't 'directly' related to the specific 'event' known as 'Night of the Owls,' but it's thematically connected, and technically it explores history that, in some way, sets up the Night of the Owls to happen in the distant present. Far from pointless, the way the Talon got away lets you know that it wasn't just a simple one-shot tie-in, Jonah Hex will continue to encounter The Court of Owls, that this series will be telling a longer tale of The Court of Owls actually SET in the past, as opposed to just having flashbacks.

Didn't you read that it was already revealed that the entire thing was revenge organized by the Cobblepot family. The next big story is about the armies of Cobblepot basically walking in and taking over Gotham. Its going to be called "March of the Penguins".

Sorry, couldn't resist.

@HempKnight757: My point was that instead of being a one-time tie into The Court of Owls, this was the setup for an entire arc tying into The Court of Owls.
