Age of Ultron #2 - Book Two

4

The action shifts as we see more of the horrific results from Ultron's attack and gain a little insight into the moment it all started.

The Good

Last issue we witnessed the sudden start of the Age of Ultron. Without seeing how it all started, we were just thrown into the middle of the action. This gave the story a sense of mystery that also kicked up the fun factor a bit. As the second issue is released just a week later, we get to see more of what is now the Marvel Universe.

As seen on the cover, Black Widow and Moon Knight appear. Last issue we just got a small glimpse of some of the survivors. It's great seeing there could be others out there as well. The scenes Brian Bendis sets up conveys the sucky nature of the after effects of Ultron's attack. We're still not getting all the answers but we are seeing more.

Bryan Hitch does a great job drawing heaps of rubble. This is the Marvel Universe in utter despair. Seeing the effects of the attack on certain characters will be a little shocking. It's great seeing what Bendis has for him to draw. The characters and locations makes the excitement level increase.

As we find out more about what triggered the change in what we knew of the Marvel Universe, the hooks dig in deeper making you want to know more.

The Bad

There are bouts of action in this issue but it's still a little more of trying to figure out what happened. This was a concern for some last issue and it is understandable that we would want to see more action. Clearly this is setting up some big action for next issue (but the Black Widow and Moon Knight scene was great!).

What's up with Spider-Man?

I was under the impression that this was the SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN version as we've seen a preview for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #6AU and the cover shows the new costume. Yet in a flashback scene here, it's clearly the old costume, hence regular Spider-Man. The Spider-Man here does feel more like Peter. Just a little confusing.

The Verdict

We may be on event-overload but I'm getting more and more excited for this one. We still don't have all the answer as to how it all started but we are getting some more details. Seeing other characters like Black Widow and Moon Knight was great. We are getting more set up. It's looking like next issue will definitely contain more action. Bryan Hitch's are great as he captures the mood of this world and seeing his character designs here makes the story more compelling. I almost feel like a kid getting this excited over a comic book event. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Age of Ultron feels like the TV show Lost to me, I don't understand whats going on but it just sucks me into a point where I have to just tune in to the next episode :P

But honestly I don't think its bad so far. The only problem I have with it is that I am confused at the time placement of this event. I just can't shake the feeling its set in a alternate universe, or at least an alternate version of the 616 but with Ultron taking over the planet.

This is just bad. Nothing happened. Who cares if it's taking place "today" in the Marvel Universe. House of M took place in the "main" marvel universe. Obviously everything will be set right at the end.

They seem to like to say it's Superior Spider-Man, but since some of the issues were written a while ago it is apparent that he was written as Peter not Ock at this point. We may see a sudden change of personality down the road, who knows.

Bendis likes writing Peter Parker, so he will simply pretend Superior never happened! In the tie-in SSM issues though, Slott will write him as Doc Ock. I think it's it.

It honestly feels like this issue could be merged with issue one and it would make a far more complete and satisfying first issue.

Still a whole lot of nothing going on in this series. The art is still gorgeous, but if we don't get any answers by the next issue, I'm done with it. Marvel's events are continuing to be a disappointment.

And agreed on the Spider-Man thing. "Today" is undoubtedly the future, but if this is Peter, I wanna know just how long it'll be till then.

Oh, and I'm almost positive that this isn't the Superior Spider-Man. In Fury's hideout, there was that whole bulletin board thing. Both Spider-Man and Octavius were on it, so either Fury's an idiot (and he's not) or between now and when this issue takes place, Peter makes a comeback.

I seem to be in the minority but I don't mind Age of Ultron starting after the invasion. I don't need to know every single thing about every single thing. As G-man stated it adds a bit of fun. "meta-reading" is a thing just like meta-gaming. Chill and enjoy the ride.uw

@Gambit1024: yeah but that board was from the Skrull invasion not Ultron's invasion... otherwise why would characters that are dead like the Sentry show up? And Black Widow stated it was from the Skrull invasion.

this issue was a repeat of the last issue. It looked great, but it was way to short also. Get onto it.

What the HELL is wrong with Cap (left arm specifically) in the final page? Art is not impressing me. First issue got me excited, this one drug its feet. Should've been one longer issue to start the event and shorten the series. Also annoying that it feels SO out of continuity of Marvel NOW but BMB claims otherwise. Superior is wrong, Beast is wrong, Cap's costume is wrong (though I wish it never changed), Tony is wrong, Storm is wrong.... I understand its been in the works for awhile but it feels sloppy.

I've just read it...my god, what's wrong with you humanity? That was boring! And who's that guy? Pete? Otto? An Ultron Spy? Pfff...I want Age of Ultron to succeed! I always loved Ultron's concept, but come on! Work it a little bit!

, These issues were written and drawn along time ago before they came up with the idea to change his suit (as in this is suppose to be peter, the way he was written in issue 1 "sounded" like peter not ock), so I guess they just left it like this since the seire was allready done.

Didnt read this issue yet might get it tomorrow.

I like the story but I'm a little put off by the fact that it is Peter Parker as Spider-Man. I'll reserve judgement until the entire story is told though.

Eh.  It was OK but I was a little let down, mostly by the Moon Knight part, where he just didn't do anything.  Since Moon Knight has so few appearances in comics, I'd like the ones he does have to be a little more interesting.

The part where he says the ones he trusted were in blue and the ones he didn't were in red--were these colors actually in the pictures somehow?  Some of the pictures' backgrounds were colored that way, but only some.  I couldn't figure out what he was talking about.

You're right, I appologize.

But this is another problem I have with the book: the story has been too uninteresting to pay attention to, so I put all my focus on the pretty pictures instead.

This series is off to a terrible start. It's clearly not Otto speaking as Spider-Man, and there was waaaaaaay too much exposition. Did anything even happen in this issue? All I remember is Natasha doing some walking... then some talking... then Peter doing some talking also. How exciting! In typical Bendis fashion (though I'm loving his X-Men), I think this issue could have been merged with #1 for pacing sake.

The only redeeming feature of this issue was that Moon Knight wasn't pretending to be Cap, Wolverine, or Spidey.

These 2 Issues feel very cinematic to me, more like the opening to a movie then a comic book, But I like it, could the first 2 issues be moved to 1 .. sure, but they came out in back to back weeks so I don't feel like the pacing is off at all, but hey that's just me.

It was pretty boring.

Also, the character change in Spider-Man is pretty confusing.

Has anyone considered that it is possible that it might NOT be Spider-Man at all? Maybe a life-model Ultron to infiltrate the Avengers, or what's left of them, and eliminate them? I mean, Ultron would not know anything about Doc Ock being inside Peter's body.

There are Superior issues tied in to this event, and I do not think Bendis is the kind of writer to pretend Superior never existed.

Just a theory.

The story was delayed by a year, the reason Superior seems so out of character is because he was originally written to be regular Peter.

This is such a sloppy event it isn't even funny. The fact they pushed it back two years really shows, and it's really sad they didn't update Spider-mans art to show the Superior suit. It's even sadder that they didn't seem to change the dialog for Peter to make it sound like Doc Ock. It's kind of funny that they left in Emma Frost's telepathy though xD

What a disappointment this is so far.

I had a couple of thoughts that are both kinda spoilery, so I will hide them.

On the last page, all I could think was...

"Why hasn't anyone fixed Cap's very broken arm? Couldn't Dr. Strange take care of that with a snap of his fingers? The man is both a surgeon and a sorcerer!"

And as far as Spider-Man is concerned...

This is definitely feeling more like Peter than Otto. If that's supposed to be Superior Spider-Man, then Bendis is not nailing his voice at all.

Like Tony, I think they should make it clear very soon as to which Spider-Man this is. Maybe Bendis doesn't want to let on as to when this is taking place just yet, but because there is this much emphasis on Spidey, I think the story would read better if we knew who he was. Nice review!

OK everyone here is what happpened with Spider-Man. When this series was written back in 2010-2011, Peter Parker was Spider-Man. Back when this series was drawn in 2011-2012, Peter Parker was Spider-Man. By the time this series was released in 2013, Otto Octavius is Superior Spider-Man. Because no one was even considering a major change in who was Spider-Man the character written and drawn is Peter Parker. But because of when the series has been released the character has been retconed to be Otto Octavius. Thats why the personality of Spider-Man in Age of Ultron does not match the personality of Spider-Man in Superior Spider-Man.

(I think this may be the first time where a writer retconed his story before the story even came out.)

Bendis is knocking it out of the park with his X-Men books right now, but this is just awful in my opinion. It has failed to interest me whatsoever. Plus, I'm not a fan of Hitch's art at all.

I wish they would stop branding this as an event because it really doesn't read as such. Clearly this was meant to be set during Bendis' tenure on the book (hence the similar rosters such as Luke Cage and Peter) but has gotten so delayed it doesn't fit, and Marvel feel the only way to justify that their fans buy the book is if they market as a "the universe will never be the same!!!" type event.

I feel that type of thinking speaks negative of us readers; I for example bought the book as I really liked Bendis' run on the book, was really interested by the build up to this story and want to enjoy possibly the last Brian Hitch art of the Marvel Universe. If you're buying this only because it's branded as "important" I really think you need to reassess your comic reading...

Everyone is complaining about the continuity. I understand, considering how much has changed with Marvel NOW!, but I'm treating it as an in-yet-out-of-continuity story. Like Age of Apocalypse or House of M. I'm enjoying it a lot because I'm not letting those little things bug me.

I liked the part where they ignored how much Hawkeye said he respected Hank Pym very recently in secret avengers.
