All-New X-Men #9

5

The X-Men from the past continue to adjust to the present under Kitty Pryde's command but Mystique and Sabretooth on the cover spell bad news.

The Good

This comic continues to be a joy with each and every issue. Seeing the younger versions of the original X-Men training with Kitty Pryde is wonderful. It's an eye opener seeing just how much has changed in the X-Men universe since they first put on costumes. In many ways it's as if we're seeing them at this stage for the first time. They're already undergoing changes by being exposed to their new surroundings. It's difficult not to think about how this overall story with the young X-Men has to end but it's been a blast seeing the developments unfold.

It's not just about the team adjusting to the new time period. There also appears to be possible major changes happening the longer they stay in the present. If that wasn't bad enough, we also have Mystique and Sabretooth unleashing their latest plan. Because it's happening in this title, we can only assume it's going to be bad news for all the characters here.

ALL-NEW X-MEN is more than a simply X-Men time travel story. It's also a way to reflect on the past events that have shaped this corner of the Marvel universe. Seeing outside events creep into this title is fascinating. And of course we get an ending touched on in another issue that will make fans of continuity jump for joy. What will happen next is going to be nuts.

Stuart Immonen makes his return and it's as if he was never gone. We've seen so many great artists on X-Men titles in the past and it would be weird to think of someone else handling the art. David Marquez did do a great job but this feels like it's Brian Bendis and Stuart Immonen's book.

The Bad

The solicit mentions the team getting new costumes. I didn't see any. I assume with the twice-a-month shipping the solicits can easily change. It's a minor concern as I sort of like them in their classic costumes.

There does seem to be a need for a firm sit down to determine who exactly is leading the team. I imagine this is something we'll see explored more in future issues.

The Verdict

I can't get enough of ALL-NEW X-MEN. Stuart Immonent returns and we get to see the team in action under Kitty Pryde's guidance. Seeing the X-Men from the past try to adjust to today is a gives an interesting perspective on just how much the X-Men comics have changed. We're still seeing the young X-Men adjust to the present but there are huge seeds being planted that will kick the series into high gear. With Mystique and Sabretooth hatching a new scheme and the incident that happens at the end, next issue will give those clamoring for more action something to chew on.

It is better than bad certainly. But 9 issues in and I just can't. shake. the. feeling. that. everything. is. moving. so. sloooowwwww.

It picks up some here but to me Uncanny X-Men has had more going on in three issues than All New X-Men has in 9. I'm going to keep reading it however, as it isn't bad, i just hope I get some locomotion soon. Looks like I might.

I picked up Bendis' Uncanny X-Men and loved it, and the other Marvel title that has peaked my interest has been this book, is it worth picking up espcially since it will have Uncanny X-men in it?

I liked this issue. I like this series as well. My only minor gripe is the whole series thus far has felt like one big story arc, is that bad? not necessarily. I understand why Bendis is writing this as he is, its all about the adjustment: a team of youngsters adjusting to a new world, destiny and new Headmasters. But i think that in the next few issues we really need to have a set new story arc, or atleast some direction to where the series is going. Like I said minor gripe but it feels the exposition has lasted 9 issues. 4/5 for me for this issue. I love Kitty in this book.

Yeah, the slow pace is really holding this book back from being great imo. I think after issue 10, i might just borrow upcoming issues from someone else.

I've long held the opinion that if you read UXM, you should be reading ANXM as well (and vice-versa). The entire reason the O5 were brought to the future was to confront present-day Cyclops, so the books are going to run parallel to each other and as revealed in the last issues of both, they're going to be interesting for the second time.

So in short - yes, I'd recommend reading both if you can.

This book is good, but it is definitely moving too slow. So far in 9 issues, the original x-men have come to the future and talked to people. I guess what's made that so good is that we all love to see these interactions between the old x-men and today's x-men. But seriously, it feels like only 1 thing happens in every book.

Personally I'm loving the slow build due to the simple fact that makes us truely know the younger versions, and understand how the modern versions have come to be. It will pick up as time goes on, just enjoy the ride, and take it all in.

Bendis said the costumes changes have been delayed so that they coincide with the 50th anniversary celebrations. The solicits are out of date.

Bendis just addressed this on his Tumblr:

I know I said they were going to get new costumes in issue nine of all new but we decided with the 50th anniversary of all things X coming up that that was a much better place to unveil them. did I mentioned that our plans for the 50th anniversary of the X-Men be bat sh!t crazy? well they is!

Three words:

F-ing. Right.

Also, I hope Emma and Lady Mastermind don't share a scene together, because I can tell you now, I probably won't be able to tell them apart. Speaking of which, they just let her wear her costume in prison?

I am very split with Mystique's portrayal. She has been a lot of things but uncaring towards mutants is not one of them. I know that this issue addresses it a bit but there better be a good reason for this change. She mentioned Xavier but I never thought that he had that big of an impact on her.

At least she is not Wolverine's scratching post...

High five on that good sir. It would be even better if young Beast turned on old beast. This is such a great Comic. I love x-men. It is at its best when it's working on relationships among all the mutants. Can't get enough of that X-men soap opera.

I wonder if Jean Grey has been using her power to read the minds of other characters outside of X-men in the Marvel Universe.

On page 3, it looks like Superior Spider-Man is swinging by and in the next panel Jean Grey has a sort of mind flash. Do you think it's possible she read Superior Spidy's mind and knows his secret identity?

Hardly, as this was inside the Danger Room and Spidey was a simulation.

Loved the issue, can't really see it as slow-moving, I think its just the right pace for a big story. Bendis just needs to deliver a second and third part that justifies a longer build-up.

It's not moving slow, it's building up, wich I belive in this series is really necesary.

Uncanny doesn't have that problem.

This was definitely one of the issues I enjoyed the most, more or less because of how Kitty Pryde put Jean Grey in her place. It was refreshing to see because let's be honest, Jean has always been put on a pedestal when it came to writing her, many might disagree with me because of how many times she had died, but that was because writers had nothing else to do with her. However, it's nice to see that characters in the series aren't the biggest fan of having this Jean Grey in their reality, and like how the original 616-Jean Grey would use her powers for personal gain no one would say anything about it, but now it's refreshing to see Kitty put her in the place.

It was also very enjoyable to see Mystique setting up her Brotherhood of Mutants, I'm not 100% what her actual motives are. I don't see them just becoming "rich" and getting away from everything, she's too devious for that. I love seeing that we got Regan back into the picture, she was always my favourite Mastermind! It was also nice seeing Sabertooth, excited to see who else they'll be recruiting, maybe a young Scott?

Another five here!

I really like how Angel goes to old Hank to ask him what exactly is this "mutant genocide" about, and his excuse is very pathetic, specially since Scott is also publicy saying that they will protect humans too, as long as they aren't attacking mutants.

Angel and Scott are the ones with the more logic reactions here, and the ones I'm liking more. Jean needs A HUGE LOT of face slapping from Kitty so she learns a thing or two about morals and how to not mind-wipe a good friend so he has no own will, or how she shouldn't sneak into here boyfriend's head just because she can.

I've said this a dozen times now, but I miss old Hank before he became an hypocrite (and a clever monkey like other thousands).

@IllyanaRasputin: I don't think young Scott will want to stay with Mystique's crew once he discovers what they're REALLY up to and what really goes on in there. He's just too idealistic for that.

I like the slow pace of this book, I find it refreshing. Though I totally understand why it could be frustrating.

Overall, I agree with the review; this book is one of my favourites of the Marvel Now! initiative.

I thought the exact same thing (on both points).

I am really enjoying the synchronicity between this and Uncanny. Different feels, but they work well together.

I think the events of Uncanny will heavily impact how the young X-men react. Angel challenged Beast, but in the end Old/Present Scott is proving that Beast may not fully be wrong. I don't feel this series is moving too slow like others have said. I think it is a perfect build up for this moment they showed on the last page. It will show the young X-men holy crap Old Scott only desires to prove himself right.

So I finally broke down and decided I wanted to read this book badly enough to not buy some other stuff I'd intended to use that money for...

And I've quite enjoyed it. For someone who hasn't read much of any pre-NOW Marvel (X-Force aside), it's interesting getting a snapshot of the X-Men's origins while also seeing where mutantkind stands now. Also, I love Kitty. She is by far my favorite character in this book thus far.

But it is indeed slow. I just did a marathon read of the entire series and I can't imagine having had to wait week after week between those small segments. It's the sort of story that will absolutely read better in trade. But I figured, I'm reading UXM, there's crossover, so maybe I'm missing part of the story? Well, yes and no. I think Bendis does a good job of showing the other side of the coin that he's showing in UXM. This provides a far more holistic view of the situation for sure. But I don't feel like there's anything thus far which would've been horrible to miss had I opted to just stick with UXM. An interesting, beautifully-drawn story, sure. But in terms of its tie-in with UXM specifically? By no means required.

I will, however, say that anyone reading this should be reading UXM.

I thought Mystique's speech was way off as well; 'Dude' and the like. I mean really, since when did Mystique talk like that?!
