All-New X-Men #8

4

Two encounters in one issue! The young X-Men meet HYDRA and the Avengers.

The Good

We've had mixed situations with the younger X-Men from the past meeting their current selves. In this issue, we get to see what happens when Angel meets Angel. The current Angel is not the man he used to be. After recent events in Rick Remender's UNCANNY X-FORCE, he's essentially been reborn. You can imagine what the younger version must think when trying to talk to him.

The conversation is cut short as the two flying Angels come across an attack by HYDRA. The older Angel may have been reborn but he still has the skills to deal with this sort of situation a little better. The younger one...we'll see.

On top of this encounter, the Avengers also become aware of the younger X-Men's presence. Especially for someone like Captain America, this is going to be a mess. Brian Bendis handles all these situations with grace. This is why I'm loving this series so much. Month after month I'm surprised at how much I enjoy the idea of the X-Men from the past trying to deal with everything going on in the present.

And of course there's a major turn of events towards the end. If people aren't already talking about this, they soon will be!

David Marquez does a remarkable job on the art. If Stuart Immonen ever needs time off to keep up with the twice-a-month schedule, let's hope Marquez is on their speed dial. Even the subtle touches of young and present Angel flying side by side is something to admire. Extra care and caution needs to be taken when drawing the different aged characters.

The Bad

If anything, the story felt like it flew by. That could be due to getting sucked into the story and action. The battles and encounters felt like they happened too quickly. Maybe I just wanted to see more and more. We got some great and hilarious scenes. There is a big development at the end but there wasn't anything else truly major that happened.

The Verdict

ALL-NEW X-MEN continues to be one of my favorite Marvel NOW! titles. Even when an issue feels like there isn't an incredible amount that happens, you'll find yourself hanging onto every panel and piece of dialogue. I hate to think that at some point, this series has to come to an end. We can't have the young X-Men around forever. That's part of what makes everything so volatile. There's simply no telling what might happen next. Bendis keeps delivering issue after issue and David Marquez does a great job depicting all the characters, young and old. This is indeed a series I'm extremely thankful for the twice-a-month schedule. I can't get enough.

I felt it was stupid having Hydra attack the Avengers' tower. I don't think an organization like theirs would have done that in the open like that. Bendis could have found another way to place both Angels in a fight.

Now, don't get mad everybody, but I gave this one 5 STARs. Ha! I seriously loved this issue. The interaction between the two Angels was amazingly well done and intriguing. Kitty and Bobby were so funny. Bendis is doing a great job with this comic.

I really dig this series but this wasnt one of my favorite issues. Like G-man said it flew by and although I liked Kitty and Iceman's impersonations of Beast and Cap, as well as young Angels completely truthful warranted breakdown at the end I was left wanting more from this issue.

I like how bad-ass young Cyclops is every issue more and more. Even Wolverine is starting to apreciate it.

I liked the Kitty and Iceman conversation, and they got some good point, while doing it sarcastically, but anyway they said it: Beast did this for his own egotistical reasons risking the whole universe just because he was going to die anyway and he didn't care at all. Hank risked commiting universe-cide (not to mention the millions he already killed just because Steve Rogers told him to do it and how fine he was about that) and still he thinks he's some sort of superior moral voice and that Scott is a bad guy... HYPOCRITE. I miss so much when Hank was a good character to read and not a boring hypocrite another-among-so-many intelligent gorilla...

I liked how Jean reminded that again about lecturing her on moral elections BUT I don't like what Jean is doing, I'm disliking her more and more every issue... and they decided she was going to be team leader? really? good luck with her leading them/forcing them to do whatever she wants...

This is exactly what I thought it was going to be. Bendis is rocking right now on both X-Men titles. I thought I'd miss him on Avengers, but Remender and Hickman are tearing it up there as well. I haven't like the X-Men for a few years now, but with Bendis 2 titles, and Wolverine and the X-Men it's just so great. I'm happy every week from Marvel right now. The way it's going, I'm going to have to be dropping some DC titles just because of the money flow. Make Mine Marvel.

I would've given this the same rating but for a different reason. The Angel and Angel scenes were good but I wish it had gone on longer.

I don't see how it's bad that a comic is making you want more? I mean, I want a comic to give me that feeling of wanting more as it means I'm enjoyed it enough to want the next one.

I haven't enjoyed a Bendis book as much as this in a long time. He's really bringing the baby X-folk to life, and I was glad to see some focus on Warren: it's easy for Scott and Jean to dominate this situation, and I hope we get more Hank and Bobby in the near future, too.

The whole concept of bringing the X-babies forward has panned out extremely well, and has really refreshed Marvel's mutant line.

I think the structure is useful in keeping Bendis from his default gritty street-driven tales, which has become a little wearisome (cough, Age of Ultron, cough). I'm finding All New to be some of his most enjoyable Marvel work.

And something I'd like to see is a certain frosty school teacher somehow recruited to help Jean handle her new-found powers. That would be fairly awesome on several levels.

I concur on Cykes! He's starting to show why he was placed in charged in the first place!

Second on Kitty and Bobby calling Hank out on his hypocrisy. Loved seeing Steve getting silenced and being sent on his way!

As for Jean...I would keep a CLOSE eye on her. Those last few panels were rather foreboding.

The final 3 or 4 panels gave me shivers.

I loved the whole issue.... especially the 'conversation' between Kitty and Ice... but Jean's parting quote just made me smile, put down the book, and think "can't wait to see where this goes!".

This issue was pretty, really I love it. especially the part when Kitty and Iceman is impersonating Cap and Hank.

I love the progress of Cycke, just like the old times. The big, brave leader. Im really looking forward on confrontation between young and old cyke.

The only part I hate is the ending, I know the changes in Jean was mostly because of time shock. But she don't have to act like that and use her TP just like that. But whatever, I'm not dropping this book. I hate to admit it but Bendis is writing it pretty good. Not unlike....err UXM.

I haven't had a chance to read this yet, hope to pick it up Wednesday. Is it too much to hope that eventually the Young X-men will all eventually side with Old Man Cyke? I don't see why he his being villainized at all. Jean Grey did terrible things and was welcomed back and loved. Cyclops does what he has to for mutanity and he is crucified for it. Wolverine, up until recently, was a freaking assassin that led a group to murder people for Christ's sake! Please explain why Cyclops was deemed awful.

In the next issue if what Jean did to warren isn't a huge deal I then I think all the West Chester X-Men are spineless. They need to learn to take a damn stand for once.
