All-New Invaders #1 - Gods and Soldiers, Part 1

4

Why are the Invaders getting back together? Find out in this issue.

The Good

It almost seems like a crazy idea for Captain America, Bucky/Winter Soldier, Namor and Jim Hammond/Human Torch to get back together. Of course, James Robinson comes up with a reason why.

The Invaders always felt like an old concept. We've seen past attempts to revive the idea but it never really seemed to work. If you read the recent Marvel POINT ONE issue, you know there's a new threat on the board by the name of Tanalth. She's a Kree warrior that Cap and company will not want to mess with. But we know they won't have a choice.

In this issue we find out what Jim Hammond's been up to. He's always been a fascinating character that's been underused. Seeing how he and the others are connected in this current "mission" is an interesting idea and makes sense that it's never been brought up before.

Steve Pugh's art is cool to see. I never imagined I'd see Jim Hammond in action like this. We get to see a lot of fire and Guru-eFX goes all out in bringing it to life.

The gang's not all here but it's a nice set up for what's to come.

The Bad

The reason we don't know about this past connection they all have might be a little convenient. But realistically, it is a good way to fit it into the characters' backstories.

Jim Hammond seemed a little out of character. I can't really remember the last time I saw him and he's gone through some stuff before. He seemed a little careless during his battle. He's seen quite a bit of action and knows the dangers his powers can cause to his surroundings. But perhaps he was caught off guard with what happened right before the fight started.

The Verdict

The Invaders are back and only James Robinson could have pulled it off. With Steve Pugh on art and Guru-eFX on colors, it's a good beginning for the new series. Robinson sets up the scenario for the characters to get back together. The threat bringing them together is not what you'd expect and that's what adds an interesting twist. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this series to see what happens next.

Glad to hear it was good. I read James' interview on another site (maybe CBR) this morning and it seemed like he's got good plans for where to take this series.

Yes, a team book NOT related to the Avengers or X-Men, we need more of those.

VERY iffy on this title still. Seems like it could have some promise, I dunno. Was anyone else bothered by the panel where Human Torch is carrying a guy while partially on fire and it practically looks like he split his torso in half? It's hard to describe without seeing it but man it looked awful.

Really enjoyed the first issue. I haven't had much exposure to the Invaders so this was a good way to see the team. I can see a lot of potential in this series especially with Jim Hammond.

Same here - haven't had much familiarity with the Invaders before but this was a great introductory issue!

Amazing first issue. This is the kind of stuff I want to see in a #1 - heart, drama, action, hints as to the future and a cool "to be continued." Robinson and Pugh are killing it. I was intrigued but tentative before I read it, now I m sold. Literally cannot wait until issue #2!!!

@g_man: I'm really starting to love this series too and I feel that James Robinson is giving the same sort of feel that Earth 2 which I love. He really makes Hammond feel humanized. The art from Pugh is great as well especially with flames. I honestly can't wait until the next issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't the world still believe Bucky's dead? I know he's been working for S.H.I.E.L.D., but he's suppose to be keeping a low profile due to him being an international fugitive. So isn't him appearing in a random U.S. town, alive and well, kinda reckless?

I'm so excited to see where this will go from here. I definitely appreciate he didn't just ignore what happened in secret avengers. With James on this I'm totally on board. I'm a bit iffy on the art but that's not to say it was terrible. Just looked a bit rushed in certain panels. This book is going to be great, of that I'm sure.

I would read this only to have a Namor book. He is sooo misused in New Avengers. I think I'll wait for the trade.

Wasn't as keen on Jim Hammond being the focus, but James Robinson won me over. And the art was lovely! Fun read with the right mix of action and introspection, plus loved the flashback!

Agreed, but I can't wait for trade. Love the Invaders also, and this first issue was good!

I like The Invaders, just as much as I like the Justice Society of America. I still see them as Golden-Age teams that belong in a WWII era. The challenge is to re-imagine them as heroes. I've seen how dedicated James Robinson is to the Golden Age. I wonder what he'll do with this team. I think it's pretty ironic that he moved from Earth-2 and re-imagining the JSA to re-imagining The Invaders.

I know that he is incredibly over-exposed, but I'd kinda like to see Logan with Hammond, Rogers and Namor in action against the Axis. Wolverine and The Invaders - Ha! ;)

I'd rather they bring in other Golden Age character, rather than bring Logan in. Plus, Logan and Cap have issues a lot of the time. Also, he would probably not get along with Namor... Hmm, that would lead to good character development though...

I love Pugh's art and I enjoyed the issue quite a bit. Glad to see a writer with respect for history like Robinson on the title.

Hope the Blazing Skull shows up soon.

Okay so tell me... Where is the female character character? I mean, it's all men which bores me. Where's Miss Liberty or Spitfire?

@jake_fury: Pretty sure his dead, but when has that stopped anyone?

@blackkitty: Who says that they WONT come?

And if not, they will probably enjoy their stay in Comic-Book Limbo.
