All-New X-Men #6

5

The action heats up as the young X-Men from the past continue to adjust to being in the present/their future. They're about to find out how dangerous the world is today.

The Good

I like the X-Men. A lot. I've been reading the comics for a long time. If you think back to everything that has happened, especially since GIANT-SIZE X-MEN, we've seen plenty of crazy stories. Time travel, alternate realities and different versions of characters is nothing new for the mutants. The idea of the original X-Men from the past being brought to the future seems like just another typical X-Men plotline. Yet with each issue crafted by Brian Michael Bendis, I become more and more in love with the idea.

Seeing the innocence of the younger X-Men is a harsh contrast to the current scene in X-Men comics. It's a wonder they all didn't immediately start crying and beg older Beast to send them back to their time. That's part of the fun of the series, seeing the young mutants experience today's events for the first time. Seeing how they react to discovering their fates is exciting and heartbreaking at the same time.

Which leads us to Jean Grey. I won't deny being a big Jean Grey fan. This may not be the Jean Grey we were looking for but there is something the innocence of her younger self. We've seen her grow into a powerful mutant. With these stories, that evolution has jumpstarted a bit. She's taking her place as a stronger character at a younger age now. It was her decision to push for staying in this time.

The other great aspect (for me) is having Kitty Pryde step forward to work with these kids. I'm also a big Kitty fan. She is another example of a character that has come a long way. Too often what she's about is overlooked (like the fact that she's a trained ninja). It's going to be great to see how her involvement with the squad plays out.

You'll probably notice that we have some different art here. With the twice-monthly shipping schedule, it makes sense that Stuart Immonen will take some issues off to accomodate this schedule. David Marquez is a great choice to do the next three issues. If you've seen his art on ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN, you know what he's capable of. He captures the innocence of the younger characters and makes them distinctly different from their current day counterparts. Adding to this (and also ushering in some consistency) is Marte Gracia's colors. And I know reviewers don't often mention the letterers but Cory Petit really should be commended for the lettering he had to do in this issue. When you see a certain scene with Jean and Kitty, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The Bad

This series uses a lot of double page spreads. The panels tend to go across the pages. It's a common thing in many Bendis books. There was a couple times I missed the fact that this was happening as the crease between pages hid the fact. Not a huge deal but it lead to re-reading a couple panels over again in the correct order once I realized.

The Verdict

It's funny to think back that some people had concerns over Brian Michael Bendis taking over some X-Men books. This has become one of my favorite Marvel NOW! titles. I have no idea how long the concept of the X-Men fro the past being in the present will last but I am sure going to enjoy the hell out of it while it lasts. In many ways it's like seeing the characters experience things all over again for the first time. The fact that the Marvel Universe and the X-Men's corner of it has changed so much makes it all that much more fascinating. David Marquez jumps on the series for the next three issues and it's a welcomed sight to see his art here. Along with Marte Gracia's colors, we get great visuals with the suspense of the story. Even though the series is still setting things up for the young mutants, this is what I want to see. The interaction with others and seeing their reactions is what is selling me on this. We don't have any of the present day Cyclops story but that is totally fine with me. This is a series I'm glad comes out twice a month. Having to wait a full month until the next issue would be too much.

GIANT-SIZE X-MEN was the first comic i ever read, my uncle bought it was he was a kid and kept it hidden for years, i can proudly say that is the comic that got me into comics. i'm liking the direction of this book, i was skeptical at first but the more i read the more the more i want to read. i'm wonder though, if the X-kids go back to their own time will the things they've seen in the future change who they are/were in the stories that happened between the time they were taken and the current point in time? or will it create some sorta alternate universe?

btw i love the Bachalo Generation X cover, had no idea what it was about til i saw the 50 years tag at the top

I love this series, but it is pretty clear Bendis hates wolverine. He has insisted on having the character act like a childish dick for the entire series, ignoring the fact that the character is nothing like that in "Wolverine and the X-men" and was most certainly not like that in the fantastic "Uncanny X-Force". Writing wolverine like that should be beneath him, and disrespects the fantastic work very talented writers are doing with the character today.

@garlyle: Considering he's been using Wolverine in pretty much everything he's written for over a decade now, I don't think Bendis hates him.

Same here, my dad kept a copy for years, then gave it to me for my 7th birthday. Bendis is nailing this series, and I love what he's doing with the characters. I too am a huge Jean Grey fan, and it's great seeing the young team in this very different present. Makes you realize just how far the team has come since then.

Tony, you mean the pannels where Storm presents herself right? I was confused on those ones.

The issue was good, but I still don't like the need everyone has to villianize Scott, including his younger self (stripping the leadership and giving it to Grey is another step on that direction). I was glad to see the young one blasting Wolverine, it was like "yeah! stop messing with the poor kid! take that hypocrite!!"

I'm looking forward for next issue as that villian at the end would be very dangeous for a young and unprepared x-man.

PS: Everytime they mention the original 5 being 12 years old I'm surprised. Even if this issue they do look younger (great art btw), I still imagine them with at least 15-16.

Perhaps Bendis can break Jean out of the boring, Mary Sue mold she inhabits that makes me despise her character (though the only person to do that is Morrison, and he achieved it by making her a bitchy demigod that got her character defining moment in death).

On the flip side, I'm psyched for Kitty stepping up more as Xavier's replacement. Hoping we'll eventually see Wolverine wise up and leave the school in her capable hands.

Poor young Scott, kid's still in his socially awkward loner stage and now he's got everyone thinking he's some monster. Stay strong you scrawny fool!

Yeah, you can barely see the edge of panels in between pages. There was one with Cyclops and Wolverine too I think.

This book is awesome. I'm not a huge Bendis fan, but I have to say that he's doing a lot better than I imagined. In fact, I think this is the best X-Men book in years. Great stuff.

My mistake was to look at the cover of ANXM #7 before reading this... The reveal at the end was not all that shocking for me. I do like the Kitty/Jean dynamic so far.

This book is the must read book for X-men fans right now. I am not sure where this is all headed, but I am enjoying the ride for now. However, anyone else think it was weird that Students at the school wear suits, in the cafeteria, and the teachers wear spandex? I understand wearing a uniform in battle, but when teaching!? Doesn't Salem Center have a Kohl's?

Also, I hope Generation X comes to Comixology soon...

This series just isn't working for me. I'm just bored when I read this book. I'm really hoping it will pick up for me. Something else that bothered me about this issue and maybe it was just the batch that mine was in but the paper stock seemed really low quality compared to previous issues and the colours towards the end of the book really grainy. Particularly on Ororo.

It's also annoying me that not one character thinks Scott snapping was understandable. That doesn't mean the people have to agree with what he did but him losing it after the life he led just makes sense. He was an orphan that was abused psychologically most of his life and when he got taken in by Xavier, who he trusted, he too messed with his mind. Scott was always going to snap.

Two things I laughed out at. When Jean was hearing all the thoughts I for some reason decided to read them and laughed at that jab at Maggot. I also laughed at Scott on the cover of Rolling Stones magazine for the simple fact that I still think that crossing your arms symbol is cheesy as can be.

But throughout this it seems especially at the conclusion I'm curious as to the direction that Young Scott will go in.

Considering this book comes with a free digital copy (or rather, the redemption code for the digital copy comes with a free printout), the crease in double page spreads is hardly a valid complaint. A book this gorgeous is made to be read on a high resolution tablet (I would say an iPad or similar device is an essential investment for ever comic reader today).

The double pages have been annoying, and not just in this issue. I have to give a shout out to the artist, because he's done a great job filling in for Immonen here, but he also did the same great job for Sara Pichelli in Ultimate Spidey. This guy is a solid pinch hitter, and his style has matched well with both the artists he filled in for.

Do we have any guesses as to who Mystique was speaking with? I find Wolverine & The X-Men utterly unreadable and thought maybe the character had cropped up in that comic. If not, I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

By my best guess, because of the "sliding timeline," the original X-Men are from 2000, maybe 2001.

Pretty sure you had bottled water then, Scott. It's not a new thing.

I don't have have problem them villainizing adult Scott but geez leave the young one alone. Also taking the leadership away from him is really messed up. Ya Smart move alienate the kid further and see if you get the last thing you want from him. I'd like to see him come out on top of this. Another good issue. I'm still really surprised I'm liking this series.

I too have been reading X-Men my whole life, since 1978, and am also very suprised to be enjoying this current storyline. It almost feels to me that the creative powers that be heard the numerous voices complaining about the handling Cyclops character in more recent stories, and invented this "past v. current" Cyclops to explore this very issue.Well played thus far. My only complaint, agreeing with an earlier post, is the handling of Wolverine. He is written way too simplistically with no appreciation for the complexity of his character. He just comes across as a douche. Hopefully this will shift.

I have to agree with the G-Man on this Book.

Bendis really knows the characters well and has taking them back to a level of greatness - The X-Men haven't been this good since Byrne and Claremont. What seemed like such a simple premise is proving a lot more interesting that anyone could have guessed. The X-Men are essentially BACK! into the Future! The characterizations are just really SPOT ON! You get a real sense that the current X-Men are so far removed from who they used to be - they should be despised (especially Cyclops). and the Original X-Men are back every bit as green and idealistic as they ever were trying to live up to Professor X's dream! I don't even think I can't accurately describe just how well written this book is - so everyone should do themselves a favor and ..

READ THIS BOOK!
